Brett - how about: "To downplay or misrepresent one's ability in a game or activity in order to deceive" -
...the only qualifier I might make in this context is that I am not accusing y'all of deceiving, just downplaying your knowlege (smile)

..and while I am on a roll

..but I need to blow this popstand shortly..
Brett, I didn't take what Kyle (or anyone posting) said as a seller setting a price according to a buyer's estimate. A buyer's estimate is just data - kind a like smorgasboard, some stuff you bite on and some you pass
But, that does happen. For example, suppose I have a room full of rare books that I need to move and don't have the time and resources to move them on ebay or something (and don't want to pay the commissions). I might invite a couple of reputable booksellers (and maybe a third working for me) to enjoy some libation and finger food while they scan the collection. I might give them a heads up that they should be sure they have their money lined up and then I indicate I need to move the lot and need a fair price - then and there. I will probably net as good as if I did a whole bunch of fiddle farting around trying to get a more public sale together. At the end of the day, the result should be that I get a fair price and the bookseller gets something at a price that he/she can turn around and make a profit. You don't spend $2 to make $1.

so in that case anyone interested? Make an offer or make a trade offer! I really strongly dislike compacts! STRONGLY <br
anyone wanna trade something? I am HUGE into kenmores! Twin fans to be excact and i REALLY wanna Duo-power! ANyone willing for either one of those

OK - I'll Take a Crack At This

Not giving an estimated value, but my opinion on why it is hard to give an estimate of what any particular vacuum cleaner is worth. Rocket - you use the example of estate items or rare books. There is a much deeper market for rare books given the fact that there are dealers around and have been for some time. I have some experience in valuation, being a CPA and also having served as a trustee for a rather large estate. Most of the items could be valued by jewelers or art dealers or real estate appraisers. Businesses can be valued by multiple methods including discounted cash flow analysis which is recognized by the IRS. An old vacuum at an estate sale may be valued by estate sales people at $10. Many here have done very well buying an old cleaner at an estate sale for $10 and selling it for hundreds. Did the educated estimate by the "experts" give the right value <br
The problem with old vacuum cleaners is that there are probably only a few hundred of us collectors out there, but other people as well that buy for emotional reasons. It's a real crap shoot to put an old cleaner on ebay and have just the right people looking at it in the short window it is available to buy. We can all tell the story of the GE swivel top that went for $800 because the lady had to have the machine that her mother had. Weeks later a similar machine went for $25. There is no rhyme or reason to it. So as an experienced collector, I wouldn't even venture a guess as to what a particular machine would bring and as you say, we are probably the best source of information. I wouldn't say $250 when, in fact, if Kyle put the machine on Ebay and hit his timing exactly right, could have received much more. Don't blame or provoke us for that. I came across a brand-new Hoover Floor Washer in the box and listed it on Ebay for a lady. Now I would have paid hundreds for it (she gave me one outright) and after a week on Ebay and discussion on this forum, it brought $70. So there you go. I would have estimated $300 and would have been way off <br
As to discussing Ebay listings or pricing, that discussion is welcome here. There are strong opinions on both sides, but the general consensus is that that is fair game as far as discussion here. I welcome your comments <br

Sandbaggers v. Junior Slicker

Kyle, you are not sharing. You have an estimate and you are not sharing. This isn't ebay. This is a collector's club. You said you had an estimate, so share, pal. What was it? Who gave you the estimate? You started this and I carried your water for awhile. Now it's back to you.

There was once a Hoover Freedom (80s model, probably rarer actually) with all the box, tools and manual..went for £100 something..of course, that was because of one particular collector who enjoyed splashing out shall we say. <br
Ian

Ok I am willing to part with it for $100-$150 or YOUR call on a fair trade <br
I will not say what collector gave me the estimate but i will say he told me $180+ So i am willing to part anywhere between $100-$150. So there you go!

Yikes, Mr. Nelson

I agree with everything you said and defer mucho to your experience but still think you are sandbagging. Your suggestions that the market is small and that anomalous things happen don't prevent you from having an opinion of the value of a cleaner. Such things are factors. You could say something like, "Kyle, your machine should go for $250 but ebay is wiggy and you could get a wuppin'. Or, Kyle, you could see it gather dust on a shelf long enough that a TVM calculation would make that $70 in your pocket today look pretty good."
I say that if the buyers and sellers in the world decided that coming at value was as impossible as y'all are suggesting, commerce would come to a screeching halt and we would probably all fly off into space
Fred, you can do it. Really, you can tell us what you think Kyle's pig is worth. I know you can do it. You are an expert in this field. We look up to you. I know ya got it in ya
Okay guys, isn't that right? Do you agree with me that Fred Nelson is smart enough, and experienced enough, to render an "educated guess" as to the value of Kyles pile of aluminuminumenum??? Huh?

Mark is slipping into gentle insanity much like I have I see ; <br
But then, Genius is very close to insanity ;]

Mark

I would be willing tell you what I would be willing to pay, but not enough of these brand-new pigs have sold to tell me what someone else would pay. Also, thank God, I am in a financial situation that allows me to indulge my desires more than most (and I have taken a lot of heat for that in this group.) For me to give an estimate for that I would have to see a picture.

well its all moot now anyway. Fred, Mark...its all "come out". somebody give the kid a Kenmore twin-fan...

Of Course

Now we are getting down to "brass tacks." The true value of any item is "What a willing seller is willing to accept from a willing buyer." Estimating that is the art. I can give a number, but is Kyle willing to accept it?

Okay, now the pics

Okay, Kyle, I will respect (at least for now), your decision to keep your appraiser some kind of State secret, but, where are the pictures? Scroll up and see the lame excuse you made for a tease without pics. Fred needs the pics. I need the pics. Ian, that crazy Brit (smile), needs the pics. Brett needs the pics. Where are the pics? This is the 21st century, Kyle, everyone has pics. Your credibility is is half way down the bannister and sliding fast. The pics, my man, the pics
Look, Kyle, if we don't get pics, Fred will continue to have an excuse for sandbaggin. Intolerable. Intolerable.

Don't you dare!

Don't do it, Mr. Nelson. Don't call that slicker off thread and talk secret stuff. We're trying to get at the truth here. We're trying to share. To communicate. Don't let him diss us. (Did I dpell diss right?) This is important. This could be critical
Right, Ian?
