How many Canisters offer a 12' hose?

While I was online shopping for a new Rainbow dust brush; I found 12' hoses for Rainbow D4, SE and for the E series. I'm curious as to a few things~

Is this becoming popular with other canister vacuums?

Is this making difficulty in dragging the canister along?

After dealing with the sometimes awkwardness of long hoses on central vacs and witnessing a client of mine give a sharp yank on her central vac hose causing furniture breaking in the path, I'm curious.

I sure hope it doesn't become standard on most canisters... That would be highly annoying to struggle with while vacuuming and trying to find a place to store it. I wouldn't ever want one that long, everything in my house would be broken, lol. It might be nice as an extra, but I'd rather have a long reach wand with a jointed/flexible tip for high reach jobs.

Reduced performance

Typically the longer the hose the more airflow you lose in it of course this can be fixed by using a larger diameter hose with a smoother interior

I just use them when cleaning the high spaces. I bought them for my Sebo, Miele, and Rainbow. They are great for those areas. I did use the Rainbow once with the 12 ft hose just to vacuum the floors. The 8ft is just fine for this and I don't feel it necessary to get the 12 ft hose out.


 


One other use I bought the 12 foot hose for was the garage floor. I am going to use the Rainjet like another forum member does to clean up the garage floor after all the winter tracking in of snow and salt etc. Hopefully it will be long enough not to have to drag the Rainbow clear across the floor and can stay in one place.

Yeah If you have a too long hose then you will lose control of steering the canister!

I like long hoses.... Never seems to affect my ability to pull the canister in the right direction...

The way to hold the hose comfortably as you clean was always shown on the front of the instruction manual for those 1950's Lewyt tank vacs: if you are right handed, the handle is held in your right hand with the hose around your back at waist level. Your left hand holds onto a stretch of hose coming from your back towards the canister, controlling the movement of the main suction unit!

I like longer hoses, too and perhaps my favorite is the ones that came with a yellow, burgundy or blue Royal Pony Power Tank. The power hose has crush-proof flexibility and without measuring I would say it is at least 10 feet long.


I also have a very early Filterqueen with a 10 foot saran braided brown hose.

It all aids in not having to jerk the vacuum around for those extra long reaches.
Short hoses are a penny-pinching bean-counting accountant's decision.

I Love Longer Hoses

You just have to have the right machine hooked up to it!  I have a 10' hose for my Princess (Filter Queen) and the 12' hoses for my Rainbow.  But the best is a 30' hose on my central vac.  Best for heads down vacuuming.

Yup. I have three Roll Easy models. One with a brilliant turquoise vinyl replacement from a Dog Grooming Clipper at 10 feet, the next with an 8 foot cotton braided GE hose in blue/gray, and the third I outfitted with a pale blue pool hose at +40 feet. I set the Roll-Easy on a side wheel and can vacuum an entire half main floor or attic bedroom Lounge area with it. My Roll Easy swivel vac with central vac reach. Perfect for outside car grooming in summer. Wearing my Turquoise canvas running shoes, of course.

Losing control of the canister because of a long hose?

I wouldn't say I've ever come across this problem; 12feet equates to around 3.5metres. Thus the largest amount of hose I've used is a 2 metre extension hose on a Henry vacuum cleaner which has the 2.5 metre hose as standard. Or a SEBO K1 Komfort at 2.1 metres with the extra SEBO extension hose at 3 metres tagged on. Both use for cleaning narrow and three flights of steps. Generally when you have that much hose to clean with, one hand goes onto the handle of the vacuum and the other can grab excess hose to ensure that:

1) The body of the vacuum cleaner stays close, but not close enough to bump into legs, feet etc.

2) More control of pulling the machine towards you rather than allow it to crab into the sides of rooms, walls or hall ways.

3) A longer hose ensures less weight pulled on the machine body itself.

When it comes to storing, I find storing the hose on the Henry awkward, but simply this is because there are no park points for the hose, suction tubes and floor head to get onto, unless of course you have the very latest model that now supports a rear central park slider.

With the SEBO machines, I find it easier to park the long 2.1 metre hoses because both the smaller bagged K series and the D2 have central park points. I really wish my Miele S6 was as compact as storing up. The decision in the UK to not allow the handle to have its independent slide in storer partition is a bit of a pity. As you can see, the S6 model shown here has a slide in bit at the back of the handle, making more use of the body on offer for compacting up the standard 1.8 metre hose.

Also in time I think brands will offer a hose that can either compact up into itself only requiring to be used for extra stretch or just general use, rather than just fitting an extra long hose onto the machine. AS others have noted, unless a hose has a wider diameter and smooth internals, the amount of airflow can suffer. But it also has to do with the airflow and sealed suction that the machine has to offer in the first place - one of the reasons to why both the Numatic and SEBO vacs have justifiable long hoses not just from a lighter-weight-to lift point of view than relying on the machine itself.

My new Sebo

has a specially designed hose that uses the Venturi effect in order to increase airflow. Basically it's a hose that is wider at the base unit than it is at the head. In theory it makes a ton of sense. I don't see the need to add a longer hose extension, nor would I based on it's design.

I could only see the benefits for stairs and such. When I worked for Sunglass Hut, I had to clean the tops of the cases and cabinets from all the dirt due to the mall being remodeled. I only had my Electrolux 1205 (pre collecting) so I had the carry it up the ladder and balance myself above huge glass cabinets. The idea of a longer hose would have been great at that time.

I also use an extension hose for getting around larger cars, leaving the machine in one place and just taking whatever tool I need with me, if extra is required. Far easier just to rely on stretching out a hose rather than physically moving with the vacuum all the time.

Having had the SEBO D2 for more than a year now, I'd say the bigger diameter hose at the base by the body join is also very effective on not clogging up. This is more apparent when dealing with copious amounts of pet hair and similar textures.

3 mtr hose

i used to have an old goblin wet and dry that had a 3 mtr hose i used to find it so much easier to clear up after the builders with it as i kept the main unit out of the way and there was no brick dust flying about, i also used this my main vacuum many years ago when i first left home, i sed to leave the machine in the middle of the lounge or bedroom and i could clean with out having to move the vacuum around i like longer hoses
