I made a pledge to not say negative things about dysons until i actually used one--- BUT--- I was using a DC-25 animal in a house with three-reapeat- THREE long-haired dogs. I vwcuumed the whole living room, which was filled with dog hair, and it didnt pick up CRAP. Yes, the canister was half-full, but the suction out of the hose was great. My guess is either the pet hair was literally stuck to the carpet, or the brushes werent stiff enough to pick up the hair. Opinions?

Brushes aren`t like typical American Vac`s

Strong suction never cleans well . It is airflow along with proper agitation. The Dyson Brush roll just doesn`t seem to have enough bristles or seem long enough as say a Kirby , Aerus,Oreck , Hoover Convertible ect. I think it a rather cool looking machine but as far as a deep cleaner I prefer my Kirby`s any day .Just my opionion .

No, the brushroll was clean- and like i said, the suction in the hose was great. I think what happened was the bristles just werent quite stiff enough to get the job done.

Wow that is so strange that the DC 25 Animal you were using did not completely clean your carpet?I own the same vacuum & I have three long haired cats I just luv how quickly & throughly my DC 25 cleans my carpets in just one maybe two passes.I know my old Hoover Dimension 1000 could not clean as well as my new Dyson. The Hoover would always leave little tiny hairballs all over the rug & it just had new brush roll stripes put into it just last year?Plus my new Dyson makes vacuuming so much fun now!I actually look forward to cleaning:).I was wondering is the Dyson you were using yours?Just curious? Thanks Dave

This is one of the reasons why I bought a Bissell Healthy Ho

My ex Craig has the Dyson DC07 & a golden retriever. Whenever he vacuumed, half the hair was wrapped around the brushroll & half was in the dirtbin. Needless to say, he was frustrated with the Dyson & on my suggestion, replaced it with a Kenmore canister vacuum; the Dyson hardly gets used now.

When I first met Craig, & he told me of his problems with the Dyson after a while, I tried it out on his carpet, which is medium-pile berber & was not impressed! The brushroll BARELY touched the rug!

When I decided to buy my first multi-cyclonic vacuum to add to the collection, that's the reason why I bought the Bissell Healthy Home 5770 over the Dyson. That, & I also didn't like the fact that the Dyson & most others at the time were using washable HEPA filters, which in my opinion is NOT real HEPA filtration. The Bissell was one of the few multicyclonic uprights that used a true, replaceable HEPA H12 filter- which is CRUCIAL to maintaining good air quality while vacuuming if there is no filters inside the dirtbin.

Also, if one was reading Consumer Reports at the time, the Bissell Healthy Home 5770 was also beating all the other multicyclonic vacuums, including Dyson, in their tests. That is, until the Dyson DC28 Airmuscle came out....

I know people will hate me for saying this, but, the Dyson brand is just a gimmick...

Years ago when he came up with the first domestic cyclonic vacuum cleaner, yes, it was innovation and a very neat invention, but he never really invented the idea, he just took it from industrial cyclonic separators and shrunk it down and slapped it on a Hoover Junior, and to date, I've never been impressed by any of his new creations, the counter-rotating washer was interesting, but I could see flaws (even though I was still fairly young when it came out), and the recent air multiplier, I've tried a few in different stores, and they just don't impress...

I do feel sorry for those who have shelled out on a dyson product, only to find out it doesn't work as it's supposed to, but, in the age of the sheep, people just follow what everyone else is doing, which to me is a very sad state of affairs...

There are two problems with Dysons.

The first is they don't have much airflow at the floor.
So they don't clean very well.

The the worst of all, is they have brainwashed their customers. Someone owns a Bissell Clearveiw, they don't change the belt or clean the filters, it losses suction. Time for a Dyson!

People are so stupid I read reviews from people who think carpet tracks are the result of suction. They think it's hard to remember Hoover type Y at Walmart. Your Bissell just needs 10 minuets of your time and your good to go. This could be with any vacuum, but Bissell is smart. They print the belt and filter(or bag) number on the vacuum.

Anyway, I have never experienced any large loss of suction, and I do abuse my vacuums.

I just got a Dyson in for service this week because it didn't suck anymore. Well the vacuum was fine, the reason it didn't suck is because the owner didn't think they needed the filter or yellow filter holder. I think people should have permits for owning a vacuum cleaner.

problems with Dysons

i have found that most customers fail to read the instruction booklet past the how to assemble section

filters are never cleaned or changed resulting in diminished airflow, and that air flow cools the motor so its at risk too. but hey, ill sell you new filters

OK Guys

We keep on losing posters (and some good long-term posters) because of Dyson-bashing. Please re-read the rules of the forum. Bashing machines creates a hostile environment - not something we want here. I am going to be vigilant about this. It does not create the type of environment we want here. I hesitate to ask but what is it about those machines that creates such rancor? I have one that was gifted to me by a friend. Not to my taste, but not anything that generates hostility! I really would like one of the canisters.

I thought everybody was having a nice civilized conversation about the downsides and issues with the Dyson machines. I didn't see anything become heated or anyone breaking out in argument. To me I just thought everyone was stating there opinions of a machine and stating why there opinion is that way.

Gusherb

This thread was heading in that direction - somewhat subtle. If you have been following the forums, this is one issue that has erupted in flames in some of the threads. A common and unpleasant direction. For some reason, people have really strong feelings about the Dyson. Remember this? Lost another poster. One of many.

Fred, unless I missed something in that deleted post above I don't think the rest of the threads input could be construed as Dyson bashing myself as was the case in some other threads. Nothings perfect and I like to hear other peoples opinions about them.
As long as the discourse about negatives/postives is civil there should be no problem . We don't want to turn Dyson into the "untouchable" where everyone is afraid to say anything negative about them.

New Member a bit disapointed in this site .

I thought I had joined a vacuum collectors group based in the United States of America that interacted with all countries and anyone who had an opinion weather a pro or a con about the many different vacuums out in this wonderful world. I did not realize you could only say happy and positive things about Vacuums on this site . How can we learn the pros and cons of all manufacturers if we can only speak about how much we love all brands ? I see other people stating facts about other brands both positive and the negative . This only seem`s to happen if some one says anything negative about the "D" word . Why is that this is the only brand that must be spoke of in a positive light only ? I have been collecting vacuums for over 35 years and thought this was a great idea where we could share our honest opinions about different brands hopefully the companies of all vacuums could learn from us the "experts" and build better vacuums so that one day we might find every brand to please all of us equally . I read a lot of negative (cons) about other brands such as TTI , Riccar , Royal ect. but only mention a con about the "d" word and it seems to anger some the most ? I read this as a learning experiance and even picked up a used DC17 to really try to figure this brand out , I guess I will just have to point out only the wonderful things about it which I think is really unfair . Danny

Sorry Guys

This site definitely values all opinions. But for some reason discussions about Dysons always seem to reduce to flame wars here. Any ideas?

BTW

My job is not easy. I don't have much of an opinion one way or the other about Dysons (except that they are expensive.) I stand back and watch what happens. But for some reason, when the discussion turns to Dyson, everything heats up and gets ugly. I have had a lot of feedback about this. Think about it.

Fred

Well, Daniel --

While I think your comments and your right to an opinion are generally valid.....we had a few posters in the past who REALLY got ugly about Dyson - not just expressing their opinion in a polite, objective way, but in a nasty, snarling, always-the-same snide manner. I think people do have a right to express an opinion about brands, but I can see why Fred is vigilant about this particular subject. MANY people were offended by those few posters' unrelenting Dyson-bashing. SO, forgive us for being a little touchy about the subject, but it probably does require Fred's review, given past history and events.

Very Understandable

I did see that person who was nasty and bashing the Dyson vacuum . Did someone in this posting "Plastic Vac alert" get that nasty ? I might have just missed it , if I did I am sorry . There are many collectors on this site that are very passionate about vacuums and sometimes have differing opinions both positive and negative and it seem`s that only when the "d" word is spoken in a manner of not praising it then SOME fellow collectors on here get very upset as PETEK from Ontario stated about staying away from talking about Dysons , but this seemed very informative . I think we are all adults and can hopefully express our likes and dislikes in a kind manner of every brand including Dysons and not have to feel like we are walking on egg shells . I really enjoy this site and thank you Fred and everyone else for great postings of all brands of Vacuum Cleaners .

Just a note to remember for life:

An internet forum is just text on a computer screen, it should make no difference to people's lives, and if it does, then they have their own issues they need to deal with personally... :)

Myself, I don't like dyson as a brand, I don't like the way they sell their products like they're the be-all and end-all of domestic appliances, I don't like the way they engineer things for the sake of engineering them, and of course, I don't like their product pricing for such poor products.

That is my personal opinion, challenge it if you may, but in doing so, it only reaffirms my opinion...

In a way I find Mr. Dyson and Mr Oreck somewhat simliar-both are out to push for their products.Dyson is the bagless side and Oreck is bagged.both are plastic vacuums with a high price tag.Just something I have seen of Bissel Bagless vacuums as "pateints" at both vac shops here-the Final filter clogs quickly-even some users have noticed that-"Its like I have to clean the filter after vacuuming each room"said one user.so she traded the Bissel in for--a Meile. The bagged Bissels do much better-clog less often.

it should make no difference to people's lives

well said
as long as no one
personally attacks someone
all opinions should be allowed
and respected
i may not agree with what you say
but will defend your right to say it
