I wouldn't say dying. Would YOU say that about Kirby just because they're coming out with a completely new model? No, the brainchild behind the Platinum Pilot is to compete with the Dyson Ball. They're simply changing for the times. It provides a viable alternative that has a longer warranty, free service agreement, and IMHO as long as it's still manufactured here in the U.S. is a better quality machine overall.

Why would you think they were dying....
Not at all, I think they have made a huge improvement to an all ready great machine.
Once you have used the Oreck, you will know that it is not all that bad...I love mine.

Doesn't seem like a bad idea to me.

Really, I don't see any problem with the modification of the classic Oreck, although I would not recommend buying the first ones on the market. For people wanting a more traditional Oreck, there is always the commercial line. Same for Hoover and Eureka.

I think is is bad news because it proves that they are not doing well! Also, I hate it when companies change their best product! Why would they go from a 21 year warranty to a 10? I'm not liking it. What next, a Kenmore branded Dyson, Kirby selling vacuums at Target?

If they were not doing well, then how were they able to afford the cost of the plastic, molds, etc of these new swivel joints? I'm sure they'll be keeping the traditional upright. As for the warranty, it's far from free. When a customer would buy a new XL21 upright, they not only pay for the high mark up price but the cost of all of the tune ups and replacement parts are included in that price. I wouldn't think an Oreck costs more than $100 to build, and that estimate is very generous.

Yes, that is true. But i'm very happy with my 2004 XL Classic, and I don't think a two speed motor or a swiveling head will really want be to trade my Classic in for that.
What I mean mean by them not doing well is that if they need change a product line 2 times within one year (which is rare for Oreck) that means that, in this case Dyson, is steeling their customers or taking their market-share. I just hope they won't come out with a bagless vacuum.

Well, it's no slimline sleek beauty like the Miele S7 (which has one major flaw in the hose department) but other than that I like it. Oreck designs their vacuums for hotels, motels, casinos and Monster Homes with acres of carpet and hard floor. Flashy massive SUV/truck looks in the front end with massive new blue headlights, Raptor Claw handle for big hands (doubles as a wreckingbar)and easily accessible large capacity bag in the back - it's the Hummer of American Vacuums. And that ain't at all a bad thing. And I like the soothing color combo and 'airwave' graphics on the actual cloth bag.

I like the new colors and design of the machine, almost tempted to buy one, but I'm not sure yet! We'll see how well this swivel joint holds up, it might be very problematic.

So has anyone else seen the Ad on TV for the new Oreck steamer mop? Really looks neat. I too really like the Oreck. They may not be a deep cleaner but they do the job for the average person. They are over priced but then so are a lot of things.

I personally have always loved Oreck, the commercial line has actually been in production for years, and years, I first discovered them in 2004 my Home Depot store used one. I visited my Oreck store here in Des Moines last night and the owner told me that his sales have actually been up, even with the introduction of Oreck into the main stream market (Target), He said that they have had a huge influx of people wanting to go to a bagged vacuum.

I would suggest an Oreck to anyone with low-pile carpet. When my grandparents needed a new one, they asked me about the Oreck, but I told them that the belts would burn out REALLY quickly on their shag carpet. Now they have a Hoover Convertible. But it's sad Oreck has to compete like that.

Hey that looks good to me. I have the Oreck Platinum upright and I love the machine. I have had Orecks that I really didn't like but this one really works good and so quiet and easy to use and store. Oreck service was excellent when I took it in to the shop last week.
I NEVER thought I would say I liked an Oreck but the Platinum set is great. Much greater air-flow with the canister too.

I think orecks are quite cool, no matter how many flaws I heard about. If they realy wanna improve then it would be good to make a metal one with a better motor but with all of the features of the new vac. then I think it would be closer to being worth the money.
I have a felling that kirby will probabley make a cyclonic vacuum one day but its like ive allways said, its not "truly" cyclonic unless its a dyson or something of a drasticaly similar design, other wise its just forcing air through a filter unil it cloggs up.

Well, Nathaniel, then you're really missing out. If you've never tried the Platinum, or it's predecessor, the XL-21, I urge you to do so. It's completely redesigned from the classic line, has better filtration and churns out 33% more suction. The roller brush actually guides the vacuum cleaner forward. To me, adding a swivel coupler is only an improvement on an already fantastic machine.

Morgan was so kind to let me use his at the '08 convention and i was hooked. I think i got one like a month after, or something like that. Its an amazing machine. Nothing like a classic Oreck. At first i didnt even think it was made by Oreck, but it sure is. I have pics of it and my little Oreck XL4000 (made by whirlpool of course) but you can tell the difference. The innovation over the years is quite remarkable and his attention to usability has come far. The XL4000 is a short, loud, grumbly little thing which i am sure to some was amazing at the time. Now you see the new XL21 and platinum and you dont even think it would have the same name on it. But i must say, you're missing out by having a Classic..try an XL21 and BUY one, you will no be dissapointed. You can get them on ebay for a mere $200 roughly, even less if you're willing to buy one that just needs a belt, or something just cheap like that. Please keep an open mind. Vintage sweeping is getting outdated (no pun intended, lol) come to the new age of Oreck and Dyson. Vintage is for collecing, and the new stuff is still enjoyable too. Just try before you judge

Has anybody heard of the GarryVac before?
Normally I am not a big fan of Oreck vacuums-but the Platinum Pilot sounds like a sweet little machine.Orecks answer to the swivel neck upright vacuum-competition to the Dyson Ball,and Meile S7.At least both Kirby and Oreck are innovating their machines.And for both of them at the present-Oreck and Kirby aren't owned by some Chinese company-their machines are made in USA.Would like to try an Oreck Pilot vacuum.Aren't GarryVacs made in China?
I believe that the GarryVac is made in China...I am not sure though.

I had a feeling "Garry" would be a flash in the pan. Guess when the company folds, the lifetime guarantee will be out the window. I sent them an email when I first saw the infomercial, asking them (among other things) where Garry was made and how long they were in business. I never got a reply.

With the Gary vac, I've never used one, but when I saw it on TV I knew they would be sued ether for showing and saying the brand names on TV, or their self-selling bag.
