A friend of mine just found this among some things given to her and asked me to see what it's worth. She is on a fixed income and while I wanted to get the most I could for her, I wasn't very optimisatic. Then I saw the "Cleveland 0 Mod" under the voltage and name. I'm not your average member, but I am intrigued with this hand vac. I didn't even know they made these that far back!

Do you know when they started making these? I saw a post that told how to get the manufacturing date from a code on the plate...well this one has no plate. The only identifying number I can find is "0". It is not clear in this photo, but it is to the left of "MOD", and even with the right edge of the screw below.

I thought it was interesting that it says "Volts 110 AC/DC. When was the last time houshold current was DC? It is a bit more clear with a bright light at an angle to put the embossed areas into shadow. The bag looks like it might be original. I'll try to see if I can pull up any wording that may be less faded. Just specks remain of anything that may have been printed on it.

If the body is chrome, then it was made in the 50s. The body looks chrome, so I would say 50s or higher. Though I am not so sure.

I can't say exactly what it's worth

But unfortunately, hand vacs, even vintage, are not very desirable by most collectors, most people just don't have an interest in them. This one also has a large amount of rust on it, so unfortunately, it probably isn't worth all that much. All the hand vacs I have acquired in the past were either free, or very cheap, that is under $5. Most of the time, you really can't put a price on vintage vacuums. It all depends on the buyers that happen to be on the market at the time. That is why some machines sell for both very low and high amounts on ebay.

Royal made hand vac

This was a good and common vac that was great for many jobs and could use hose and attachments. The above is less valuable with wear and rust. These might be more valuable with atts, box and paperwork. One of the rarest was labeled for Brunswick and sold to pool halls to clean billiard tables.

DC power-the universal motor in a vacuum can run on AC or DC-but to use the machine on DC you needed a two pole switch-AC can use one pole.If you used a single pole switch on DC--it arcs badly-even arcs over!!I have done this!!!Many power tools have two pole switches-so they can be used on yes-DC supplies--usually welders and some generators.
