The star vacuum was manufactured by the Star Engineering co. at Wolverhampton, England. The one pictured here was patented in 1910, and is a early model. The later models are painted orange and the handles are a bright polished steel with a robber cap-plug at the end of the handle- instead of a wooden plug found on the earlier models. I believe this model lasted from 1910 to about 1938.

Hi squarehandle

Basically you hold the pole handle in one hand and move the other handle in the other, pumping the bellows up and down creating suction. It's about as simple as that. So who didn't they work? it's like drawing soda through a straw. The faster you draw the more you get. Without an electric motor, none of these worked very well, but it was a start. Maybe cb123 can tell it better.

Alex Taber.

Star vacuum

Well, I can't really add anymore to Alex's description, because he stated it perfectly. I can say it picks up topical dirt pretty good, but anything deeper than that- not so good.
