How to check/replace carbon brush on Hoover Senior?

I am bravely looking inside my 6525E; I've cleaned
out the obvious fluff, and wish to check the carbon
brushes. I know what they look like; black rectangles
on the end of a spring.

Everybody seems to find this so simple that
I can't find any instructions!!

The cable seems to have some kind of "double" tab end
on it, and the brush spring some kind of "prong".

I'm sure it all comes apart beautifully,
but I'm loathe to pull anything HARD
just in case the wrong thing "gives".

So - I've attached a picture of my brush wiring - how do I proceed?

The tag attached to the wire has a protruding piece of metal which stops it leaving the brush holder. You need to carefully press that metal piece back into the tag so as to remove the tag from the holder.

Does anyone know why the spade/tag appears to be in two parts, with a slide-on
sleeve (coloured a tasteful purple in this photo)?

Well other than what I said already, for which you are most welcome, I thought the spade was in one piece. I have no memory of a sleeve, though it would only have served as electrical insulation.

ahah! Looking again, it's not a sleeve, it's the sides (wings?) of a single piece, folded towards the centre to make a double thickness.

As before, you are welcome. I confess I had never seen a tab this colour until now and I am inclined to suggest that someone who stripped the cleaner prior to your ownership of it has coloured in on of the tabs in order to ensure that the correct tab was attached to the correct holder. The length of the wire on each tab is such that it is long enough to attach them to the opposite sides, which causes the motor to run the wrong way (and the pulley unscrews & falls of in the process).

I edited the picture, to show (what I wrongly thought) was the "sleeve".

I normally colour in one tag with a marker, then take a picture to ensure the wires go back correctly. This is after killing a turbopower 2 doing the same!
