Yes, removing the base from the rest of the cleaner is a pain in the ass (and it would almost seem as if designers at Hoover wanted it that way) but it's the only way to access the motor. Having just taken apart my 1136, I remember how much firsthand. There are two pop rivets on the bottom housing which raise the roller brush for when you are using attachments. They are a bit of an obstacle. Also, make sure you remove the spring for the handle release lever. You may want to use some Armorall as a lubricant so you don't scratch the rear motor housing while removing the base. You will need to access the motor area to remove 3 more screws which hold the front cover onto the machine. Originally, there was a piece of black foam where clean air exhausts out the front cover, but on most DAM's I've seen they disintegrated years ago. Hope this helps.
