I was just curious about what this weird slot on the back of my Kirby G4 is... I have just need using it to slot coins in that I find as I'm vacuuming and was just wondering if anyone could tell me what it is exactly.

From what I remember a kid, my Mom had a 518 and the handle was filled with quarters, from what I remember her saying was that every time you vacuumed you were supposed to put a quarter in the handle and at the end of the month you put the accumulated money toward your monthly payment. As far as I remember all Kirby's had some sort of piggy bank on their vacuums with the exception of the Dual 80, that was the first Kirby to have the new Delta handle and it just had a specked decal back there. Ben from Oregon should have an answer on what was the first model to have the piggy bank on the handle.

The Dual 80 was the first Kirby to have the new wide handle fork, therefore it was the first to have the Kirby Bank. The 518 did not have this because it still had the cylindrical handle with a red rubber grip. The D80 debuted in 1967.

My mistake. NO Kirbys before ~1970 had the bank. ALL Kirbys after the Classic 1CR (I think) had the bank. Excluding, of couse, the Sentria and Sentria II.

The 518 DID NOT have a wide handle and it DID NOT have a coin slot. The handle must have been a later replacement. The first Kirby to have a wide handle was the D80 in 1967, 9 years after the 518 was made. The 518-D50 had a cylindrical handle with thin grooves going down the length of the handle. And it was impossible for the cylindrical handle to accommodate a plastic handle back, where the coin slot would be.

The bank was as others have said, there to place coins as you vacuum. During a demo we used to tell the customer, "If you put a quarter in everytime you vacuum, you've made your payment."
Then we would drop a quarter in the slot and say "Here, I made your first deposit."

I know every Kirby from the Classic to the Ultimate G has had a coin slot. Can't speak of the others prior or after.
