Hoover Senso...

Hi, I was donated this Hoover Sensotronic S3134.
I've not had time to look at it properly yet.
It needs a bit of a clean and polish. I'm sure it will look fine once it's finished.
I was suprised at how long the neck is on the straight suction head is)

What a beauty! This must be from the first series of Sensontronic's as I'm sure the later electronic models came with a black hose and a chrome extension wands? If it is, it's certainly a rare bird.

Hi Chris, I think it is from the 1st series of Hoover Sensotronics.
Well I thought I'd rescue it as it would of been going to the tip if I didn't want it. Had to travel to collect it.
I was given a Siemens vac as well which I didn't want as I already have one but I took that as well so I could give it to another young collector who said he would be interested in it)

I would like to suggest that the long neck was to compensate for the shorter hose handle, as all other Sensortronic cleaners with none-power hoses had a regular sized neck on the floor tool and a long hose handle. On later cleaners across all ranges where the hose terminated into a looped handle shaped like an iron, the extension tubes were longer than those supplied on cleaners which had the regular long hose handle. Then again, I tell you this, but I must also say that some if not all Powerglide cleaners had a long necked floor tool, despite having a long hose handle too. That was the only other model I can think of which did have such, though.

Great Hoover to add to the collection, love the Sensotronics looks Ike a System 3 or the TOL System 5 from the first series.... The hose was a beast....LOL

so have you used the senso yet? i've always een intrigued to know what they're like to use. it it quiet? for some reason i imagined it to be quite quiet!

The Sensotronics are pretty quiet, with strong suction. They're also probably one of the heaviest domestic cylinders ever made, weighing in at 10kg.

As well as being heavy to lift, the long and wide design as well as the weight was such that the cleaner was also very hard to pull around. It would not have been so bad had the cleaner had a swivel top hose, or at the least a hose which was fitted high up, like on a Philips. But as it was, the low hose point made it even harder to pull.

Hoover Powerglide cylinder

I had a "Powerglide", model S4256, in red with black tools and hose. It had the conventional short-necked floor head, standard length extension tubes and standard hose hand-grip.

Hello Rolls. The model I had in mind was beige with brown tools, with a brown floor tool and long neck. It was brought into my shop for repair. Very well looked after and still in the original box. I am wondering if the colour of the tool kit was a factor in the choice of floor tool provided? I would not be at all surprised if Hoover were in the process of exhausting stock of the brown tools as it would have been around the time of the Powerglide cleaner that both brown and beige & brown trim tool kits were discontinued in favour of plain black. Do you know if the beige Powerglide cleaner was an earlier model or did it run alongside of the red version as a colour choice?

Just finished cleaning this 1982 Sensotronic System 1 up for Ric Gooch. Although its the most basic one, its by far my favourite. That blood red colour is incredible. Will do a vid of it tomorrow

My sister had a System 3 that she bought second hand, complete with power head, in her uni house. She also had a Delonghi Combi 800 that came with that house. The senso got left in an outside toilet when she moved out. I never did forgive her.

We had the Hoover Sensotronic System 2, but with cream tools. The hose handgrip was identical to the Powerglide, Turbopower, and Junior types of hose handgrip. Two standard length cream extension tubes, and a short-necked Hoover Contour floor nozzle.

The Sensotronic black tool set I always associated with the second generation machines (System 10, 20, 25, etc).

The beige Powerglide seemed to be a later variant. I'm sure that the red one came first.

Hello Rolls. The black tool kit was for the 2nd generation as I remember it. The darker set on the first cleaners was dark brown, though in that brochure there it does of course look black. Because Hoover discontinued the beige and the brown tool kits to make way for black, I thought the beige Powerglide with brown tools may have been the first version, though of course both cleaners in the Powerglide range were very short lived and were built on the cusp of many changes Hoover were making, so I agree with you that the red model could have been first.

Although I am certain the long-necked floor tool was designed for those cleaners with the remote control cleaners with very short hose handles, it does seem that Hoover supplied it with other long handled cleaners too, based on my memory of the Powerglide I saw, and the booklet above, and the cleaner ryry owns. Knowing Hoover, they probably did this to use up stock of existing parts in an existing colour.
