Hello everyone,

I'd recently been given a Model 89103 Royal Anniversary Edition 14" vacuum cleaner un-assembled in it's original box, from a widow whose husband owned a sewing/vacuum repair sales/service store. However, the motor shaft extension had been removed probably for the repair of another vacuum. Everything but the shaft extension and a few screws are all accounted for.

The first thing I did was call Royal to obtain a parts schematic. I was on the phone for 45 minutes with two very nice women who searched, but could not locate any information what so ever pertaining to this vacuum cleaner. Come to find out, Royal was sold to a Chinese firm TCI which explains everything.

Perusing the Internet for days, I finally ordered a shaft extension and a few other consumable parts such as belts from eReplacementparts.com. All parts ordered fit correctly except for the shaft extension P/N:380261, as the LHT motor shaft bottoms out in the shaft extension, leaving a 3/16-1/4" gap between the shaft extension and fan when snugly tightened.

This is the data label information on the nozzle housing:

Royal Anniversary Edition Vacuum
Model:89103 Plant:A
Household Type
Serial:194348731A

According to information obtained from the Internet, this vacuum was manufactured prior to Royal changing over to a drop-in unitized motor assembly, as this vacuum has commutator brush caps on the outside housing. The only other shaft extension I was able to find was P/N:380262, which supposedly fits models with an 18" nozzle.

My thinking at this point is: (A) Is this shaft extension P/N:380261 NOT the correct part for this vacuum? (B) This particular shaft extension may have not been machined correctly, meaning it wasn't threaded deep enough? (C) The motor shaft needs to be cut to facilitate shaft extension P/N:380261, as the original extension is obsolete?

Missing Screws (Zinc) - The following info from parts schematics on the Internet:

(Qty.4) 10-24 x 3/8" P/N: 1980743000 Motor To Fan Case Screw (Phillips Pan Head)

(Qty.3) 10-24 x 3/4" P/N: 1023309000 Nozzle To Fan Case Screw (Phillips Flat Head Thread Forming)

(Qty.3) 8-32 x 3/8" P/N: 1670013000 Motor Plate Screws (Phillips Pan Head)

I would greatly appreciate any help in this matter.

Thank you in advance,
Mike

Hi Ben,

Thanks for the input. Having read your content in the Royal Upright Vacuum History document, it's obvious that you're well versed in Royal vacuums. Would you happen to know for sure if the motor shaft extension P/N: 380261 sent me is the correct part for my anniversary model 89103 vacuum, or is there someone you might refer me to? If there is in fact a machining error on this one particular part, I'm sure eReplacementparts.com would send another out to me, as they'd already sent me a return shipping label.

Thanks again,
Mike

Hi again Ben,

As I mentioned in my initial post, I was on the phone for a total of 45-minutes with Royal Customer Service, first with an agent that later transferred me to escalated support agent, Marilyn. She looked for a good half-hour, but was unable to find anything pertaining to my vacuum. She said she'd keep looking and get back to me if she found anything, but that was almost 2-weeks ago.

When I called eReplacementparts.com about the shaft extension I received from them not screwing all the way onto the motor shaft, I also told the agent, Mary that I was unable to obtain any information from Royal. She told me that it's common practice these days for manufactures to purge all product information 10-years after the end of final production.

After receiving your previous reply supporting my one theory that the part likely was machined improperly, I called eReplacementparts.com and they're sending out another shaft extension. I did so as every parts schematic I looked at indicated P/N:380261 as the correct one. That said, I'll post the results when I receive the next replacement extension.

Thanks,
Mike

Ben,

Just a heads up. When I looked on Hesco's website and clicked on Royal, it explained that The Royal Appliance Co. is now Dirt Devil. Nothing at all is listed for Royal Metal Upright Vacuums.

Thanks again,
Mike

Ben,

Sorry, I was referring to the fact that they list no Royal Metal Upright Parts in their parts section.

The parts schematic link you provided worked just fine. I went back to their website on the schematics page and looked at all metal upright model schematics.

It's unfortunate that there is no parts schematic listed anywhere I've looked so far specifically for my Anniversary Edition Model#89103, as various model schematics both with and without unitized drop-in motors indicate shaft extensions P/N:380261, 380262, and Not Available (N/A).

Bottom line, do you happen to know what the specific differences are between shaft extensions P/N:380261 & 380262? If it weren't for this vacuum being in new/never used condition minus this one part, I probably wouldn't be so interested in reviving it back to health. Looking back, this was probably the reason why it sat in a box for years.

Thank you so much again for your continued help,
Mike

can you post some pics?

I am certain this would be an easy part to make for a machinist with a lathe.

I'm assuming it looks similar to this pic

Also, have you tried contacting Henry? or looked on their web site (they have parts for many old machines)

pulleys

If your fan just slips on and has no threads, then you have the correct pulley. As KC3 mentioned, maybe it is defective. The extension should look just like the above picture. If your fan has threads, then there are pulleys designed for those. The first picture shows the correct pulley for the slip fit fan on the left, the second are for fans with threads.

Blknblu and 3rdGenVacGuy,

Thanks for taking the time to reply. The shaft extension P/N:380261 in Blknblu's post is the one I received from eReplacementparts.com, that screws on the LTH motor shaft, but bottoms out between 3/16"-1/4" before contacting the SLIP-ON FAN.

At this point there are 4 possibilities here:

(1)The shaft extension P/N:380261 I received from eReplacementparts.com was machined incorrectly, where the threads weren't tapped deep enough.

(2)My vacuum is one of the few models that requires shaft extension P/N:380262.

(3)My vacuum is one of the models where the shaft extension is shown in the parts schematic as not available (NA).

(4)If the second shaft extension P/N:380261 I receive from eReplacementparts.com also bottoms out prematurely on the motor shaft, and shaft extension P/N:380262 is no longer available, 1/4" will need to be cut off the motor shaft in order for P/N:380261 to fit. Who knows, maybe there was a factory service bulletin at one time indicating this sort of fix?

Does anyone here know anything about shaft extension P/N:380262 that applies to only a few models? I was first under the impression that 380262 was specifically for 18" nozzle models, but later saw 14" nozzle guards also specified in the same parts schematic.

If someone has the actual parts schematic for my Model#89103 Anniversary Edition Vacuum, or knows and can tell me the specific core-model, I'd really appreciate it as Royal didn't have a clue that it even existed when I called them.

Thank you all again for your help,
Mike

Rex,

I wonder if you could be of any assistance to this fellow concerning finding an original parts list for his model 89103 vacuum? His question concerns the driveshaft, because he is having difficulty mounting it correctly.

Thank you,

Ben

Photos + Dimensions

Hello everyone,

A friend's dad, a retired appliance repairman, referred me to a friend of his who's a retired electrician that repairs small electrical tools for construction & janitorial companies in his spare time.

I called him, and he just happened to have a Royal 89103 Anniversary Edition Vacuum that his daughter bought at a garage sale, that he was cleaning up and replacing the front motor shaft and brush roll bearings. He was nice enough to mic the motor shaft & extension, then have his grandson shoot photos.

MOTOR SHAFT DIMENSIONS:

O.D.: 0.3070"(5/16")
EXPOSED SHAFT LENGTH FROM SLIP-ON FAN HUB TO SHAFT TIP: 1.453"(1-29/64")
THREAD LENGTH (From Tip): 0.630"(5/8")
THREAD PITCH: 32TPI/LHT
==========================================
ORIGINAL MOTOR SHAFT EXTENSION DIMENSIONS:

TOTAL LENGTH END TO END: 3.400" (3-13/32")
SHANK MAXIMUM O.D.: 0.500" (1/2")
BELT GROOVE TAPER MINIMUM O.D.: 0.366" (23/64")
BELT GROOVE TAPER MINIMUM O.D. DISTANCE FROM END SHANK: 1.772" (1-49/64")
INTERNAL BORE TOTAL DEPTH: 1.928" (1-59/64")
EXTENSION I.D.: 0.317" (5/16") 32TPI LHT
EXTENSION I.D. THREAD RECESS FROM FAN END: 0.920" (59/64")
EXTENSION I.D. BOTTOMING THREAD DEPTH FROM FAN END: At Least 1.500" (1-1/2")

I also looked at shaft extensions (pulleys) on The Vac Shop website. Apparently the Motor Shaft Extension P/N:380261 sent me by eReplacementparts.com is 1/8" longer at the front tip than the extension from my model vacuum, which may or may not make any difference. I can now rule out shaft extension P/N:380262 as it's likely too long, being 1/4" longer than the one measured from my same model vacuum. I'll call The Vac Shop on Monday to see if they might know which shaft extension I need, or verify if the one I suspect might possibly be the one I need.

Thanks again everyone,
Mike

CORRECTION:

It was the Vac Parts + website I obtained the aforementioned information from, and that I'll be calling tomorrow.

Sorry for any confusion,
Mike

Hello again everyone,

I just received the replacement motor shaft extension P/N:380261 from eReplacementparts.com, replacing the defective one they'd previously sent me.

This one screws all the way down clamping the fan onto the motor shaft, so apparently the first shaft extension wasn't tapped deep enough into the bore.

I'll post photos when I get it put together.

My sincere thank you to all that offered their help,
Mike

Well, I spoke too soon . . .

I couldn't help myself, and ended up putting the vacuum together tonight after dinner.

The replacement shaft extension screwed onto the motor shaft just fine, but when I got everything together I noticed that the tip of the shaft extension was rubbing against the back of the rubber access cover on the front of the nozzle.

The total length of the replacement shaft extension P/N:380261 is 3.600", whereas the original shaft extension total length is 3.400". That said, tomorrow I'll take the extension to a friend's machine shop, and cut .200" (13/64") off on a lathe, as the original extension is likely the one that comes up in the parts schematics as Not Available (N/A).

Teamwork!

Teamwork is a great thing!!

I have had great success with Steve Henry, owner of the Henry Company family-owned business in Ohio. Been around forever. He repaired Royals and many others. [email protected].

Ps. he was quick to tell me not to over-oil the Royals. One drop. He said he sees too many ruined motors from over-oiling.
