"The NEW G-E Swivel-Top Cleaner, For Reach-Easy Cleaning!"

About a month or 2 ago, I was contacted trough E-Mail from a Man who saw my Love for General-Electric, And was interested in "Moving on" His Mother's G-E Swivel Top cleaner,  Dated in the Manual of January 20th, 1961.


They got it in '61 from his Father's Friend, Who owned an Appliance store. ALL the Appliances in their house Was General-Electric, Except a Kitchen-Aid dishwasher, He says.


His Mother used this Cleaner up until the early 1970s, When it was replaced with another, inexpensive G-E, And then an Electrolux took it's place in the early 1980s, Which still works (Obviously!)


They had another like it, One for upstairs and the other for downstairs. The other was unfortunately thrown away years back.


This little G-E than sat in a box in the closet for the next few decades or so, Until the Seller found it in that box while cleaning out his Mother's house in Summer 2011. He replaced the hose.


 


So, Here it is.

Have that "White mold" stuff on them, as do most of the older G-E attachments do.


Certainly something a nice hot bath will fix!


 


I also have a Swivel-Top in Cream & Brown, Which served as a cleaner for a repair customer for all these years, Until she


brought it in for repair, was told the motor was done-for, And Broke down over it. She really loved that vacuum!


 


Also (Not shown) Is the wrapper for 6 Disposable filter bags, Genuine G-E, from 1961!Along with the SPECTACULAR and soon to be scanned G-E Manual and bags re-order envelope.

Enjoy! Those were wonderful vacuums of that period. I have three different cordwinder models and love them all. They also made frequent appearances on TV shows back then.

I have its twin sister, right down to the same hose! However, sommmmmebody special is going to send me an original hose!

(P.S.: I do have the rubber cap for the blower, just forgot to stick it in when I took the photo.)

P.S.: To remove the white mold, put some Clorox bleach in a spray bottle. Put the attachments in a large bucket and spray them down with the bleach real good. The mold will disappear in a matter of seconds. Don't let the bleach stay on too long; rinse it off after a minute or so. Then polish the attachments with Armor-all and they'll look as good as new!

<span style="font-size: medium;">I have a question about this model. Was it made for a few years? Reason I ask is, some of you may recall my story about the time I broke into a friend's home to see his mother's new Swivel-Top, and it was this very model. The year would have been 1966-1967. It was a brand-new machine, still sealed in the unopened box the first time I saw it.</span>


 


<span style="font-size: medium;">If this model wasn't still being made in the mid-1960s, I can only guess that my friend's dad must have bought it from a liquidator, or maybe from a friend, or maybe on eBay hahahaha!

The c-7

Was made from 59-62, the one you have is an early one, it has the small tool bucket and wide drapery tool, also it has a cast aluminum handle, the one I have was bought Feb 2 1962, it has the big tool bucket, no drapery tool and a plastic carrying handle, also the first ones had a white vinyl hose, for some reason GE went back to a braided hose, as mine has.This MAY have been introduced in late 58 but im not sure.

The one on the right..

Is a 1963, it was the first to use the Twin Clean rug tool, with snap in floor brush insert, what I consider to be the very best straight suction rug tool ever, the earlier ones used a combonation rug floor tool with wooden rollers on the botton, these were good too.

The machine it dated

January 20th, 1961 in the User Manual, And no, The matching Swivel-Top was throw away long ago by the original owner, I have no idea what happened to the 70s G-E, And The Electrolux is still in use by the seller's sibling.


 


I also have that '63 Cream & Brown model, I didn't know it was that early though!


I did a thread when I got it about a year ago, Unfortunately the motor in it toasted, The original owner bought it to the repair shop, and broke down when she heard it was "Unrepairable". Thus, Into my possession it went.

Well, thanks to Hans Craig I now have a complete G.E. Swivel-Top! Well, it is missing one thing -- the curved metal neck for the bare floor brush. Anyone have one?!

He sent me two hoses -- an original green woven hose for this model that was really shot -- one end was torn nearly clean off -- and a woven hose of a slightly different green color from a different model that's absolutely perfect. It passes the "Roger Proehl Hose Test" with flying colors.

The as-new darker-green woven hose looks great with this machine. However, a big drawback to that hose is that, apparently being from a lower-tier model, the machine-end coupler doesn't swivel. Therefore, the machine is kinda hard to use with that hose as it tends to get twisted up like a pretzel. I =could= try to swap-out the original ends onto the darker woven hose, but I'm so afraid I'd wreck it trying to get the ends off that I decided to leave it alone since it's so perfect.

I'll use the darker woven hose when I have the machine on display. But when I want to actually put the machine to use -- as I did all afternoon today! -- I have another hose I can use: I attached the swiveling ends from the original hose that was shot onto a coiled, off-white vinyl hose. That hose actually looks pretty good with the machine as it picks up the off-white color of the motor unit's bumper guard. But let's face it -- woven hoses are so much lovelier!

Wow Charles, what a beauty! A favorite Aunt had that very same model, i want to say from around 1963. Large home with thick wall to wall 60s carpets. Blue green Electrolux Model G with PN 1 as the main vacuum,,and this model GE in the finished basment for doing that area, if she didnt want to drag the Model G up and down the stairs. I remember the GE being an awsome vacuum, and fun to use. For some strange reason, my aunt liked to use the hose with the curved end in the machine, and the strait end in the wand. - Weird,,and i told her so at the time that it wasnt right.(vacuum crazy kid!)
She said she just liked it better that way, and that the vac was easier to manuver and pull around. She had a house full of big bulky 50s/60s furniture, so it probablly was.

Also, A favorite cousin had that very same green woven hose but only on a bol model machine from around 1971. She got it as a wedding present that fall. The machine was a real pale green with dark green trim, had the General Electric logo on the front. No cord winder, and had a weird little up and down sliding on/off switch. The floor/carpet nozzle was the thin, cheap one. Was hard to push on real thick carpet,,was better on low pile/no pile carpets or bare floors. This cousin had real THICK heavy dense short shag carpet, this nozzle just wasnt the best for that, but was awsome for bare floors,furniture, above floor cleaning, doing the car, ect.

She finally bought a bol early 80s Kenmore (Singer type) upright for the shag, which was better for that carpet.

Also i remember a neighbor having a BOL model, and was the only vac they had for cleaning a large 70s thick shag type house. She did have the shag rake floor attachment tho. Evidently had bought it seperatly. It had a white vinal hose too, so must have been a little newer.

On these wider rug tools,,what are the wooden roller,spindles for on the bottom side? Do they do anything for the carpet, or just to help push the nozzle or?

Brian, it's funny you'd mention the long-handle end being stuck into the front of the machine. I remember a lady who did that, too! She had a later Swivel-Top in two-tone red (maroon?) and off-white. Every time I went to her house and saw her G.E. that's how she set it up. I also oh-so-importantly corrected her and showed her the proper way to attach the hose. She said she liked it the other way, and so it stayed that way!

I don't know much about the rug nozzle, rollers, etc. All I =can= say is that when I vacuumed my living room area rug today I was verrrrrry surprised at how much dog hair that nozzle pulled out of the rug! It was as if it hadn't been vacuumed in weeks but I had just done it the other day when I shampooed it, with my Model G and PN-5!!

Very nice swivel top! I noticed that the swivel connector has a small crack in it where the hose connects just as mine does. It must have been a weak point.
