I was doing some tidying-up in the kitchen today. We had a small bowl of sauce & condiment packets on the counter from various take-out restaurants -- soy sauce, hot mustard, honey, etc. Or what I thought was honey. I happened to look at the label more closely and saw that it reads "HONEY sauce" -- "honey" in bold blockface type and "sauce" in tiny, barely legible cursive type. Hmmmmm, I wondered... What is this "honey sauce?" I read the label:

Ingredients: Honey, corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup, sugar, natural flavor, fructose, caramel color."

Seriously? Can it REALLY be more economical to make up this toxic cocktail than to just provide plain honey?

I know that most "maple syrups" are made of corn syrup and sugar with a dollop of maple syrup -- or, more likely, "artificial maple flavor." But I had no idea that something as simple and pure as honey was also being adulterated in this manner.

I threw the entire lot in the trash with disgust.

Tell you a secret...

If you can, buy honey locally or be sure, it has not been altered, believe it or not they are screwing with honey and molasses!!!I think they are pasteurizing it or some such..

You're right, Hans. Commercially prepared honey is pasteurized. And God Only Knows what else. You have to make sure to look for RAW HONEY on the label. I can't eat too much of it anymore. When I do buy it, I get it from local roadside stands where it goes right from hive to jar.

Yummy, Sounds like one super duper fine suicide dish you got there, or more like Sabaton's " Aces in Exile! " My tummy feels bloated with toxic waste already...bon appetite!!!

I love raw honey, but I can't eat it the way I used to, since I became diabetic. Now, I mainly take a spoonful of it medicinally when I have a low blood sugar episode. It's very good for that since it's almost pure glucose. But I used to love me some peanut butter (crunchy), raisin and honey sandwiches on Roman Meal bread. Mmmm, Mmmm, Mmmm!!!

I first encountered that disgusting "honey sauce" about 20 or so years ago at KFC. They had it on the condiment bar for unwitting patrons to put on the biscuits. At the time I thought it was weird and kind of gross that they would adulterate honey like that but I didn't really understand just how bad it was.

These days, I try to avoid high fructose corn syrup like the plague it is. That crap actually increases the body's resistance to its own insulin (much more so than other refined sugars), thus aggravating--and arguably helping to cause--type 2 diabetes, which I have.

I don't drink sugared soft drinks at all anymore, but I've heard that in some parts of the country during March and April, Coca-Cola quietly offers limited quantities of kosher Coke for observant Jews to have during Passover. It can be distinguished from regular Coke by the ingredient list (no high fructose corn syrup) and by a yellow twist-off cap in place of the standard red one.
