Argos has now started to bring in the new Winter 2014/15 range, which always happens about a month before the new catalogue launch. They always add them to the website at a much higher price for a month, so that they can claim "half price" when it goes to print in the new catalogue. At present, 4 new lines have been added, which are essentially old machines with low wattage motors, and most of these claim to be A graded energy efficient, which, although Argos no longer have to give motor wattages, means that these will all have approximately 700W or less motors. Will be interesting to see how poor the resulting suction will be, seeing as these are all old designs that previously had much higher wattage motor in them. Notice how they display the grades for pickup, energy and dust emissions in the specs. But do not give the power of the machine - which as I said, they don't have to do now. Bit of a con really, as the item has to display its power input, but retailers don't have to advertise it - this is the new law.

Keep watching Argos over the next few weeks as more machines will be added, usually at higher prices than they will normally be. This is only done to satisfy trading standards that they are genuinely "half price" or "£75 OFF".

Go into Vacuum Cleaners, and in the Filters on the left of the page, select those with Energy Rating A - at present there are only 4, but this will rise as they come online. The website is VERY temperamental and seems to work best on Firefox, as IE11 doesn't always show the new machines unless you use the filters, and sometimes Firefox and IE doesn't even show the Energy rating filter, until you go onto the second page of results, ordered on price. If it displays 160 machines found, then it wont show the new machines. If it shows 164 machines found, then you will see the new machines. I cannot understand why the site is always so dodgy.

I put up a link to them in the OP but it stopped working, so have to do them individually, Argos website is useless TBH

These links may be altered as Argos is changing the website links all the while, but from what I can see, they all seem nothing new, but claim to be Energy rated "A" and this has to be the lowest power consumption, as it goes from A to G, where the G rated will be the 1600W machines. Now the Enigma used to be a 2400W machine, but to go to a grade A rated on energy, it will have to be the same sort of input power as the new ECO Henrys due to launch like John and Lewis, so it must be anywhere between 500W and 700W to get an A rating - unless they are lying about the figures - which would be very naughty indeed!

Notice the Vax Air canister, a very old design, gets a Grade A on energy, but a poor grade D on carpet pickup, with only a C on hard floors - this is not very good is it?

I see there are loads of machines with 1600+ wattages are being sold off for 'half price' & they have been for ages.

They need to get shot of most of the high power machines now, in order to bring in the new powerless and gutless EU approved models. I would get as many as you can of the high wattage machines now, as If they all ar gonna be going for grade A on energy after Sept, they are all gonna be sub 800W motors, and many will just not cut the mustard - at least not the old designed machines like the Vax Air and the Hoover Enigma canisters.

Wouldn't it be best to reserve judgment until we can actually use these cleaners instead of slagging them off as "powerless and gutless"?

These are all straight suction cylinders, so they're never going to be awarded high marks for carpet pickup. That award will always go to uprights, by default.

Having used the new 580w John Lewis Numatic, the performance on them is exceptional - certainly if the suction power is any less than the 1200w models, it isn't noticeable.

There is always going to be good and bad vacuums. Personally, I wouldn't want to own any of these cleaners. There's absolutely no need to start frenzy-panic-buying high wattage cleaners. They'll be in abundance on ebay and clearance sites anyway soon and without having used any of the new low wattage machines, it's a riduclously pointless waste of time and money.

As vacuum cleaners of the past have proven, you don't need a gazillion motor watts to clean a carpet. Remember, the Hoover Purepower started out as 1200w and was more than enough. Miele have been 1200w in the US for years and still pack a punch. Hoover Turbopower 2's and Lux Contours both had great suction rated at 800w and the Panasonic 40 series never had any problems with pickup at 650w.

Not at present - they wont have any of the new ranges actually in stock until the middle of July. They might say they are in stock but do a search by store and they will all be out of stock. They start getting delivered to stores after the new catalogue launches this time next month, and they will usually be lower prices as well. As the next few weeks progresses, Argos should be putting more on their website that will be part of the new catalogue range.

whatever I say you will disagree with

There isn't anything to disagree with. You haven't actually made a point. You're branding modern, low wattage cleaners as "powerless and gutless" without actually having used any of them. You're making a massive assumption with no credible information to back it up and encouraging people to start unnecessarily panic buying high wattage cleaners for no good reason.

I think you're letting your obvious anti-EU views cloud your judgement over a piece of legislation that has masses of potential to work in our favour and make the modern market considerably more interesting.

I've just blocked you instead so I don't have to rea

once again proving that Steve doesn't give a flying fig about anybody's views other than his own.

This board was a nicer place without you in it.

Blocking someone and telling them?

Lovely Troll behaviour there.

Luckily Chris wont take it to heart and it only confirms what we know about you.

Block me - if you have not already but given your slagging off cleaners you aint even used just goes to show your mentality - god help the kids here that seem to idolise you. what a foolish mistake they make.

Chris - your spot on with your point about the legislation making things better and hopefully making a better market for everyone.
