Looking for a canister for around $400

I use my Kirbys for where I have carpeting, but I have quite a bit of laminate in the house, so I'd like to have a canister on hand for that, and for when I don't want to hassle with getting the Kirby attachments out of the closet. Also, we have a German Shepherd that we allow on the couch, so there's quite a bit of hair to clean up there, too.

I really like the looks of the Miele C1 Cat & Dog. Amazon has it listed for $649, which is a little more than I want to spend. Of course, it has an electric power head, which I might not need. I do have an area rug in the living room, but a turbo head might be able to clean that adequately. I might be able to save some $ if I go with a straight-suction Miele.

I've also seen quite a few Aerus Lux canisters on eBay in decent shape, for anywhere between $300-400. The SideKick tool looks like it would really be handy for cleaning the couch.

You might also call the Tacony outlet store in ST. James Missouri, you could get the Ricccar Prima or Simplicity Wonder at a great price, those are great machines.

I would personally go with any of the Aerus Electrolux canisters. I love the sidekick attachments for cleaning up pet hair on couches, rugs, chairs, etc. Aerus makes quality machines that have great suction and are generally long lasting, provided you take care of them.

Leaning towards Miele

I think I've pretty much narrowed it down to one of the Miele offerings:

I have to figure out whether I need a power head or not. Like I said previously, I have my Kirbys for the carpeted rooms, and likely the only rug I'd use the canister on would be the area rug in the living room. If the turbo head does a good enough job getting the dog hair off of that, I'll go with the straight suction model.

whether to use an electric power head

I always suggest using an electric power nozzle if you need a spinning brush. Turbine brushes are prone to cloging and they use the suction power of the vacuum to spin the turbine which removes cleaning power from the air stream. I would go with the electric nozzle if you can.

I agree with bags, mortorized power nozzle, and Aerus Electrolux. These canister vacuums are super versatile, durable, and powerful. Bags are way less than other brands and are easy to remove and insert.

Wow, so there's pretty strong support for Electrolux/Aerus! I really do like the looks of the Diamond Jubilee that Mike linked to in the second post. And I like the fact that the bags cost way less than the ones for the Miele do. Ideally, I'd like to find one with a Side Kick, and a correct double-sided floor tool.

Nathan....if you can set me up with something like that, I'd be interested.

In the event he doesn’t have a sidekick or double sided floor tool, he’s still offered a nice deal. The sidekick and double side tool can be found on evacuumstore for new or I’m sure ebay has used ones.

I also agree, Mieles are good machines but if you can get an Electrolux machine in good condition at the price Nathan is offering, I would do so. They are great machines and should last a long time.

Firstly I must say here that your Electrolux canister vacs were maybe definitely a fantastic brand to whom you appear a big fan of this. Frankly speaking, I have no idea about this but the one I use Shark Navigator Lift-Away is also a good one and many people like me in homes. It’s longer-lasting than anything else at the price and is relatively lightweight. This can be also a good option for you if you think. Also, I advise you to check the link I shared and read about the latest best picks for your budget!
