Hoover Special 102 After Restoration + 1920 Residential Model Line Images

It's not exactly the way I'd like it yet, but its presentable. Its shown below next to the Baby Model 103 for comparison. You can also see the original 1920 bag on the Baby model compared to the slightly newer 541 / 105 style bag on my 102. Both bags are rare but only the darker one is original to the exact machine. It should be pointed out that the light colored bag has both mounts for the central strap or the bag spreader. Even though the 105 / 541 bag is incorrect it looks far more original than a later black bag or an after market one.

Does the 102 run ok now? I'd love to see a video of either of them in action!

We didn't have either of those machines over here, our first Hoover was Special Model 105 in 1919.

I'd like to import some older Hoovers eventually. The seller of that 102 wouldn't ship it internationally, so I didn't bid, and I was recently outbid on an all-original Baby 103.

BTW, I haven't forgotten about your email about the 725 handle - I'll get back to you ASAP. I've been so busy getting things ready for the Hoover programme I did, and I've also been busy with work, so I've got really behind. I have loads of emails from all the people I correspond with to catch up on!

yeah...it's from a 1919 ad I bought on eBay. The cherub has a rather terrifying charm to it, though. I wonder if the artist used the face of someone - baby or adult - who he or she really knew. They were a bit modest when they drew on the wings!

Note the text is cleverly written throughout using vacuum cleaning metaphores!

The motor on the 102 runs and it cleans well, but it seems to have some bearing trouble. I suspect it is worse than your typical dry bearing issues. It ran slowly and with a rattle at first and then after oiling the lower bearing behind the fan, it ran faster but the rattling never went away. As of right now it only rattles when the brush roll is hooked up, or when it is just turned on regardless of brushroll. When the belt is off it smooths out at full speed.

I'm thinking that the bearing might be worn too much and it has enough clearance to vibrate.

By the way, could you give me the link to the Hoover 103 you were outbid on. I find it interesting how often this "rare" model turns up. That would be the 5th or 6th (?) Baby model on ebay that I have seen. That figure would include both the Model C and 103. I mean, it is rarer than a 102 or 105 but you could certainly get your hands on one if you wait a little while.

Unfortunately, the Baby 103 I was outbid on was listed sometime early last month, and I've long-since deleted the link from my watch list. It had an original bag, and was listed as 'not working' - I was looking forward to having a chance to repair it. Sadly for me, it went to a frequent big eBay winner/spender at the last second, so I guess I'll have to wait a little longer for one

They have come up quite frequently; my friend Stephen in this country has 2, a Model C and a 103. Unfortunately, the 103's handle bale was snapped in transit.

Yeah, I can see how you can get outbid on that kind of thing. I saw a broken Model C once that went for $180 to another big spender if I remember correctly. That was a few years ago. Considering the simplicity of the design, repair of one should be quite easy.

The only reason I got my Baby model is because it was burried in a vacuum lot and I was good at negotiating for it.

Too bad about your friends 103. I'd assume the C parts work on the 103 so he should be able to use both. The seller must have packed it very poorly to break a piece of metal that thick. Anyway, its a simple piece and he could probably have it replaced it he knew someone with a metal shop.
