My entire family has owned Electrolux/Aerus vacuums upright & canisters since the 40`s and have never had reliability problems. As far as power they have very good power. My mother still uses her Discovery II Advantage every day since 1986 or so . I never even changed the belt as it is a geared belt. I would buy one from someone on eBay as you can get them at a great price. Just make sure the person has close to 100% feedback.

I have to agree with Dan as the last word. Areus electrolux, uprights are a great machine for power and long term use. I have a used Discovery, like my Aunt had brand new back in 1986 too. It just keeps on going. Plus the Side kick is so great for the car, steps and upholstery. Unlike any air driven nozzle, just no
belt problem or power problems. Llke Dan I am Kirby No 1 because I can use it on the hard floor, just as well as on the carpet. Now the Lux upright is even better
when it comes to doing both any carpet level I have, plus the hard floor. No1 because of the automatic adjustment of the floating floor nozzle. No2 Just turn off the brush at the flip of the switch for just suction on the hard floor.
I decided to add another Lux upright as I wanted a Head Light. So I now have a Lux Geniess. They both will stand up to any of my Kirby's for wear and tear. Plus Lux uprights are easier to use, as well as the easiest bag to change.

Aerus upright new more powerful motor than before

In regards to reliability and durability, the Lux uprights have stood the test of time. But, I do agree with some of the posters, the early versions were completely gutless, and would get clogged up at the bend because they just lacked enough power. However, this new guardian now has a newer, more powerful motor, giving close performance to what their canister would put out a few years ago.

I always liked the Epic 3500. It's very versatile and the attachments are TOL Lux hose and attachments. No collapsible hose. The machine is tippy but so are a lot of uprights. The hose attaches to the top, so it reaches higher to clean overhead. The shortfalling of the Epic was an anemic sunroom motor. I think it was 200 air watts and the lux 4000 had 250. The new one has just under 400, so that issue is rectified. I mat buy one now that my interest is sparked.

You'd be in great shape with any of the vacuums you're considering. I have the Miele and the Sebo X5. They're both wonderful. If u buy the Sebo, order the HEPA pack. It has HEPA bags and filter andis better than the standard pack.

Seems the push is for the Aerus upright. What I noticed is the Sebo and Miele have a suction control. The Aerus seems a bit stark compared to the rest. The others swivel and have more features. So far I'm onto the Sebo Felix as the one. The X4 does not turn the brush off....to me that was pointless and $200 more.

If you have a housekeeper, you might do well to get a model that is tough and simple to use.  When I move next month, I'll be hiring a housekeeper to clean my house.  The size will be too much for me to handle alone.  I'm not sure I want any housekeeper touching my Kirbys.

Couldn't take it anymore

The curiosity surrounding all this was too much for me. I bought one today. I'll use it later in my bedroom and let you know what I think. I know it's a really great machine. It has a LOT more suction than the Epics I used to have, so that fixes the Lux's only real weakness. More to come. Bernie the Electrolux dealer just dropped it off, and it hasn't left the spot where he set it. Here's its first photo op.

BTW, this was my first opportunity to show Bernie my collection. I wish I had planned it earlier so John could have been here for it, but I needed to accommodate Bernie's schedule since it's a long drive for him. He enjoyed himself and used a lot of my machines.

Could you e-mail me, and give me Bernie the lux representatives contact info. I have tried to locate one each time we have been in St. Louis but no luck. I have a Lux 4000 with the onboard tools but it is top heavy, the suction is great though. I also have a discovery,,, first model, suction is kinda weak on it. I clean houses and I love these machines as they are very easy to maneuver and clean under beds and such.

I live in Quincy IL and our local office closed some time ago.

Wow you seem to be like me , everytime I see a Vacuum I like I must purchase it or I get very excited until I get what I want . You will love that machine it is really an excellent upright and I find myself pulling that one out to use the most out of all of my 200+ Vacuum cleaners .Enjoy using it as I am sure you will be quite pleased with it .

Very nice looking machine. Let us know what it's noise level is after you had a chance to use the machine. I would also like to know if the handle has that "heavy" feeling like so many of the other new uprights.

The new Guardian is just like using a Discovery or Epic except it pulls almost 400 air watts instead of 200. It's no louder. The new brush roll (that's been around a few years now) is great. It's a very good machine. I'm glad they kept this same design and fixed the suction deficit. The new Luxes are bright white, pretty machine.

If you're looking at the Felix vs the X4 or X5, then the comparable Miele is the S168 Universal Upright with a power nozzle vs the S7 full size uprights. Check those out if you're thinking about a smaller vacuum. The only machine that you've brought up that I don't have yet is the Felix. I've used one just once, and it was very good, just like I'd expect any Sebo to be. The Miele Universal is terrific, but the bags are small.

I haven't used the newest Guardian upright, but the last Electrolux upright I owned was a brand new Aerus Lux 3000. This machine had the new and much improved brush roll, which can be used in any Lux upright machine, and it also had a more powerful motor. Ive had the Discovery II, an Epic 3500, and the last was the 3000. While the Discovery upright design has been around for probably 25 years, they still have yet to be beat. The ability to use the sidekick is wonderful, and while they can tip over they dont seem to tip as easily as other machines. One of the nicest features of using tools with this machine is that you dont have to fight some awful stretch hose that is constantly pulling backwards, and to top it off it has the traditional Electrolux pistol grip handle that has been around for the past 60+ years. Ive seem the ProLux machines used in a commercial setting as the company I worked for had them in every store. I can tell you that they can stand up to a lot of abuse and still keep going. While the Lux may not have the same suction power as the Miele, it has stood the true test of time. These machines hold up well and give years of dependable service. Electrolux/Aerus is not exactly big on changing thier model line around often, but when it comes to their upright, it just doesnt make sense to redesign something that already has worked so well, just like how Kirby doesnt put out a completely new machine every 5 years. If its not broken, dont fix it.

Electrolux Aerus upright design

I've been saying for a long time that I recommended Electrolux Epic uprights to people looking for a versatile vacuum. Again, it needed more suction, but eve as it was, it was a very good cleaner. As the bag filled, the power dropped noticeably, but even then it cleaned well. That problem is fixed now.

The reason I like the Electrolux upright design is that it's great with tools. Tools-on-board machines are undermined in the usefulness by the collapsible hoses, as Bimmer740 pointed out. They're terrible except for putting the machine at the bottom of a staircase and cleaning as far up the stairs as the hose will reach. Will the Aerus Lux, you've always gotten a full set of TOL hose and attachments, including the Sidekick, so you can use the upright as a canister on hard floors just by putting the matching floor attachment on the wands (full length wands) and vauuming normally. (I've never been much for just turning off brush rolls on power nozzles or uprights and cleaning just with air and no brush bristles touching the floor.)

Also, the Lux machines were in the filtration business before others even considered high filtration as an important performance metric. The cheaper Lux bags filtered to one micron. So did the after filters. The IOTA bags were better than that when they made them (and I'm still upset they stopped), but the newest bags supposedly filter as well as the IOTA bags did. The base machines have micron after filters, and the Guardians have sealed HEPA filters.

I worry some that the Aerus Lux company might not make it, but, if they don't, it won't be because their upright isn't a fantastic cleaner. My single piece of advice for Lux is to lengthen the plastic wands and improve on the quality of the plastic wands and power nozzle necks on the canisters. The upright uses the classic wands and tools, so it's not an issue with this machine.

I recommend the Guardian upright. It's a solid, effective iteration of a very effective design with effective improvements over its predecessors.

I must have read over your post about having a cleaning service use your machine. We have had several different housekeepers over the past 15+ years and they have all preferred to use an Electrolux. I think because they are pretty much "idiot proof". The power nozzle shuts off if it gets jammed, the belt never needs to be changed nor will it break or burn up. If somehow the suction motor should over heat, it will also shut off. Although I dont know if the new uprights shut off when the bag is full like the canister machines, they do have a very visable bag indicator light. When I traded my Electrolux tanks in for a Miele Red Velvet and BlueMoon years ago, I was extremely happy with my purchase, my housekeeper however was less than thrilled to say the least. Like I said above, the Lux can stand up to abuse and I know that some of our housekeepers havent exactly been very gentle with the vacuum they use. Also, some of the European machines just have too many electronic components and various choices in cleaning levels that cleaning person who comes in to clean and move on to the next house just cant be bothered with.
