It was ordered on May 5th so it would get here in time for my May 14th birthday but that never happened... VCDiscounter, whom it was ordered from took a month and a half to get it in. Hoover/TTI probably sells so few that they don't stock any in the US and had to wait for them to manufacture it in China then have it sent out here on boat... (cynical/bitter/sarcastic moment)

Well I found the box on the porch this evening and was so excited to get it in the house and open it! and pulled out a perfect Guardsman, took my time putting it together to make sure I do the best job possible then took it for a test spin on the rugs in the family room.... It sounds very much like an old Convertible! it winds up with a DEEP growl and then it has a nice smooth deep growl to it that sounds "very Hoover". it glides across the carpet very easy unlike my Sanitaire, airflow doesn't seem to be quite as much as the Sanitaire though. Overall I like it alot and it sounds so good!

I'll get pictures up hopefully tomorrow.

Ahh, very nice. The Guardsman is really one of my favorites. I think you made the right choice!

Funny about what you said above. We have had 2 Guardsmans and a Conquest in stock for years and they haven't moved. It's funny how people buy TTIs new plastic crap and skip over the last quality vacuums Hoover makes. If they bought a better vacuum, they would save money in the long run as they wouldn't need constant replacement.

gottahaveahoove

It's displayed and stored there, bedrooms not used by any more then a bunch of boxes and my vac collection anyway....The vacuums don't mind......lol

rexaird

That is indeed a clear fan.

arh1953: That's one of the reasons I picked that model over the lower end Guardsman, cuz I like how it takes shape of the Decade 80.

eurekastar: no the brushroll doesn't have beaters on it, the way the bristles are on one side of the brushroll it seems like it should have beaters, and that one sided brushing seems to be a bit off balance.

gotta have

thats what I was thinking too. Is that a toilet. Now I drink a lot that might not be a bad idea. I always wanted a urinal in my house my parents house had one and a bidet.

Bags and other question

I assume these use disposable bags. If so, the same bag as the Convertible?

My second question is this. Is a commercial vac designed to clean carpets as thoroughly, yet gently as a home vac would do. When I think commercial vac, I think of low quality carpet like you would see in hotels or office buildings, at least not the same quality that many homes have.

I ask this because I might have to break down and get one of these. But for once :) I would like a question or two before I jump in hastily. Chris.

I always do this...

I answered my own question. I looked at hoover.com and found that the bagged model uses type A bags and I remembered that convertibles switched from bottom fill to top fill at some point, a good thing !! I only have one 65 convertible and it is obviously bottom fill using type c bags.

But my other questions remain as to whether this would be a good choice for home carpeting. Chris.

Nice looking Hoover. How does the quality of the plastic compare to the 80's Convertibles?
It's sad to see the last of the "real" Hoovers now come from China.

Sanimatic

I find that my Sanitaire commercial vacs are more gentle on the carpet yet clean much better than residential/plastivacs. the "homestyle" vacuums often tend to have very hard bristles while my Sanitaires have softer but firm bristles that are nicer to the carpet. The same applies to my new Guardsman.

Constellation

The plastic quality is not too thrilling, it's alright - doesn't seem like it'll break in 2 seconds, but it surely doesn't seem nearly as good as the originals and definitely not as good as my Sanitaire S634.

wow!

What a marvellous machine! I love the design. And it looks like it was never used! What is a Decade 80 (it must be in the same range if I got you guys right)?

This one here is fabulous, can it be had in 220 V as well? Would LOVE to have one! I am thrilled.

Congrats, Jonathan! What a find!

Hoover Gaurdsman

I recently bought one of these from my old Hoover dealer in California. It is okay and seems to do a great job. I use it at the church when I clean. I was rather dissapointed though to see it had no beater bars. As soon as I find a new agitator with beater bars I am going to put it in the Gaurdsman. Other than that it seems like a good vacuum...
