My new Aerus Vacuums-part 3

Funeral Director,
I am so disappointed that you reported the "doggy odor" coming from your new Aerus with the bag only 1/3 full. I was so hoping that would not be a problem with the new bags and 2 different filters.
I guess I should say thank you as you saved me about $1500..00. I have been so interested in the new Aerus, but not if it smells. Always loved the Electrolux.
I was told a very similar story about a high end German vac but when I went to the vac store, the second I turned on the demonstration machine, it smelled foul. They said it was JUST because it was the demonstration machine. I should have know better but I bought a new one and within 2 weeks it smelled every time you turned it on.
I think if I didn't have allergies and did not own a pet, it might not be bothersome but who wants their whole room smelling foul every time you have to use the vacuum. Also can't use the "scents" with asthma problems.
I just pitch the paper bag every 2 weeks in the Lux we use upstairs but it uses the old style cheaper bags and no expensive filters to replace and the cocker spaniel is not upstairs.

Funeral Director,

I am surprised that you smelled doggy odour especially since the Lux has the before and after Hepa filters as well as the charcoal filter. Once I have used mine for awhile I'll report back if I notice any odour.

My new Aerus Vacuums-Part 3

Funeral director,
You may have hit on an important difference. If a user does not have any pets and is non smoker and no allergies or asthma it may make a big difference in what vacuum will work for them.
I have never understood if my dog is perfectly clean, the house is clean why a vacuum cleaner will stink so much.
I grew up in a non smoking house where the pets were never allowed in the house and we had an Air-Way so it was not until I went to work for Electrolux and out on home demonstrations that I noticed REAL FAST how a lot of owners machines just were horrible smelling and nasty.
It must be that you have bacteria and it is just sitting in the bag incubating in the dark until you turn on the high speed motor and blow air through the mess that you get the odor.
I could never understand how people could stand to use their machines.
Here would be my cause of any odors if I used a bagged machine and he is brushed every day, bath every few weeks and to the groomer every 6 weeks.

Smells

All vacuums with a bag that fills up will eventually have some sort of exhaust smell to it. It will probably have more odor if you have pets, unless you bathe them twice a week. A bagless vacuum will probably do the same as most people do not empty the bin until its beyond full or clean/replace the filters. Its the same concept with a microwave range hood that blows the cooking smell back into the room. Those carbon filters only do so much. When the range hood is designed to exhaust outside the home, cooking odors become minimal.

The best way for no odors is central vac! The whole unit mounts in the garage or basement.

Ok, I have a large always shedding German shepherd and have absolutely no order coming from my platinum. According to my allergy Dr, the large majority of most dust is dead skin cells from people and waste matter from the dust mites the feed off it. So, if there is an order, it's not coming from your dogs, for all you dog lover fanatics like me out there. The carbon after filter in the platinum so working as it should and eliminates and bag order from whatever the cause. I do vacuum all the time, and go through a bag every 3 to 4 weeks so that could also be a reason for no order. As mentioned , any bag in any machine will developed some order is it sits for a long time. As far as the bagless vacs, are concerned wait till you don't wash or change those filters for any length of time. Talking about order let alone the dust that goes back into the air.
Btw, it is actually the dander in pets, not the hair the gives allergy suffers a fit.

Lux Platinum Smell

Hey Guys,

I had not used the Lux for several months so I was surprised about the smell. I had Miele machines I took home as trade ins that acted similarly as well. Since I picked it up a couple months ago on Craigslist, I have primarily used the Rainbow E2 Onyx with the new side-drive enhanced enhanced power nozzle with rotating corner brushes and LED. There is something to be said for taking out a new vacuum every time you vacuum and also the very low total cost of ownership to go with the excellent performance of the Rainbow. On a side note, a Veridian particle tester like the ones used at lux placed at the exhaust of the E2 Onyx runs about 100. The Platinum and Miele read zero so very good emissions but not perfect from allergy/asthmatic standpoint on the Rainbow. Did I mention the aromatherapy capabilities of the Rainbow?

I have and like the new Sebo D4. Especially the power nozzle and overall quality. I also like the cloth bags. The ET-1 is the best nozzle of the three and the bristles extend WAYYY below the base to make it self propelled and actually remove sand from the LL Bean MudHog door mat at the house. Forty feet of quality rubber cord on a rewind is to die for. Long hose, telescoping wand, swivel hose and conical hose. Just plain nice all the way around.

After the new year, you will see my Lux outfitted with the Orange Sebo ET-1, Lux E-rohr telescoping wand, attachments and braided remote control hose that controls the canister and power nozzle. The holdup has simply been the new extended elbow from Sebo for the Lux telescoping wand that now does not require the Sebo to Wessel/Lux adapter for the Lux Powerprof. A couple of friends are electrical engineers so this has been a quick trip back in time to 4th grade science class and is the configuration the unit should have shipped with in the first place. I should also be able to report on the Lux Mediclean cloth bags and Swissaroma for those who are interested. Perhaps I should have gone to engineering school because these changes make the Platinum close to perfect.

My new Aerus vacuums -Part 3

Brain,
Am I following you correctly that you are replacing your new LUX power nozzle with a Sebo power nozzle?
Have you tried the new LUX power nozzle or were you using the first edition that came with the machine?
What would be the advantage except the longer brushes? I know too many questions!

We have three inside cats, which is four too many, and a Welsh Corgi. I honestly have never smelled pet odor coming from the machine. Not once. However when I sucked up a stinkbug, that came through the charcoal filter just fine. I will be coming up on a year of use soon, and then I will install a new filter.

New Aerus vacuums -part 3

John-now that sounds like a GOOD test for the filtration on the Aerus!
I like the position of the wheels on the machine. It looks like it would roll over door sills very easily.

I think the key is how much you use the machine, that is, do you use it 2-3 times and put it away a few months? I would imagine that could be a situation where you will have a stinking bag. We use our Platinum on a regular basis, the bags get full and I change them.

Love the newly designed power nozzle. It produces very little sound. People forget just how advanced Electrolux was. The power nozzle they designed 20 some years ago is still relevant today and in some cases still has not been matched by competitors. They don't really need a new design. It is STILL the ONLY household power nozzle that combines all of these features...
1. Commercial sized at 15 inches for faster cleaning
2. L shaped for easier cleaning
3. Ultra thin notebook computer sized for easy access
4. Side mounted belt
5. Central suction path
6. Rubber bumper for furnite/wall protection
7. Chevron brush roll
8. Headlight despite ultra thin design
9. Corner cleaning slots
10. Automatic height adjustment
11. Shut off circuit protection
12. Cogged anti-slippage belt

It's ahead of the times design means it's viable for generations only requiring the occasional tweak.

update..

I have owned one of these since july 2012....still going strong, due for another pre motor filter though.
It has normal scuffs and marks on it from alot of use, lots of outside use vacuuming the cars.

Waiting on Godfreys to stock the Sebo powerhead, the orignal (wesselwerk?) powerhead is very small and doesen't do a good enough job of picking up dirt compared to the full size powerheads.
I noticed a few differences between our models and yours...

-The vacuum won't turn on if the door is open
-It shuts itself off if the bag is full or overheats (happened once)
-There is a storage clip on the vacuum for the powerhead/standard head to store it on the unit, vac will go in standby mode if done whilst in use.

And on a very positive note, we have lots and lots of the scent cartidges!
If anyone wants me to purchase some and forward them on, send me an email at [email protected]

I don't understand why they changed the Platinum so that it will still run if the bag door is open. You can't however shut the door if the bag is not present. Also the removal of the dial to adjust the type of dirt being vacuumed as well as the auto shut off and opening of the door is a step back in my opinion.

Would you be able to post a pic of the scent cartridge?

Thanks.
Gary

Whoops

Sorry I must correct my other post, the vacuum WILL turn on if the door is open, I recall the salesperson sticking the vacuum to a box and it held itself in the air, my partner was amazed.... haha

Thanks for the pic of the scent cartridge. It is hard to tell from the pic but the shape of it doesn't seem to be the same as what would fit in my Platinum. And looking at the pic of the scent chamber on the box, it doesn't look the same either.

Gary

I love the look of the Guardian Platinum and it sounds great. I'll be putting it on my 'wish list' for sure. Will have to start saving my pennies so I can buy myself one for my birthday.
