Born in 1951...............

<span style="font-family: comic sans ms,sans-serif; font-size: medium;">........... so it would be the Electrolux model XXX.</span>

<span style="font-family: comic sans ms,sans-serif; font-size: medium;">My parents had this model when I was a kid.  I have two now.  One in Florida and one in NY.</span>

<span style="font-family: comic sans ms,sans-serif; font-size: medium;">They are going strong.  Use them often.

Born In 1956!

So Charles, I agree with you on the Electrolux Automatic E and the Kirby 516. My paternal Grandparents actually had an Automatic E, but unfortunately theirs is not the one in my collection. Other great cleaners from that great year were the Hoover 64 Citation, Hoover 84 Constellation, and (I think) the Westinghouse SC-1 Cannister. Here's a pic of my Citation.

And here's my Westinghouse SC-1 Cannister. An actual family vac, it belonged to my Aunt Lu (Dad's sister) and Uncle Jim, and I got it when they went into assisted living.

I was born in 1980.
So for me it would have to be the Rainbow D2-A.
I remember seeing one when I was about 3 years old. It was my babysitter's, I was fascinated by it until she turned on then I was scared of it. When I watched it running (at what I thought was a safe distance) without the dolly/ casters. I was fascinated by the churning water which overpowered my fear of the noise. Her D2A was exactly like the one pictured below. I remember it having the brown plastic switch toggle instead of the metal switch toggle of the D and D2 machines. I wonder if the lady still has the D2-A, I'd pay her a good price for it. That Rainbow would make an interesting conversation piece.

Not sure how to respond to this one.

I was born in 1963 but I've never been particularly tuned into machines from that year. I seem to have come from a family of old souls. My parents had a 1950s vintage Lewyt canister (pink motor w/gunmetal gray tank on a roller base) as their only vacuum up until the early/mid '70s. Were I a serious collector, this would be my "holy grail". My dad's parents had an Electrolux from the late '40s or early '50s (either an XXX or LX) that was in use up into the 1990s.

I wish I had the Electrolux but I have no idea what happened to it or the 'coffee can' Hoover that was stashed in the basement. I think that Electrolux sparked my affinity for the metal canisters from the '60s and '70s.

An in-home Kirby demo, of a Classic Omega around 1972 also impressed me greatly and gave me an affinity for that brand that went unrealized for some 40 years until I chanced to nab a nice Gsix from beside a dumpster three years ago. Oy! What some people will throw away...

Good question! HELP!

I was born in December of 1981. Benjamin (KirbyClassicIII) previously stated that Kirby Tradition was the model for 1981. However, the Kirby Company website says that the Kirby Heritage was "introduced" from January 1, 1981 to January 1, 1984.

So, what is the proper Kirby model for my birth year? Should I get a Kirby Tradition or a Kirby Heritage???

Hi Charles

<span style="font-family: book antiqua, palatino;">I can answer that question for you. I have in my collection the 3rd Kirby Heritage that was off the production line. It was a sales prize that my friend Nick won.
</span>

<span style="font-family: book antiqua, palatino;">The Heritage went in to production in September of 1981. So with you being born in December you was born when the Kirby Heritage was out.</span>

<span style="font-family: book antiqua, palatino;">What a great model that was. As they all are</span>!

I...

<span style="font-family: book antiqua, palatino;">was born in 1979. So I was on the born when the Classic III was out and being replaced by the Tradition...</span>

<span style="font-family: book antiqua,palatino;">I love both of them.</span>

Thank you, James!

@kirbymodel2c- You rock! Thanks for clearing this up! As I suspected, the dates on the Kirby website are crap. LOL

So, if the Tradition was already being sold in 1981 while the Heritage began production in September of 1981, wouldn't it be a "safe" assumption that the Heritage wasn't sold until 1982? Much as we saw pics of the Kirby Avalir beginning late in 2014, it wasn't available/sold until early THIS year.

I'm not sure which model to get in honor of my birthday. I think the Tradition would have been the "new" Kirby sold in homes in 1981, while the Heritage was being produced when I was actually born. HELP!!!! LOL
