Hoover PurePower Goes Up In Smoke - Literally...

VacuumLand – Vintage & Modern Vacuum Enthusiasts

Help Support VacuumLand:

That's sucks, Jacob (pardon the pun). Hoover just ain't what they used to be. The Purepower was always a step down from other Hoover's, even when it was launched in 1997. Not a patch on the TP2. They've steadilly got worse and worse over the years, so it seems now that they've really hit rock bottom.

Be sure to let us know how you get on with returning it. I don't think you can go far wrong with Sebo's for reliability.

Thanks...

Thanks for all the positive responses and suggestions so far.

Mark D: I will DEFINATELY have much better luck with the Sebo, I have used plenty of Sebo's - some of which 15+ years old - and are more than happy with the performance of one's that have had even heavy use in commercial environments. Thankfully I was not hurt, and I was near the back door when I noticed all the smoke, so promptly unplugged and placed outside. I was not hurt, but shocked!

sebo_fan: Yes, I have two Panasonic Upright's, one a 1991(ish) Panasonic MCE-41N - which is my personal daily driver - but the PurePower was bought as a basic vacuum for a daily quick whizz vacuum, I know it wasn't the best, at all, but I didn't want to 'overuse' any of my collectable vacuums. I am sure a Sebo will be a much better cleaner and frankly I should have saved up an extra £100 or so and got a Sebo, and I wouldn't have had any of these problems.

Chris: I knew that Hoover are nothing on what they were before, even going back around 12 years you could only spend around £70 and get a TP2, but still, the TP2 wasn't as good as its predecessors, and back and again so forth. It's planned obsolescence, everything is made that way nowadays. But I definatly am looking forward to a Sebo, as you and many others have so highly rated, and down to personal use, I believe the Sebo is the way to go. I like the vacuum pun, I've noticed I have started more pun's than I did before, much to the annoyance of people who talk to me...

Tayyab: Yes, I am getting a Henry soon, but I was after an upright I could use fairly regularly without using one of my collection, so will be after a Sebo, which have proved to be more reliable than others.

sebo_fan (again): I am hoping to take it back to Argos, as soon as I find the receipt - I've lost it...doh... - but I am also hoping to get in touch with Hoover UK, I also find it unacceptable at only 6 week's old, so will have to see what they will do. What do you think they would do?

John: I'm hoping I'm the only person who this has happened to, as I don't want anyone to end up with a house fire, but I also hope that it's happened before so that Hoover don't just say it's a 'one off'. It definately is not worth having a name with such heritage and brilliance on it. It's not a Hoover to me. It doesn't beat, it doesn't sweep, and in it's current stage, it doesn't clean either, not that it was very good at it before either.

Desert Tortoise: Fair comment, or even a built in sprinkler system on the motor... :P

Thanks once again for all your positive responses and suggestions. I will report back after the next few days of which I hope involve resolving the problems.

Best wishes to you all.

Jacob

Jacob: Maybe a vax mach air is a cheap, upright vacuum that is cool that you can use? :) Or the carboots may have a nice cheap Dyson or Miele

Dont throw it away just yet

What you should do, is register the vacuum cleaner NOW with Hoover and then wait for confirmation of the guarantee. That way, the machine is registered with whatever guarantee you get and then you can throw the problem at them.

I would also contact Hoover UK direct AFTER you register the vacuum cleaner and use their FB page if you can leave a comment. On the basis that they are shifting all the old "high power" stock, there's no reason to why Hoover can't either replenish you with a new Purepower or if it was me, I'd ask for something completely different like a Globe bagless upright or something in its place.

After all, I don't think I would be happy to have a Purepower again for fear of a possible burning issue to happen again!

while the sale of goods act

means shops must sell new items fit for use as described and they are responsible to some extent they usually weedle the way out of returns with some excuse or another. unless you dont mind getting 'shouty' in the shop to make your complaint within earshot of prospective customers.

Hoover is your best bet so get it registered, although for a gurantee claim your gonna need the receipt to sow proof of purchase.

Easily sorted if you have lost it as Argos may be able to reprint the receipt providing you bought it on a bank card and you take that very bank card in for them to search on te systems.

Failing that simply buy the exact same cleaner and make some friendly chat with a cashier - something to make her/him remember you. Pop outside for a few minutes taking the cleaner to the car then walk around town for a while. Half an our later pop back, find the same cashier and pretend you lost the receipt and need to return it as you didnt realise your wife/bf/gf/flatmate had bought another cleaner already. sould be easy enough sealed in the box. this means of course you can keep the new receipt and register it on the same day.

Report the faults 2 to 3 days later :D

Long winded but I have done it before when ive been in bad situations with money and needed something sorting.

Thank you..

.. thank you for the heads up Robert.  I am aware of the Sale Of Goods Act and I'm definately adamant that I deserve a refund in a sort of way.

I unfortunately paid by cash so it gets worse and worse, I still have the packaging and the box, and have a foggy idea of where the receipt is, I bought some sheet's also and I think I know where the receipt is.

Thank's for the advice, quite a humerous but crafty way of getting the cleaner returned, so will give that a consider if nothing else come's of it...:P

Yes

I agree with you John. I think Argos have an outlet store on eBay UK which they sell refurbished cleaners, but sometimes you see on eBay Job Lots of returned vacuum's from Argos, normally the cheaper vacuums.
