My latest addition, and one of the most well looked-after cleaners I've seen! Highly polished, and very few scratches. Pity about the vile 60's bag, but flex is original.

Handle/handgrip is a bit of a mystery...

Was the bag made in the 60s an intentional replacement by Hoover? that colour grey is an odd choice for a 60s Hoover is it not?

Yeah, you see them on lots of vintage Hoovers. I guess they thought grey would be neutral enough not to clash with the colour schemes of the 400/700/800/900 machines, as well as the 160/262, which they also fit...given that the owners of pre-war and 1940's Hoovers still in use in the late-1960's might be of the 'older generation', and prefer not to have the loud, garish colours being used on the new machines of the age! Black would have looked a lot better, but maybe it costs more to dye fabric black or something...

Well, Hoover had -some- machines with grey bags didn't they, whilst there were no black ones..they'd have to buy in black dyes and all sorts I presume, even more overheads if they used that vinyl covered fabric that the late 60s/70s bags had.

You have done a wonderful job with your 725. The orange triangle came out nice too. Those "700" series machines worked very well and were so quiet and durable. You are very lucky to have such a fine example to have in your collection. Thanks for posting the photos. Here are some photos of mine. I too have the later replacement bag. Mine is a very late one with two speeds too!

There appears to be a crest on the top of both those machines.. is the UK one different than the US one?

Tom, your 725 looks great! The US replacement bags are so much more attractive than ours! Your motor cap is different too, of course - ours have the royal coat-of-arms, not the 'servant of the home' logo.

Mine is a 1-speed model, so it's not a late one, but it has the 1-piece motor cap, like the 750...I have an earlier machine in which the cap, orange band, and metal band are all separate pieces.

It also has the unpainted cord hooks, which I've only ever seen on the US models. The handle is round at the top, with a round bakelite end-plug, rather than an oval one. The hand-grip itself doesn't have the Hoover logo on it anywhere (it hasn't worn off!), and a totally different pattern to the usual kind...wierd!

Here's a pic which shows the Royal coat-of-arms on the UK machines. The US machines have the 'Servant of the Home' seal, as on the back of instruction manuals.

I do actually have an American motor cap in my possession, oddly found on a UK 700-motor given to me in a box of spares. I'd post a picture of that too, but it's in a box in the attic somewhere and I don't have time to dig it out - maybe one of the US guys wouldn't mind posting a pic of it?

Those are beautiful vacuums! I love the shine on your machine Jack. And, I love your flooring, as shown in the first pic of this thread. The next time I get to the UK it would be great to have a mini meet and get to know all of the UK members.

Did it not need any polishing up or anything? It looks well nice. At least the bag is genuine Hoover, and not some horrible 'The Vacuum Cleaner' type number...

The square O's on the bag indicate it was replaced some time after 1967, so the cleaner was nearly 40 years old when it was replaced! That's durability...

Pete - this cleaner is Canadian built, hence the 'Empire product' text on the badge. Apparently it was one common for American companies to build UK market goods in Canada, which as part of the British Empire incurred more favourable import tax terms.

Jack - as an aside, do you know which were the first Hoover models to be built at Perivale?

Hi there Si! I have given it a polish, but it looked pretty good before, too. It didn't need the extensive buffing that many of my cleaners have needed. Clearly it's been well cared-for in its time, not flung in a damp shed for 60 years!

The 750 was the first to be built in Perivale, presumably along with its cheaper sister model, the 425...earlier 750s (like yours, I believe!) were still 'Empire Products'. Later ones like my one are Perivale-made. I don't know at what point production switched, or which of the two are rarer!

Having mentioned the 425, looks like it gained or lost 30w of power during its production run (depending on which ratings plate is older!):

You are such a lucky so and so sometimes. I know I have just managed a couple of lucky finds in my time, one of which is now in your posession. A good home without any doubt.

You ought to post a picture of the handle dude, the thread is enthralling, but no pic of the said handle and grip which is such an anomaly.

Looking forward to getting down to see you once more.

I need to play with the early 912 beforeI get married and any chance is no longer viable. LOL.

I know, I'm a very lucky boy! Building up my collection now because it won't be long before I have a car, bills etc, and I may find I suddenly have a great deal less disposable income!

Would be great to see you again sometime; let me know when you'll be around. Looks like I'm gonna be quite busy from the next few weeks onwards, so sooner's better than later!
