Always keep an eye out for machines being used commercially. Thought at first the three wire cord was wired into the machine after the fact, maybe the original cord was damaged and they replaced it with an extension cord they had lying around? Nope, it’s just plugged into the machines cord. Wonder how long they’ve been using it like this. Brush chamber is so clouded up you can’t even see if the brush roll is in it anymore. Yes,
This is definitely becoming a common practice. I think it's because new business owners don't know much about good quality vacuums, and price of course. Most people say "Its just a vacuum" but we know its much more than that.

Sad but true. The country club I work at uses a residential Bissell, which appears to be a Swivel Rewind Pet. Its brushroll chamber is also clouded up to where you can't see the brushroll. I haven't seen an extension cord being used with that vacuum, but the machine's cord isn't even wrapped up properly, just loosely thrown around the handle. I wish the porters had the decency to wrap the cord around the hooks, just like normal people would.

A lot of commercial vacuums only have an upper cord hook. The user coils the cord in their hand and sets the coil in the cord hook. When they go to use it they lift the coil of cord out of the hook and throw it on the floor by way of unwinding it. Easy and fast. If you are using the vacuum as a tool for your job you don't have time to carefully coil up a cord like a fussy collector would. You are expected to work fast and not waste the bosses time. Employers and custodians don't care if the cord is coiled nicely over both hooks. It doesn't get the job done any better. Even my wife gets mad at me for being fussy about coiling cords on an upright and even asks me why I bother rewinding the cord on a canister vac when I am just going to pull it out later. She always leaves the cord out. Same thing in our yard. Bought a nice reel for the garden hose but she refuses to use it. Just leaves the hose laying out on the patio by the two citrus trees she waters. Sees no benefit in coiling the hose up after using it. I have given up even trying with her.

Try starting your own business and see where you chose to use your scarce, precious cash. A fancy vacuum is a luxury most business cannot afford. Most loose money the first few years until they become established. I know I did. I wasn't going to go out and pay a bunch of money on a fancy vacuum when I was struggling just to pay my bills relying on a day job to cover my losses.
