...and Kyle popped back.

Yo, Mr. K, remember you were going to give us more pics after your dad's massage?
...and tell us who your appraiser/collector was?

...and are you saying he gave you that $180+ number "sight unseen" (as they say in the bizz)?

In the letters of Kyle, OMG!

...it just came to me. All these posts and we missed it. Go back and look at the "cooperation" going on in the posts between Fred N and Kyle. No. It can't be. ...or can it. Kyle, you slick devil you, was it Fred that gave you that $180+ number? It kind of fits in with his "tongue-in-cheek" proffer above. I love it!!!

You should be proud that I liken you to an Imperial officer from starwars ;p ruthless, decorated...english accented ;p

Now Mark

As hard as you worked to get an estimate out of me, would you think that I would so carelessly throw out such a specific number?

Fred

And yes, I was jesting, but for the right person, $500 is not out of the question, I would put a very low probability of getting it.

no it was not Fred who gave me the estimate!

It is another collector and they said not to reval so i will not betray!

Secret Estimator

So, how does your mystery estimator explain the fact that the only published statement of the value of the C-4 is between about $30 and $50 - and the club big guns say it is not possible to render an opinion. How does he/she (I belive you said 'they') explain that? Huh? Have you asked him/her/they how he/she/them can be so far off? At least you can give us that?

Remember never to tell Kyle any secrets LOL He caved in less time than it would take Helen & Ida to down a bottle of Scotch together.

Okay, it wasn't Fred

All right, Fred, it wasn't you. You are saying maybe $500 for Mr. Right, but low probability. That makes the mystery estimator's number interesting. How would you size up the mystery estimator? Recall, Kyle said that "they" said $180+. That means $180 is "their" low number. $500 is your high number. So, are "they" just goofy to say at least $180 - or is that the range, $180 to $500? Or was that shadowy figure just giving Kyle false hope. Or setting him up?
Another possibility is the mystery person(s) was so confident about the $180 that Kyle was counseled to hold out for at least that number. Is that reasonable? That is, if Kyle holds out he can expect that number "in a reasonable period of time."? I have to limit it to a reasonable period of time otherwise we are just talkin' silly and not really trying to determine value.

A ha!!!

I may have spelled that wrong. Maybe uh ha - that doesn't look right. Aha! Well anyway. Reggie, huh. Excellent.

Okay, we have a team consisting of one who peeks out of Aunt Tillie's skirt on one side and one who peeks out on the other.
Reggie and Fred have teamed up to place the range between $180 and $500.

There ya go, Kyle. Glad to be of service.

Note to Dream Team

Your numbers are probably low. But y'all are not all that excited about Compacts. I still want you guys (and Posh) in a survival situation (unless it is to value Compacts, then....then I gotta think).
But, we have to concede that Reggie knows pigs. I mean, his tag is Compact9. We also have to concede that Fred knows values - he just uses Aunt Tillie to ride point. Not my style, but it is an approach. So, the value seems to have gone up.
Okay, don't look. Guess. What did I, a warrior who doesn't know Kiwi from Shinola, estimate the value to be? Did I sweeten Reggie's a little and am I keeping Fred a little more realistic?

See post 16561. Disclaimer: I am not qualified and an IRS would probably not like my numbers.

in Reggie's defense, he had not SEEN the machine in question before he gave his estimate.

one is tempted to give an estimate of value in eBay dollars, but remember, to GET those eBay dollars those pics better SHOW a like new, complete machine with everything. the pic ive seen here is NOT ebay ready.

Brett has a point

Recall that in the very first post, Kyle claimed that he had EVERYTHING. We can presume that he told Reggie that. Recall further that my format for valuation responses includes the words "based on his description":

"I _____________ think the fair market value of Kyle's Compact, based on his description and the pic, is worth between __________ and _____________. Disclaimer: This "educated guess" is based on my limited experience with a very small and specialized market and should be used for discussion purposes only. You are cautioned that prices may vary incredibly."

That qualification to the estimate form is necessary because Kyle has promised, but Kyle has not delivered vis-a-vis pics and inventory. So, we work around it for this valuation exercise.

Also, (and this is more the Aunt Tillie approach) if there were a buyer who had some correct vintage tools and Kyle's package filled it in, value may be higher for that person. But, we are probably not talking about fair market value in that case, we are talking about someone who can justify paying more than market value because of the result at the other end.

I once sold a train made from a Lux XXX and three toasters for $750 (but that was in 1990 and my exposure was to a very small market). The value of a unit to me has nothing to do with its fair market value.

i said in an earlier post that i will not take anymore pics! i have the stuff you can believe me or not i really do give a crap. this thread has gone way out of my intensions!
