why do people bash this vac? I hear it was a good vac (except the filtration) & the Housekeeper was the 1st vac 2 have on-board tools. What problems did the vac create 4 Regina? My sis had this vac since 1986 & LOVES the Housekeeper today.

Oh the list goes on with those machines. I have 2 of them.....one was a NIB the other was a damaged one.

The plastic they're made of is so brittle that if you sneeze near it, you risk cracking the body. The motor is 12.5 amps, which is one of the highest powered motors ever packed in a domestic machine. The hose is pathetically small. The bags don't' filter well. The rear wheels are on a plastic axle which was prone to breaking. The motor bearing housings were plastic and prone to melting and breaking.

That said, I actually kind of like the one I've got. I find the concept a good idea, it's just poorly implemented. It's definitely NOT a deep cleaner, but with a good belt it actually cleans decently well. They're just a chintzy machine that's extremely easy to break. They didn't last and the brittle plastic makes them highly unpopular.

Its a rarity to have a Housekeeper last for 20+ yrs but I'm surprised about this despite my sister having long hair & the hair gets wrapped around the roller; I get 2 remove the hair from the brush.

I think

The early ones were slightly more rigid(and i do mean slightly), and the design was great but definately not a deep cleaner. My aunt bought hers when they were still slighly new 1987(I think they came out spring 86?) and hers was used well and lasted 2 years with 2dogs and a big dirt yard, very dusty fine sand. Then she gave it to her sister who had it for another 2 years wich dosen,t say much but my other aunt she gave it to had my 5 cousins and 4 of thier children living there 10 people total.4 years isnt much considering she paid around 135.00 or so because when they first came out the tools were sold seperatly but if you knew my aunt that had it last they were a little rough so you might say they did get thier $$ worth.

As for my other aunt who wanted one soooo bad she got one for X-mas 1992 and it NEVER worked it was 8.1 amps "all new"light grey/dark grey hose etc plastic blah blah used 4-5 times per week and blew through belts like crazy like bi-weekly so half the time she was using the suction only and vacuuming with the upholstery nozzle.Regina replace the vacuum after 6 mo. with the same one the same thing belt after belt Regina wouldnt replace the vac again but sent her a brushroll saying that it must be the bearings...belt after belt again so I got her a 10$ Kenmore(Elite style) and she put the regina upstairs for 1-2x usee per month and by the time that one was a year old the wheels were gone the bottom plate was falling apart from not haveing wheels she was never so happy to throw something away.
I dont know what my point was im just tired and I ramble when that happens lol

I'd love to find a Regina Housekeeper 1000, which I believe was the first. I think somebody on the forum just got one NIB recently. Guess I don't have to ask why so few of them have survived? The same holds true for the early Dirt Devil uprights. No where near the quality of the Hoover Dial-A-Matic. Trying to find one is like trying to find a needle in a haystack.

Yes.

It was me that got a NIB Regina Housekeeper 1000, it is pink, and it came out in 1986, i think Jeff Parker told me. Nice machine. I like it a lot, and it sure was a convention show stopper for some people :)

I have a regina Housekeeper from the early 90s it is a maroon color and in my own opinion it is a pretty powerful machine. with a 7.8 amp motor I am very surprised. yes as said there are some flaws like the plastic it is made from. but all in all it is a good cleaner.

I remember these very well. There were SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOo many sold here in my little town. It was a neat vacuum with a great idea and I won't bash it however it did have it's flaws. The suction through the hose was good but through the nozzle, well that's a different story. It might have been good on shorter carpet though. The edge cleaning on the bigger ones were good, but I think the machine had way to many amps, but I guess it needed them to clean through the nozzle. The top of the machine was the biggest problem, it always broke off. I had a burgandy one from 1989 with the wide nozzle. I would like to fine one again just to have one. I remember Mr. Parker one time saying that the housekeeper would be a collectors item someday because it was the first of it's kind. (on board tools)
