another thing annoying about some folks and Hi-Fi gear is BASS!They just have to crank up the bass. When Circuit City was still open years ago-was trying a Pioneer receiver there and some HPM type speakers-was listening--all of a sudden an arm reaches over and throws open the bass control.I say-"Couldn't you wait until I am done listening?"Another time-a home theater system.on the scene on the screen a woman was using a sewing machine--the subwoofer level was cranked so high it sounded like she was running a locomotive.Turned it down-MUCH better.
Overall sound quality-starts at the recording studio--some recordings sound so bad you do not hear any "detail","soundstaging,"separtion, clarity,or definition. These have been taken away in the mixdowns-often done over crappy systems and monitor speakers. Many studios-radio stations,too-tailer their sound quality so it sounds best thru a car radio speaker,or a mono table radio. When listened over a Hi-Fi system-sounds overly loud, compressed, and distorted highs and bass. This is what most music producers and musicains want-of course the recording engineers want otherwise-the higher quality sound. But he is overruled.Recording engineers are normally trained to do the best recording results possible. But producers and muscians don't agree. So lots of crappy recordings.Doesn't matter whether LP,CD.And at a lot of these studios the enginners there don't know how to select the best microphones for recording particular instruments and voices. They try to fix it-with a producers advice-on the "EQ" control on the modern console.Remember when early recording studio consoles DID NOT have EQ controls. They were simple tubed mixer consoles-made the best recordings-and you weren't trying to mix down 22,48,64,or 128 tracks to mono or stereo. At best those early consoles were 3 and 4 channel.Glad some of those early RCA and Mercury custom tubed consoles have been restored. These along with tubed Ampex,Scully,Berlant Concertone recorders make the best recordings-truely worthy of listening to on a high quality Hi-Fi system. Some of these recorders do still live on-have my own Ampex 300.
