Big Changes Ahead for Dyson Uprights

It's interesting what one can find when searching through published patent filings online: from finalized design sketches of the long rumored Lotus sport crossover vehicle, to what Dyson has planned for their upright vacuum cleaners in the not-too-distant future.

The first new design that I discovered is basically an implementation of the articulating handle joint from the most recent Big Ball canisters onto an upright. Judging from the drawings and text, the articulating handle joint on the upright will be a bit more complex in design, due to the fact that the joint will have to straighten for the wand to fully extend and retract through it. Overall, this will be a very intuitive solution for reducing the occurrences of tearing where the hose joins the cuff. If it feels exactly like the handle used with the Big Ball canister, then it will feel more ergonomic as well. Also, I hope this arrangement will see the return of aluminum wands on the uprights.

The second new design that I found is what appears to be a total reinvention of the cyclonic separation system. It looks like the uprights will soon adopt the new design as seen on the recently unveiled Dyson Cinetic Big Ball Animal Pro 2 canister: the low-efficiency cyclone and the separated large debris will no longer share the same space. The low efficiency cyclone will be in a rather smaller chamber with an outlet where large debris is flung out and accumulated in a separate partition of the clear bin. Another take away from the patent text and drawings is that Dyson is finally moving away from the frustratingly inept Radial Root Cyclone arrangement where the clean air is channeled through the bottom of the container, an area that ALWAYS collects static charged dust that can be sucked directly into the motor, should the bin not be wiped down before placing back on the machine.

The third new design implementation that I hope to see is that of a dual brush-bar design concept, similar to what Shark has featured on their Duo machines. I think Dyson will refine the design even further, and incorporate carbon fiber to the smaller front roller. In addition, it appears that Dyson wants to design the mechanism with the ability to enable and disable either brush bar independently through separate motor drives. This would differ from the Shark design since the dual brush set-up they use runs off of just one motor. There's also a mention of separate air turbines being used to power the brush bars, so there's definite intent to use this cleaner head design on their canisters as well....even though I really hope Dyson will just implement a power head for at least one of their canisters eventually.

I strongly feel that these new designs will be featured on the Dyson Cinetic Big Ball 2, since the current design is approaching three years old, and Dyson normally runs off a three year production cycle. Thoughts?

Hmm.

I think i've seen a similar dust bin design on a Hoover air canister it too had a sort of lower chamber for the larger particles.
