I am after a DC17 as I would like a deep cleaning Dyson for my 1 inch thick (approx) carpet in my bedroom and for the new carpets we will be getting throughout the house.

So, What's the best way I can get a DC17 in the UK? Lowest price?

Many thanks
PS I would like to see brushbar pics

Don't do it!

The DC-17 has extremely sharp and stiff bristles they are actually painful to the touch. I actually sold my off to a pawn shop a few weeks ago i stopped using it because i felt it would cause damage to the carpeting.

when I imported my dc28 it was quite expensive but as the dc17s are going cheap on ebay the only real cost you will have to factor in would be the import tax, what I always do is look at the cost of shipping and add £100 to it this will probably be lower than that but its always good to expect the worse. My dc17 still needs repairing I hope to fix it up.

Stan I would like a powerful vacuum with the design of a Dyson because Dyson is my favourite bagless vacuum. I want a bagless machine that does a good job and has nice features

Devin
I have been using a Dyson DC07 Origin on this carpet (3 rows of bristles and 290 AW) and I still need to go over the carpet a few times to pick all the durface dirt up. The carpet has dust inside it, I know it. I am currently using a DC04 with super glued brstles on it and that's still not aggressive enough but does a good job picking dust up.

Michael: Nice :D Hope your DC17 goes well, Thank you so so so much for sharing the link, I would like a DC28 but am worried about techy probs I might have in an exensive vac, and Am not sure if the brushbar is as still as the DC17? Thanks

BTW we have very thin pile carpets downstairs which are approx 1 cm and nothing lifts the pile up, even a brand new Dc25 out of the box couldn't lift the pile.

We have a busy household and my cousins who come over like to make mess all the time so we vacuum a lot but the carpet gets worn down. Looks like I need more than a beater bar

you want a bagless machine.....

That does a good job, and you're picking a WHAT?

If you must have a 'bagless' machine, do yourself right and import a Fantom or Amway, those are the only two bagless cleaner I could ever recommend. All that Dyson will do to that thick carpeting is tear out fibers, that's all my Dyson ever do (I'm surprised I own two of them, maybe 2 1/2).

What makes you think a Dyson is going to lift carpeting? There would never be enough sealed suction on such a cleaner to constitute carpet lifting.

Don't forget that if you do import a cleaner from the US, you will also need a converter to be able to use it as the voltage is different.

Why don't you just buy a vacuum in the UK that deep cleans better than a Dyson instead of importing one? It'll be a lot cheaper. If your Dyson is leaving surface dust behind (and we all know they leave a lot of embedded dust and dirt behind), then why not opt for a different brand? A Miele S7, Sebo upright, a recon Kirby or even something like a Vax Mach upright as they all have much better brushroll's than the Dyson and would subsequently pick up more from a deep carpet (despite the Vax's cyclone not being quite as efficient).

I have a Dyson DC04. If that can lift carpets OK (Dual cyclone) then imagine a root cyclone! the DC07 was almost impossible tpo move, especially my Dc04 Absolute+ which we had in 2008.

I just want a DC17 cos that's a Dyson and Dyson has nice designs which are suitable for our home. I dont want a fragile brittle vacuum, we have a 5 bedroom 3 story house and it had loads of mixed flooring with different carpet thicknesses.

An affordable machine...

That would do a much better job cleaning that thick carpet in the bedroom would be a reconditioned Kirby which should be available in the UK.

What's more important to you, Looks or performance? It sounds like you would rather have a vacuum cleaner that looks cool and pretty and made out of cheap colorful plastic than a good "Direct Air" cleaner that can get your thick bedroom carpet really clean in just one or two passes. It just doesn't make any sense to me.

Given what you've got, how about a Sebo canister with a power nozzle? In the US I'd recommend a Riccar/Simplicity, but they're not available with 240V motors, AFAIK.

Why is everybody trying to..

Talk him out of it?

He doesn't want a Kirby, or a Sebo. He wants a Dyson. Anybody would think you guys recieved commission! :D

I thought about doing this myself. Way back when. I would still love to try one of these machines. And I am pretty fond of Dysons. (What I seem to do now is buy a machine, try it, and sell it on. Just so I know what it's like..)

What I think you should consider is that it will be pricey! (machine + shipping + import charges + transformer) I think this is what put me off. If you get the machine and love it, great stuff!

But what about if you get it, and don't like it? Or get bored of? Or it destroys your carpet? (I went to Florida a few years back, and went straight to wal-mart to look at one of these. The bristles don't have any give in them. Now, I like a stiff bristle, but I think I would be cautious of using this machine regularly) It won't be so easy to sell the machine on, not without, what I would imagine to be, a big loss.

It's your decision to make though, just have a think about all the possibilities first.

I will however wait for the day Michael wants to sell me his DC17 for a fantastic price! :P

There isn't any harm in trying some other machines whilst you are making your decision though. Especially if you can sell them on easily if they turn out not to be the right machine for you.

Why is everyone trying to talk him out of it?

Because we don't think very much of Dyson, quite simply put, but if he wants to waste his money importing one from the US then that's up to him, not forgetting he'll need a hefty power transformer to make it work on 240V, which wont be cheap.

Yeah, I get that.

But his question wasn't about what you thought of the Dyson. He has asked how he could get a Dyson imported.

If you were wanting information about importing a Kirby, how helpful do you think it would be for people to try to convince you to get a Dyson?

It wouldn't.

I don't understand why you would bother to add to a thread that you don't care for?

You don't like Dyson. That's okay, but some folk do. They work for some of us.

It appears childish to fill a thread up vacuum suggestions, when it is completely irrelevant to the topic of the thread.

And it's something I see here, over and over. It's boring.

If it's relevant, by all means brand bash. But otherwise shut up!

First off he never asked if you like dyson's He asked about importing one from the USA.

I love very many vacuums and have a huge collection, Over 400 now.

I love dysons and always will, being an engineer I appreciate the technology that goes into them. I have a 110v dc28 at home( we are 220v in SA) and let me tell you something I have not seen a Hoover that can out clean it yet. If you haven't used it then you have no room to speak.

I have over a 100 hoovers in my collection ranging from really old ones ( 1935) to the latest ones.

I love the way that people say dysons are poor quality, ever owned a Hoover turbo power, They practically fell apart out of the box. When they were still popular here 20 years ago I as replacing 10 -20 back casing assembly's a week and don't think I am bashing your Hoover, I love the turbo power, Its one of my favorite Hoovers. I am busy rebuilding one at the moment.

There are many people out there who love dysons, You Don't, Great, keep it to yourself and leave those of us who do like them to ask questions with out the constant negativity.
