Worried

Mark: I'm seriously starting to worry about you.

Personally, I've been enjoying the Cohiba Black Pequenos.

Ian

Twin fan's were not necessarily crap, they were very good performers, and actually moved more air than the upright machines from their competitors Hoover and Eureka.
The metal-base models are very well made, what killed them was the narrow ductwork behind the fans, and the motor cooling fan that inhaled stuff off the floor into the motor.
They also had good tool suction, but attachments were rare. Singer had a set available for their uprights, but they would rather sell you a canister instead. Sears sold TONS of the twin fans, which for them were all plastic machines by the middle 70's. The last of the metal Singer models was the commercial model, made up til about 1981.
Rare birds today, I am lucky to have the ones that I do!

You saw it here.

See that, Ian? Didn't I tell you that these guys would weasel out of telling us what they think a machine is worth. They squirm around every which way. Did anyone say, "Golly, Kyle, I think your man's $180+ value is a bit optimistic."? Nope. Did they say, "Kyle, Mark's $265 is ludicrous and about what you could expect to hear from a, uh, from a, well, whatever he is. Your guy's $180 is spot on."? Nope. Instead you heard some lame homilies about valuation and then they disingenously changed the subject to ducts and fans. Oh well, we tried.

Er, uh, the pictures

...and, did you look at the calendar? It is tomorrow, yet again. ....and no pics of Kyle's pig. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Surely Leno could loan him a camera.

I'm not weaseling out.. it's worth about $30 tops to me. I have seldom paid more than $20 for any vac. I paid $24.99 for a mint near new Rainbow SE at Value Village, complete. Less than $20 for the mintiest of mint early 60's Watermatic complete at a Mennonite Thrift shop, you can view it on Doug Smiths website, I gave it to him. The only one I paid more than $30 for was the Kirby Dual 80 because the customer couldn't pay the vac shop owner for the repair and they had given me a Eureka and other odds and sods free whenever I dropped in.

Here you go. gee...sorry to make your impaient Mark.
I have the case just not in the house it is in our shed and i need my dad's help so just know i DO have it! i have another attachment for the sprayer too. I know i have the barefloor brush too. So let me find it!

by the way drop the Leno jokes those ARE NOT funny and are rather inapproate and very uneeded. You emailed Mark saying you are keeping this light. You told me to keep it light so you no what you need to also. Yes you can tell people get under my skin easily but oh well...a trait i got form my mom.

S'cuse MOI???? Weasel???

Mark you are really not being fair in this, first we have NO PICTURES, and I am really serious when I say its only worth what someone wants to pay for it.
For me, I have no interest in Compacts, so I would not offer $10 for it.
For the lovely Ms. Tania, she adores Compacts, she might be willing to break the bank for it.
Its all about demand.

I am astounded at what some individuals are paying for stuff on ebay, that just fuels the fire and lets people think that Aunt Tillie's old vacuum, whatever it may be, is worth a mint. That will only lead to more old crap being listed on Ebay, when it may be better off out on the curb!

And the value drops.

Pretty machine... it does look to be in nice shape... but...

The hose isn't original.
No crevice tool.
No Rug Nozzle.
The Turbinette would have come with a much later model, not this particular one.

Not sure that the color is original, either. I'm not a Compact expert.. but it very well could have been repainted at some point in time. Dealers used to do that quite frequently.

Sandbaggin'

Pete, Jeff - you are still sandbagging. The question on the floor is, based on your experience, what is your educated guess as to the value of the machine? The question was not what you would offer for it. Obviously, if you don't like Compacts, or if you have a policy of not paying over $20 for a machine, then your personal transactions are hardly helpful in answering the question. Yet, at the same time, you have knowledge that your $10 bid would come up short - so you know that is not the value. That is what I mean about the avoidance issue.
I would never in a million years have paid $230,000 for the bakery building across the street, but I sure as heck am going to take that transaction into consideration if I ever sell my building, or if someone asks me what these buildings are worth. How could I not?
But, let's say we finally have a couple of numbers. Jeff says the value is some less than $10. While I don't believe for a minute that is his opinion of the value, that is as close as he would come to telling us what he thought was the value.
Pete tries harder to answer the question and says $30, tops. In fairness, that was before the picture.
Kyle, do you think they are still sandbagging? While you think I am just hassling you, I actually think you have a ligitimate credential, with your machines, your experience, your talking to people, to render an opinion. Not only that, I suspect that you would give an honest answer even though you want to sell it. But, because you do want to sell it, I won't bug you for your opinion of the value.
Okay, experienced club members, does anyone else have an opinion of the value of Kyle's Compact?

Maybe this "form" will make it easier.

"I ________________ think the fair market value of Kyle's Compact, based on his description and the pic, is worth between __________ and _____________. Disclaimer: This "educated guess" is based on my limited experience with a very small and specialized market and should be used for discussion purposes only. You are cautioned that prices may vary incredibly."

P.S. Kyle, you taught me an important lesson today that I assure you I won't forget. That lesson is never trust that people you don't know well will be discreet about off thread communications.

i have the original hose
i have the crevice tool
i hvae the rug nozzle!

they are all in the toy box thing. I just don't hvae the time tonight to take a pic of that because my dad went to get a massage....so just know i do have them!!!!

So in that case: Value back up!

Mark, i think the vacuum pros here have a point. i suspect the folks here are NOT gonna jump at the chance to volunteer an estimated price for someone that cant even get their pictures right!

Kyle, i know you mean well, but asking for estimates (like an adult, making a mature transaction) requires some effort on your part. im sure if your approach was a little more thought out, many people would love to discuss your new Compact and ,perhaps, its market value.

Kyle's okay

Hey, Kyle may be young, but he has a lot of experience in this specialty. My "form"/format contains the hedge "based on his description". Kyle's doin' okay with what he is working with. What's your number Brett?

Massage

My dad went to get a massage. I like that. I might use that. Oops, too late. Anyway, "Value Back Up" is a litte premature. A lot of the guys are from Missouri (remember all that stink awhile back)and need to see it.
But, because of the handy-dandy hedge in my disclaimer language there is absolutely nothing preventing the experienced members from tossing a couple of numbers -- but, all is quiet. Hmmmmmmmmm. You don't think there is a conspiracy out there? An oath signed during a late night secret meeting? Why or why can't we get a simple "educated guess." Almost comical. Next thing the thread will be boycotted.
(These guys are going to kill me in September. I better come up with a disguise - or schedule a vacation and have my secretary serve the finger food.)

Aw dizamn, Mark even has a secretary :P I want an office..a secretary..a business :P talk about the friggin Ian Mooreian dream =p

(this threads clearly gone off the rails so I may as well help it along..)

dizamn

Hey, Clockwork Orange is back! Ian, what's your number?

Use the form:

"I Ian the Brit think the fair market value of Kyle's Compact, based on his description and the pic, is worth between __________ and _____________. Disclaimer: This "educated guess" is based on my limited experience with a very small and specialized market and should be used for discussion purposes only. You are cautioned that prices may vary incredibly."

Well Mark I don't know what you want someone to say, that it's worth $150 , $100, $80 which it probably isn't. Even Freds as pristine and pampered as it is would be a hard sell in the local newspaper more than likely if a reader say it listed for those figures, they'll go to Walmart. You might see Freds in a Vac shop for $150 or even $200 but when people are buying privately they aren't going to pay that kind of money for a second hand vac. The thrift stores and such have them a dime a dozen all the time if anyones looking for a decent 2nd vacuum.Tat's where I get all mine mostly and probably most of the collectors. That's why the value to me is like I said probably around $30 tops. Ebay just skews things because that's not the real world imho.
