In my quest for a Kirby D50 headlight cover, one of the places I went was my friend's vac shop here in L.A. He didn't have a D50 but did have something else for me! He said, "There's an old Lux up there we took in on trade. You can have it if you want it."
I went up to their vac graveyard and there sat a fairly nice Electrolux Model E. It's a big scuffed up but I've seen a lot worse -- and there are no dents. I plugged it in and turned it on and the motor purred just as nice and sweet as could be!
I brought it home and opened the front cover and saw that it had a cloth bag in it. The bag was very clean - spotless, in fact. So whoever owned the machine took care of keeping the bag clean.
Then I took off the back cover and saw it still had a filter back there! That's something you hardly ever run across any more because when the Model F came out, Electrolux told people to remove the filter and replace it with a cardboard gasket (to make the rear cover sit snugly) -- the filter was no longer needed due to the multi-layer dust bag.
The only downside to removing the filter is that the machines are quite a bit noisier without it. But the suction is slightly improved and the motor doesn't heat up as much.
As you can see, this filter is pretty dirty. I wonder if it was ever replaced!
