Great vacuums! I love Electrolux and Kirby! I have a DS50 and am hoping to finalize a deal on here for a teal/aqua model G! I wouldn't mind an automatic E finding its way into my house! Ha ha! -Michelle

Tom,

Great vacuum cleaners! I have a tan Model G, too.

Btw, is the hose cord tan or ivory? I've only seen ivory and teal ones.

Paul,

the hose cord is ivory to match the hose. I too have only seen teal and ivory... I have a few of each, but this is the only hose that doesn't leak like a sieve to use them with,  new rubber hoses are slightly too large in diameter for the straps.

Michelle,

I need, yeah like a hole in my head, a few more metal bodied models to have a representative of each one...but I want one in every color :-) It's become an obsession. I may start wanting one from every year... better start building a second story on the house for a display room....

Today as I was out and about I stopped by an out of the way thrift shop behind the Senior Center in a neighboring town and picked up a Lux Golden J for $1.99. Tag said didn't run, missing parts. Took it home took it apart to clean it up and see what it needed, and found that the only thing wrong with it was someone had worked on it and not connected one of the leads from the motor to the wiring block. Put it back together and it purrs like new. I love it when it's easy to fix.

Thanks for the info, Tom. I figured it was ivory, but just wanted to be sure I wasn't missing something.

Regarding the wider diameter of the newer hoses, have you thought about using cable ties? I actually saw a Model L in a thrift store not too long ago that had that done, and while it wasn't original; it did the job and looked well. The owner had trimmed off the excess, so it was very neat in appearance.

I have a rubber hose and plan on doing that when I get a cord.

Paul,

I hadn't thought of wire ties... and I have hundreds of them around. Thanks for the idea. I think I even have a cord with damaged straps that I could use and not feel that I'd diminished it some how.  I may just have to try it out over the weekend. Might even use velcro ties... easy on and off. Now my brain is running at full speed. Good thing everything local is closed or I'd be likely to start tonight

Tom,

Great idea about the velcro ties--versatile's always better than fixed.

Missed your reply about the Golden J--wow and congrats! That generation--as a rule--hardly ever threw things away even if they didn't work--either they could find another use for them such as for parts or they could find someone like you who knew how to repair them. Good job. Post a photo of it sometime, and/or a Youtube vid.

I love that Kirby, that is the next Kirby I am after.

My favorite machines are not the ones I got mint but rather the ones that looked like they could never be saved.

Like this convertible Even if the green was not the right green.

Very groovy in a Brady Bunch kind of way, Tom--thanks!

Do you have all the attachments--including the white hose with trios of teal/gold/teal tracers? If not Jimmy Martin (rugsucker) may have them--I know he had one or two of the hoses a couple weeks ago.

Also, have you thought about collecting sets of Electrolux machines like me? This is what I consider a set:

(1961-1988: aqua Model G era to Model 1521/Marquise era)--not sure if Model G was launched in October 1960 or April 1961. The 50th anniversary plate states 1961, but I have also seen 1960 in other places).

1. standard cleaner (e. g. Model 1205 J/Golden J w/PN-2 w/50th Jubilee decal and ivory attachments)
2. budget cleaner (e. g. gold Model L w/PN-2 and ivory attachments)
3. turbo rug washer/floor polisher (gold and ivory) (1962 and on)
4. Model B-7 (aqua w/late Model Rs, early aqua Model Gs, and early ivory Model Ls)
5. Model B-8 Carpet Beautifier/Buffer (e. g. gold)--mid-Model Gs to mid-Model 1505/Silverados or Models B-9, B-10, & 1522 (late Model 1505/Silverados and on)
6. Model CA commercial cleaner (early and mid Model Gs, early and mid Model Ls)
7. Model CB commercial cleaner (e. g. gold top) --late Model Gs to mid Model 1505/Silverados--These are more rare and quite expensive when they are found, so I'm not planning on collecting them. (CB2000 - 1983-1988)
8. upright cleaner--Model 1363 (yellow-gold) late Model 1401/Super Js; Model 1363 (tan)--Model 1401/Olympia One; Model 1451s (tan) Models 1401-B, 1505/Olympia Ones; Model 1451s (gray)--Model 1505/Silverados; Model 1451 Es (sand) early and mid Model 1521/Diamond Js; Models 1500, 1500 C, 1572 E/Discovery IIs (late Model 1521/Diamond Js to Model 1521/Marquises)
9. Vaporizer and Sprayer (through 1205 or 1205 J?)

And, in the gold-colored era, since there were two standard gold-colored cleaners, I'd include the 1401/Super J.

I'd also include the Model GHs (hospital versions) with the Model Gs, but they too are quite rare.

* * * * * * * * *

(1952-1961: Model LX era to Model R* era)

1. Vaporizer & Sprayer
2. Garment bag (Model LX and Model LXI through model Model AE or F?)
3. Model B-6 Floor Scrubber/Polisher (Models LX, LXI, E, AE, T)--not sure exactly when these were first manufactured
4. Model B-7 Floor Scrubber/Polisher (gray-w/Model F and early Model R)
5. Polisher & Scrubber (hammertone blue through Model E)
6. Turb-O-Tool w/Rug Washer (beginning Model AE--changed from hammertone blue to ivory w/Model F)

*Model Rs actually straddled two eras as they were the budget model with the late Model Fs and early Model Gs. So, the early ones had the gray and ivory attachments, and the later ones had the teal and ivory attachments (interestingly, the hose tracer colors never changed; they were always gray and teal. Some have thought that was a hint that the Model G was on its way, but the Model F's hoses also had gray and teal tracers albeit in a different pattern, so that rationale is unlikely). They were discontinued in 1963 and were replaced with the Model Ls.

Come to think of it, I'm also wondering if you have the complete set of attachments for your Kirby DS-50? I am not as familiar with Kirbys, but I don't think they made budget models that matched their standard models; and their shampooers/polishers were/are attached to the cleaners)

I love finding things that look hopeless and making them useful again. Now I just need to learn to let some of them go to new homes instead of keeping them all.

I have a sick feeling that I'm going to end up collecting every Electrolux canister model! Ha ha! I have 2 1205's; the one my husband bought me because that's what my mom had/I grew up with and the other one is my mom's, she just passed away in September. My husband and I are going to restore my mom's; it's in really bad shape, but thank goodness my husband restores antique cars for a living and knows how to fix stuff! Also, he's an expert metal fabricator so that works out great for me! Besides the 2 1205's, I have a model XXX and a model LX. I'm in the process of finishing up 2 deals on here for a model G and an Olympia One. For now, I just want the canisters because that's all I have the room for! Once we get our house more in order I'll probably start collecting the attachments. -Michelle

I know that feeling... I have 2 XXX's, an LX, Automatic E, Tan G, Golden J, both Olympia models, a Silverado, Marquise and UltraLux metal canisters, a Hi-Tech 2100 and the first Aerus Legacy plastic canisters, an Epic 2500 and Lux Guardian uprights... plus  a Kirby D50 and Sentria II, a Hoover constellation and Windtunnel Platinum canister and 2 Dysons.... the only one bought new is my Dyson DC07, the rest are all thrifted or curbside finds ( I love trash day). And unlike you, I have most of the attachments and hoses too. I even keep leaky hoses in rough shape that I really should just let go.

Tom

Let's see, besides my 4 Lux canisters I have 2 Kirbys: a DS50 and Heritage II, a Hoover Convertible, a Sears Kenmore Twin Fans, 2 Dirt Devil hand vacs, a Hoover brush vac, a 1940's Westinghouse hand vac, and a newer Dirt Devil upright that I'm not happy with. The 2 Kirbys I got on Ebay for local pick up. I'm in the process of buying all of the Kirby parts that I need to get them both up and running. The Hoover Convertible I listed on here in a thread and from what people have told me is that the motor head part are from the 80's (It's a darker blue and white) and the bag on it is from the 70's (it's a medium blue holey fabric with a cute little design on it). I got "Hoovie" from my husband's boss. He knew I collected vacuums and said I could have it! I just got my Twin Fans at a garage sale maybe a month ago for $1.00! All it's missing is the front light lens and it works flawlessly! I don't know anything about Twin Fans, it's white and brown with a brown/white flower bag. I got one of my hand held Dirt Devils from my husband, he bought it new in 1990 I think he said. He cleaned him up for me and now I can use it! I got the other Dirt Devil from a garage sale for $15.00! It's in good shape! It's newer than my husband's. His just has the red cloth bag and mine has a disposable bag inside of the outer red bag. I just have to find out what kind of disposable bags I have to get for him. I got my Hoover Brush Vac from a garage sale for $2.00! I actually got him the same time I got my Dirt Devil hand vac, I was garage saleing that day! Believe it or not, my little "Hoove" is one of my favorite vacuums! I use him everyday for vacuuming off the bed and furniture. He's pretty neat and I love the fact that he looks like my old school Nintendo! Ha Ha! My husband bought me my 1940's Westinghouse hand vac off of Etsy. He was the cutest little thing I have ever seen and I had to have it! My husband and I cleaned him up, just have to gently clean his cloth bag. Also, I got an Electrolux Beautifier B-8 Shampooer at a garage sale for $5.00 and it comes with every attachment including a floor buffer for a model XXX! I put it on my 1205 and tried it out, it's the coolest little gadget ever! For attachments, I only have a complete set for my 1205 that my husband bought for me. I do have 3 braided hoses from my 1205, XXX, and LX. I don't think the 2 have good suction, I know my 1205 doesn't, that's why I bought her a new vinyl hose. I do have some wands and floor tools for the XXX and LX, but not a complete set for either. I'll be getting more vacuums and attachments regardless of space because I know myself! Ha Ha! -Michelle

Always have to have a backup of a backup of a backup! Ha ha! Vacuums are my newest and latest hobby. I own the least and know the least about them. That's why I love this site and the people who talk to me and educate me so I can pursue this hobby even more! My number 1 hobby is collecting chainsaws. Between my husband and I we have just passed the 130 mark, but 80+ of those are mine! You can never have enough chainsaws! What if your one saw doesn't work? Then you need like 40 more as backups! Ha Ha! I'm obsessed! Same goes for collecting Sunbeam Mixmasters and clock radios! I have 14 stand mixers, I believe 12 electric hand mixers, over 20 clock radios. I have 5 clock radios in our bedroom that I switch off on. They all get a turn to wake me up in the morning! Gotta love tube technology!!! Now I know I have over 20 chainsaws in my house. The only rooms that don't have a chainsaw are the bathroom and kitchen, but that can change! Same with all the other stuff I collect, they can coincide together quite nicely! Ha Ha! My husband is awesome! Not only has he taught me how to fix and rebuild everything I collect, but he's the one that has mostly bought me all of the stuff I collect! I've learned how to work on circuit boards, tube and solid state/transistor radios, rebuild carburetors on the chainsaws, paint, fix metal, rebuild the mixers' motors, and etc. I've learned a lot and will always learn new and great things thanks to having someone to share it all with! I know what you mean when it comes to having a great spouse! We are lucky! -Michelle

Too many Vacuums !

Luxy and Gsheen... You say one can never have to many Vacuums... Well try living in a small two bedroom house and having 425 vacuums there.I think it is time to clean out all the doubles and triple vacuums. I can honestly say those little suckers are every where.LOL There are even 5 machines in the bathroom....Will it ever end?? I hope so.. Dan

i think we have all been their at some stage. I leased a apartment on the beachfront years ago. It was a high end apartment and because it was so close to the sea the garage was humidity controlled to decrease the chance that your car would rust. ( Most of the apartments belonged to people from upcountry who only used them for the Holidays and rented the apartments out for the rest of the time, so the cars would stand for months on end. My beautiful vacuum collection was upstairs with me, In the garage were the ones waiting for restoration in that nice climate controlled environment. My brand new jag stood outside and after a year had a small rust bubble on it. I had over 350 vacuums at that stage.

I also collect vintage low brass instruments I have 4 tubas 3 baritones 2 sousaphones 1 helicon, 1 trumpet,1 frumpet, and 1 mellophone. Also I am starting to collect vintage bmx bicycles of the 1970's, also I have 2 control line airplanes. Yes I have a collector fever.

Hi! Those are interesting hobbies you got there! I forgot to mention that I also collect vintage circular saws and vintage push mowers! I only have 2 push mowers now, got rid of like 3 or 4. I kept the one my husband and I restored that I named "Barnaby" and one we garbage picked that's a 1970's Snapper mulcher mower with original bag named "snappy". We have way too many hobbies and stuff going on right now! I'm currently restoring a Homelite 150 chainsaw named "Bertie", a 1937 Sunbeam Mixmaster model 3B stand mixer named "Bernadine", a 1972 Pioneer Holiday II model 1072 chainsaw named "Pie", and other stuff! Just a wee bit overwhelmed right now! Ha ha! What kind of electric chainsaws do you have? -Michelle
