Quick Release Cord Hooks on Uprights

What are your opinions on the prevalance of "Quick Release" cord hooks provided with so many new upright vacs?

I actually don't like them. Whenever you release the entire bundle of cord from these things, I find that 90% of the time you have to untangle the cord, which basically defeats the goal of making this a "quick" process. I much prefer to unwind the cord in sequence from the cord hooks, so there is nothing to untangle.

I find if I put the cord back neatly and when I unhook it, hold it all in one hand and unravel in large sections of cord and let it drop to the floor, it doesn't get tangled up and it's quicker than unhooking it all in sequence

I have to agree with Chris. Wrapping the cord neatly in very orderly, sequential "rows" makes unleashing the cord far easier. But for a really long cord such such as the Miele S7 upright, which I find to be longer than necessary, there is really nothing you can do to make the cord release process orderly.

I also find that the cords on certain brands as opposed to others, are less prone to releasing in an unruly mess. I've never understood what it is about my Kirby Diamond cord, which is also long, even if not as long as Miele, but it rarely is hard to untangle.

I like the quick release cord hooks-What I HATE are the single hook cord winds-You have to wind the cord in your hands-then put it on the hook-when you want to use the vac again-the cord can be an unruley mess.(Older Kirby ComVac,Eurika dust cup Sanitaire)Also I would think the single hooks would be a mess if you are a cleaning-janitorial service that has to carry the vacs in a vehicle-the double cord hooks seem to retain cords better.

I actually like them too, that is MOST of them. some are just so loose that you cannot wrap the cord up without it un wrapping everything. my Dirt Devil featherlite has 2 of them and they are both incredibly loose! I really dislike that vacuum! but for the most part, quick release cord hooks are convenient. I am actually suprised when I see a vacuum that DOESNT have them!

The Kirby repair guy here told me to wrap the cord in a figure 8 on the cord hooks. When I asked him why, he said that the cord will not tangle when wrapped that way (he then jokingly said "it looks prettier too").

I asked a firend of mine who does a bit of boating, and he confirmed that boaters use a figure 8 for that very reason.

A figure 8, eh? Wow...never thought it would prevent tangling!! But I'll try it!

When I was a kid, if I ever saw that the cleaning lady or mom or dad had wrapped our blue Eureka upright's cord in a figure 8, I would secretly get into the closet when no one was looking and redo the cord so that it looked like the neatly wrapped cords I saw in all the advertisements! Call me crazy...but hey - I was in love with that thing!

Guess I am going to have to rethink that one, eh?

8 Good for cord?

If you try this, you will see that the cord does release with less tangles when wrapped in an 8.

I have to say that all three Kirby dealers that I have dealt with in the Pittsburgh area always return my Kirbys to me after maintenance or repair with the cord wrapped in an 8. I have rarely seen this from other non-Kirby repair shops.

I have read here on VL that wrapping the cord in an 8, or too tightly even in the regular oval pattern puts a lot of strain on the cord. What do others think?

So far so good - no problems with cord strain, but I do try to leave just a touch of slack anyway. I've seen bent, smashed, pulled, strained cords, etc. (mostly computer equipment) and it's never a good thing. We're trying to store the cord neatly, not tie something down.

I too have seen those comments before Chris. I sometimes refrain from commenting on posts, as I don't want it to come across as 'correcting' others. Unfortunately however, there is sometimes a lot of mis-information 'out there.'

Half of your question or quote is correct. Wrapping the cord tightly can & quite often will put undo strain & kinks in the cord, especially the initial few 'wraps' of the cord.

As for the 'figure 8' wrapping of the cord, it does two (2) things, 1) it changes the direction of the cord & 2) it minimizes the 'coiling' effect, which both reduce tangling of the cord.

"0" vs. "8" ==== I'd sooner be an eight than a zeeeroooo. As long as it's a scale from 0 to 8. ~~lol~~

Thanks Bill. I was hoping that you would weigh in on this. I know that it does significantly reduce the tangles and knots. I will now be able to do it without worry.

My thoughts are the most common problem I had was they was not always enough room on them for long cords (especially commercial grade cords) but other than that I find them handy but not 100% essecential.

i like 'em...

i prefer cord rewind of course, but i prefer the quick release hooks as you at least have the option even if you dont want to use it. i was actually just thinking to myself how i wish my older eurekas had them, even though their cords are pretty short

When I started working with vacuums I was told that if you wind-up the cord in a figure eight it is far less prone to tangle.
Other wise, I like the Quick Release.
