Rainbow D2 Sound Insulation?

I've been wanting to complete my Rainbow D/D2 collection with the dark brown/coppertone model.  I found one on Ebay and the description said the motor was frozen.  I received it today and disassembled it.  I was surprised to find this Styrofoam insulation inside the dome!  I've never seen it on any parts list or schematic either.

Here it is installed inside the dome.  On my other D2s the chrome can get fairly hot.  So I'm guessing this insulates against heat and sound.

With the inner baffle installed.  I can't wait to get everything put back together to see just how quiet this model will run!

The motor is shot.  I don't think I'll ever be able to get it apart.  Luckily, I have a perfectly good motor on another one that I bought for parts that I can service and install.  The paint and chrome on this unit are as close to perfect as they can be.

The Motor

This is a view of the bearing plate.  The fan assembly sits on top of it.  The one screw you see was quite stubborn.  After treating it with penetrating oil and an impact driver, it still wouldn't budge.  I guess I finally used too much force with the impact driver, because I eventually snapped that screw head right off!  The rest of the screw can be extracted, but it's more of a procedure than I want to fool with!  Besides, it's kind of useless anyway because I can't get the lower nut off the armature!

A view of the lower part of the motor that sits on the water basin.  All manner of crud came out of it as I tried to get it apart.

The fan assembly.  All kinds of stuff fell out her too.  I think the previous owners used it to vacuum up dry wall dust and never changed the water.  Tons of dust then got sucked into the fans and the motor probably started making a terrible racket.  Thinking the motor was ruined, they then left the vacuum sitting on a filled water basin to rust.  This is all pure speculation on my part because the exterior of the vacuum looks brand new!
