Vacuum Ad Proofs

As some of you may know, I also collect vintage printing equipment which I use on occasion in another hobby, old fashioned printing with handset type and a handfed press. In the spirit of tying the printing hobby in with vacuum collecting, I have accumulated some original engravings (or as we call them, cuts) of vacuum ads, and have finally gotten around to pulling proofs of them. These are "rough proofs," hand inked and very little makeready done for the print. Thought you all would find them interesting.
First, we have 3 Hoover ads, featuring the model 700. These 3 were known as "column ads," as they are the width of a newspaper column, and each one has a space at the bottom to insert the local dealer's name and info. Enjoy!

3 More Hoover Ads

As you can see, these 3 are all different sizes and were probably put in wherever there was room. Although these 3 didn't have space for the dealer's info, the one had a small space to insert the floor # where they were demonstrated. Amazing too, that since these Hoover ad cuts were also for the 700, they probably haven't seen ink since 1929!!

Various Brands

Here are some more of different makes and models. There is a Lux XII, a Kirby Classic, a G.E., and 3 generic ads for service. The Electrolux ad also had a cutout to insert the dealer's name. I'm always on the lookout for more of these, so if anyone happens to run across any, I'd be glad to buy them, provided they're not too expensive. Thanks in advance,

Absolutely fascinating ...

Thanks so much for sharing these. It's indeed amazing to think that some of them hadn't seen ink (or light of day) since 1929 and that the principles of the model 700 stood Hoover in good stead for a further 75-odd years.

Those were great, Jeff - thank you so much! I particularly like the one for the Hoover Floor Polisher!

If you used fabric paint on those, you could make some great T-shirts!

So am I right to assume that you have the original plates and these were run by you and scanned? If so.........THAT'S COOL!!!!

Absolutely!

These prints are from actual letterpress photoengravings, otherwise known as electrotypes, or as we printers call them, cuts. I inked them with a hand roller, then rolled them under the cylinder of my proof press to make the impression. I printed several copies of each one, then scanned them to be able to post them here. It's especially amazing to think that the ones for Hoover, featuring the model 700, probably haven't been inked in about 80 years!! Also, it's the one thing that ties the two hobbies (printing and vacuums) together for me. Glad everyone's enjoying them.
