The DAM looks really nice as well.............

Sani-Way

I've seen this same canister with a couple different names. I have the Royal version in blue, I also have a version called the Kingston (sold by Hub Vacuum Stores in New York) without the wheels. It belonged to my grandmother's best friend who bought it new right before moving to Florida in 1956. I acquired it when she passed away in 1989. With minor design changes, they are all the same cleaner, and these companies put their name on them. Does anyone know who the major manufacturer was?

Fred...

It was kingston, the Royals of that day all had tops that clamped on, the Kingston was hinged, Royal did not use the hinged top until after Saniway folded in 76, also the Saniway attachments are Kingston,,the way I heard it was that the man who started Saniway bought the dies and all from Kingston and manufactured the thing himself,in a small factory in Toledo, the major metal work was outsourced, and it was basically an assembly plant, the original rug tool 1960-1963 was exactly like a Kingston as was the cleaner, I have a Kingston owners manual and they are identical, beginning in 64 until they closed in 76 the Saniway was as the one you have the markIV , it started out with flat wheels and a braided hose, the ball casters were added in the late 60s a nylaflex hose about 73, when the owner died in 76 his wife closed the doors and sold everything off, I got all this from his first distributor Cyrus Fox of Asheville,if I can get a copy made Ill send you an owners manual for both the Kingston and SAniway,I have both versions ,also they had a germ killing contraption that went on the exhaust, I have one in the box if I can find it, hope this info helps Hans

Saniway...Sales

Also , they were a door todoor operation,mr Fox had the whole state of N.C and several offices, in addition to Asheville he had satellite offices in Charlotte ,Marion, Morganton ,and several other towns, he told me he sold over 40,000 of these machines between 1960 and 1976 as he was a dealer the whole time,he is deceased but his daughter still runs the shop in Asheville,She might have some records,I dont have the number but it is Saniway of Asheville Asheville N.C., they now are basically just a vac shop,I dont think they still have a sales orginization, the last time I was in there was 5 years ago or so,they were selling your basic vac shop stuff.

Engrossed

I am seriously engrossed in this story and I generally don't care about canisters. So is this a Royal machine? Clearly from the initial photos there is some connection. But can't tell from the story what the connection to Royal is. Chris

Fred...

I dont know for sure who made that thing first...Royal was making there version of it in the early to mid 50s, the only differences I know of were the switch..the Royals had a toggle switch to start with, and there top always clamped on till the later years, and of course the attachments were different, I do know that Kingston produced a lot of private label stuff, Firestone , etc, also Universal had a canister very similar, I have a Firestone , It is a little different, Sears el cheapo model was also done by Kingston, there had to be some shared technology there, but the only one I know for sure about was Saniway, and only because Cyrus Fox told me the story, Hope this helps some, Hans
