A friend's parents had a big 1964 Chrysler New Yorker wagon when we were in high school. We had a big US Navy life raft that could hold something like 20 people that we fabricated a mount for an outboard motor and glued it with the right kind of marine glue to the back. We'd roll that thing up, stuff it in the back of that big Chrysler wagon with its rectangular steering wheel ( remember those ? ), push button automatic transmission too, drive up to Channel Islands Harbor near Port Hueneme, inflate it at the gas station at the marina, launch it, mount up our little outboard with our gas can and go boating with it. It had inflatable hoops and you could flop covers over top to keep the elements off the survivors. We would even take it outside the breakwater a bit because a half mile or less down the coast was the entrance to the Navy base where there were often heavily damaged, just mangled, decommissioned warships that had been used as targets for missile tests. Fun times made possible by a big Chrysler land yacht.

As were so many other cars from the 50's, including the 53 Ford Customline that brought me home from the hospital when I was born, the 52 Buick Roadmaster my parents bought when I was about 6 months old, my great-uncle's 53 Oldsmobile Super 88, Grandpa's 58 Plymouth Belvedere, our neighbor's 56 Ford Fairlane, one uncle's 53 Chevy Bel Air, another uncle's 57 or 58 Chrysler, and the 59 olds my parents bought when I was about 7 or 8 years old. Some beautiful cars back then, and you knew what it was a mile down the road, instead of them looking mostly the same as they do today!

I miss when everybody's stuff was vastly different

CheeseWonton, nice story. I might have to try find an outboard motor now.
Whenever I think about that old New Yorker wagon I hear the B-52s playing in my head :

"I got me a Chrysler that's as big as a whale
And it's about to set sail
I got me a Chrysler that seats about 20
So come along and bring your juke box money"

"--got me a Chrysler that's as big as a whale --" Now that we're talking about cars (and really don't want to use the word you should not say on a plane when greeting a friend --Hi Jack)I will mention some Chrysler fans --Angela Landsberry - Liked fine cars & had a early 60s Chrysler Town & Country to make the drive from LA to Tahoe. After 'Murder She Wrote she drove Volvo.Janis Joplin -After she was famous flew to a high school reunion and rented a big Chrysler to drive to home town.John Lennon - Drove a green T&C wagon across country from New York. Called it the Green Lizard.About a 70, may be in museum now.( T&C wagons could have front & rear AC)
