All polished up! After a thorough cleaning of the motor and fresh oil in the bearings it works wonderfully! I have new cord ordered from Sundial Wire.

Its the oldest electric cleaner that I have, last patent date of 1913. I'm not sure of the exact year but old ads dated 1920 depict a model with a square nameplate, not oval like mine. So, mine could be pre 1920 or post. It came from ebay and it was only the second one I have seen there in over a few years. The other was in terrible condition and went for over 400 dollars. This one I managed to win for less than 300. I cant find out much on the company, the only other ones I have ever seen were in Stan Kanns collection.

Actually, the company is still in business making central vac equiptment. They ceased making uprights sometime around 1928. Yours is definitely post-1920. Their early 1920's ads read "look for the red band around the motor," and "the cleaner with the self-starter." I always thought the handle-actuated switch was brilliant. The company's link is below.

I'm just curious when you were at Stan Kann's to see his collection? I knew Stan for over 40 years, and spent every Sunday with Stan from the time he moved back to St. Louis until the time he passed away. Don't remember ever seeing you at Stan's or him talking about other collectors visiting.

When Stan lived in Hollywood, we visited together at least once a week -- had a standing date on Wednesday evenings for dinner -- and frequently more often, particularly when we were going to be performing together. He'd show me the "vacuum cleaner of the week" -- he rotated through all his machines regularly -- and would discuss it in great detail.
I remember his Ohios -- he had three of them. Two were the same model, the one with the red band, and one was older. He had a particular soft spot for the Ohio because it was the first vacuum cleaner he remembered ever seeing. He often declared that the Ohio had the strongest suction of any upright vacuum cleaner he had ever seen.
It was a sad, sad day for me when I said goodbye to him in person for the last time, the very day he left for St. Louis. And I still miss him terribly.

Stan has been gone four years, almost five (this September). I still miss him every day. I'm happy to have his Vac U Ette Wireless and his Old Style Special Hoover, plus Stan's Hoover 150 in the museum. He gave me his Air-Way collection (the extremely rare DirtMasteR and the rare-as-hens-teeth Air-Way Zephyr) before he passed, which live on in the Museum today.
