<span style="font-family: trebuchet ms,geneva; font-size: medium;">Very cool Mark, thanks for sharing this! Kenmore made the Commander for many years in various styles and colors including brown wrinkle-finish, dark gray hammertone, light brown, maroon and dark turquoise.</span>


 


<span style="font-family: trebuchet ms,geneva; font-size: medium;">I believe (but Kenmore expert John Lucia can verify this) that the first Commander came out in 1939 and the last one in the mid 1950s with the first Ken-Kart which originally was just a "Commander on a Cart" and ultimately refined with subsequent models. There's a hint as to the date of this version - the code "846" and "revised 846" appears on a couple of the pages, probably indicating August 1946.

Kenmore, like Hoover, loved to switch their names around and try them out on other models. I think you are right, Charles...the Commander rocket tank style started around the late 30's. Such a great vacuum! I loved all the attachments! </span>

Looks the same to me! Note the number code of 440 on the next to the last page, presumably indicates April 1940.</span>

Thank you, thank you, thank you Mark for those manual scans.

My Commander came strapped into the 'other' cart and yes, the yellow panel with pockets is original to it.
This must have been designed to fit several different cylinder diameters as it has three sets of snaps positions on the vacuum 'belt'.
The back springs that make it easy to drag up a staircase also pull tension of the stretcher tool caddy fabric keeping it pulled taut. The base has an exhaust pit that direct exhaust upward. The handle is a one piece hollow aluminum tube that bolts to the base. Obviously the hose is a replacement as is the white Kenmore floor nozzle.

Pertinent information cast into the cart base is:

That is all I know about it but I believe a picture of it appears in one of the PODs.

<span style="font-family: trebuchet ms,geneva; font-size: medium;">Æoliandave, that's a very cool cart but I think it might be a vac-shop or bojack product because (a) it's not like any other Kenmore carts I've ever seen and (b) as you note, the pockets are adaptable to fit different machine sizes. All the Commander-model Kenmore machines on carts were the same length and width so there wouldn't have been any need for adjustable pockets. Here are a couple of illustrations.</span>

A Kenmore Universal Eureka Moment

Love the xploded parts diagrams, Charles. Interesting that the Ken Kart lets the exhaust blast the floor and surrounding area.

I never meant to suggest that my Car-Eee-Vac cart was a Kenmore accessory. But I knew I had a picture of it somewhere and here it is.

It's an accessory that appears in a Universal advert within the Owners Manual for the Universal E-65 Thread #6222 that Crevicetool posted in 2009. See Link, if only to see how funny we used to be. [this post was last edited: 4/13/2011-07:06]

It's an exact match. Closeup of what Universal was calling the Roll-A-Vac available separately .
The adjust-ability I refer to is the wide three position strap that belts virtually any cylinder to the cart.
I don't dare risk asking Rick to scan it again.

Rats, now I'm going to have to get my first Universal Tank to strap into it...and after all, my Commander Bomb does have perfectly acceptable landing gear...er...wheels.

Tool Caddy for Original Post

I believe this is the tool caddy for the original post. It is some kind of fiber board I think, and a bit warped. Has a cloth carry strap. And diagonal tubes for some of the attachments.

Short Set of Attachments

The pieces that are there are in decent condition but it is missing some obviously. A nice fiber crevice tool, and an interesting bottle of scent.
