I just added a Kirby Legend II in beautiful condition to my collection. It runs quietly and smoothly but occasionally, especially when first turned on, the motor slows down for a few seconds, the headlight and the amber power light dim and flicker, and it smells like something is burning (not the belt). It might run fine for a minute or two then may do it again. It does the same thing when using the hose and running at the higher speed. It doesn't matter if the nozzle is set high or low. Has anybody experienced this or have any ideas on the cause? Thanks

Mike

Kirby Legend

Hi Mike That is a very good vacuum. I have Two Heritage2 Kirbys with care will last for ever. It sounds like the Carbon Brushes need to be replaced. Stop useing it the way it is you can dammage the motor. If you cant change the brushes have your local Kirby dealer do it. Not a very expensive repair . Take care Doug

Yes Brushes

Yeah this sounds like brushes are worn down, they are a easy repair you can do yourself, youtube is a good source for help.

Thanks Doug and Richard for your help! Replacing the brushes was what I was thinking (and hoping) too. I have ordered them and will pop them in next week.

The other area to look at is the power switch. It could be failing as well. We have had a few burn out on our kirby's. Check where the cord plugs into the machine and make sure it has not suffered any damage by over heating. If so time for a new power switch.
