another thing annoying about some folks and Hi-Fi gear is BASS!They just have to crank up the bass. When Circuit City was still open years ago-was trying a Pioneer receiver there and some HPM type speakers-was listening--all of a sudden an arm reaches over and throws open the bass control.I say-"Couldn't you wait until I am done listening?"Another time-a home theater system.on the scene on the screen a woman was using a sewing machine--the subwoofer level was cranked so high it sounded like she was running a locomotive.Turned it down-MUCH better.
Overall sound quality-starts at the recording studio--some recordings sound so bad you do not hear any "detail","soundstaging,"separtion, clarity,or definition. These have been taken away in the mixdowns-often done over crappy systems and monitor speakers. Many studios-radio stations,too-tailer their sound quality so it sounds best thru a car radio speaker,or a mono table radio. When listened over a Hi-Fi system-sounds overly loud, compressed, and distorted highs and bass. This is what most music producers and musicains want-of course the recording engineers want otherwise-the higher quality sound. But he is overruled.Recording engineers are normally trained to do the best recording results possible. But producers and muscians don't agree. So lots of crappy recordings.Doesn't matter whether LP,CD.And at a lot of these studios the enginners there don't know how to select the best microphones for recording particular instruments and voices. They try to fix it-with a producers advice-on the "EQ" control on the modern console.Remember when early recording studio consoles DID NOT have EQ controls. They were simple tubed mixer consoles-made the best recordings-and you weren't trying to mix down 22,48,64,or 128 tracks to mono or stereo. At best those early consoles were 3 and 4 channel.Glad some of those early RCA and Mercury custom tubed consoles have been restored. These along with tubed Ampex,Scully,Berlant Concertone recorders make the best recordings-truely worthy of listening to on a high quality Hi-Fi system. Some of these recorders do still live on-have my own Ampex 300.

I have a set of almost new cs-77a speakers that I don't use to often but happen to LOVE the sound of them I bought them from a friend who owns an audio shop for $86 a couple of years ago, the tweeters have the normal foam rot but I can replace the foams... I dont understand why the tweeters used foam while the mids and woofers use a fiber surround. not too bassy and not too high, but just right :)

I CAN'T STAND the overpowering bass effects people tend to like. grr if it sounds good, great, don't add more to it because then it defeats the purpose. there a lot of kids and adults out there today who tend to think that bass makes the music, meanwhile there are people like us who appreciate details in music such as Dispersion, separation, clarity etc... there are many many features to good sound it is only those who appreciate it who know what those features are. I find it funny that you mention the radio station doctoring up the music to suit other devices, I tend to agree, I try not to listen to the radio too often because of the distortion so I use my ipod where I can set my EQ the way I want it. :)

Ok Mike, will do. I have a vintage, 81 I think Realistic 2100D, I think 138 per channel. Its a small 650 sq ft bungalo so have to watch it, makes the pots and pans rattle. I think maybe the hard wood floors carry it more?Have Bose in the den. Smaller 301s from 84

I thought it was a realistic that I saw in your picture, those were made by foster fostex and are pretty reliable, I bet it makes the pots and pans rattle! love the look of the lattice grilles on those, give it all such the classic 70's look

that turntable looks like a technics SL-D2 Quartz DD driven, GREAT TABLE TOO !!!!!! and those speakers are sooooo MINT!!!!!! I LOVE IT!!!!! thanks for posting these

ok so the D3 lol I have the D2 and love it, such a nice TT to have, great on those wobbly floors too because of the weight of the tonearm, I recently acquired from my pops my old Pioneer PL-516 belt Drive TT and retired the technics for a little bit. I found the D2 in a pawn shop and traded for it, (glad I did) and the pl-516 at the thrift store for about $27 which was a STEAL considering it is MINT and an expensive table to buy used via ebay

actually the floors are very stable, the place here was well built. have lived here 32 years, helps keep things in good shape not moving a lot perhaps.Have too much stuff now to move I would bet. There is a back up system in the garage also! Yes, hooked up.

David, the more you take care of it the longer it will last, People dont appreciate the older stuff like we do hence why we find it in thrift stores and garbage piles etc... that stereo set up you have there should be the last one you will ever have lol
