I have two Kirby's, a 1CR and a DS50, both with non-functioning spring mechanisms in the handles (part that keeps the handle upright). I opened one up and the spring itself looked fine. I can not figure out what the problem is. Has anyone here dealt with this part of a Kirby before? Any idea which part might be broken? If I can figure out where the problem is, maybe I can order a replacement part.

Pam,

Fixing these handle springs is a very difficult thing to do. Here's a tutorial for models 516/D80 from this Kirby service manual... make sure you look specifically at the procedure given for models since the 519.

You will need a special spring-winding tool for this (SP123).

Currently available replacement parts:

1005 - handle fork pin spring clip

136373 - handle fork spring bushing clip

137067 - handle fork spring

137173 - handle fork spring shaft

137273 - handle fork spring bushing

137373 - handle fork spring screw

137456 - handle fork spring fiber washer

137579 - handle spring yoke

Thank you,

Ben

Thank you! I am currently trying to convince the vacuum museum to fix it. But these instructions will definitely come in handy! The mechanism is far more complicated than I had realized.
