Is this considered a “Connie”?

Hello guys,

I’m sorry to put this in the “Contemporary” thread but it’s a question regarding the Hoover Constellation or “Connie”as the collectors call them. Is my vacuum pictured a “Connie” Constellation?

My best friend gave me her Hoover that was a wedding gift in 1974! I don’t know much about it other than it still operates beautifully and the only thing after 44 years that she had replaced was the cord. Apparently it got damaged by accident. Anyhow, it’s in beautiful shape, sounds very smooth and has great suction!

The only thing I need to find is the round black cloth filter that clips on under the bag with a metal band. Does anyone know where I can get that filter? The black filter had almost disintegrated when I tried to clean it, so I took a Fabric HEPA bag and cut a circle to protect the motor. See pic 4 The airflow improved greatly when I took the old black filter off and replaced it. But I’d rather use what Hoover would recommend, or the collectors recommendations if my quick fix is not good. Also the attachment tools are very worn and I’d love to save them but buy new ones to use now. Anyone know where I could get a set of tools! Lastly, since I want to use this often, do they make Fabric HEPA type bags that fit this? The original Hoover paper bags are so thin.

Thank you in advance and I appreciate any and all help, advice or comments! Let me know what you think of it! Also if anyone wants more pictures, let me know.

Patrick

Yeah, that's a Connie alright! I like the colors. That's also one of the last US models, I believe 1974 was the last year they sold them here, maybe 1975. In some countries like the UK they were still being made in the early 80s.

Some people use cheese cloth or other fabrics to make filters, and there may be a few NOS filters available. But the HEPA filter you made is probably about the best solution out there. It will filter better and have better performance most likely with that.

I don't believe any HEPA bags are available. The retro Constellations used a type S HEPA bag like most 2000s Hoover canisters, but the bag mount is different. You could modify something, but the only type J bags I know of are the standard paper ones (I'm not sure if Hoover still makes them or not). I believe at one time 3M offered type J bags that were offered better filtration, but I don't know if they are still made.

As for the attachments, they can be hard to find. I'd watch thrift stores or estate sales for old ones. I think your best bet to get a full set is to look on eBay for a Deluxe Tool Set for a Hoover Convertible or a Hoover Dial A Matic, sometimes they come up and go fairly inexpensively. Of course then you'd have a set to use with your Convertible or Dial A Matic if you ever were to get one also.

Thank you Cole!!

I appreciate the reply and thank you for the information regarding the attachment tools.

I Love this vacuum as my best friend was given it as a wedding gift in 1974 and she was the one and only owner, so I know it was taken care of and is in good shape.

Thanks for the help and I’m so glad I now own a Connie! 🤗

Have a great day and thanks again!

Patrick

Enjoy it! I like the Constellations, I think they're my favorite Hoover canister. They're so quiet and the floating is fun, even if it isn't the most practical. They also seem to interest people that aren't vacuum collectors because of how unique they are.
