Help, Vacuum advice wanted

Hi,
Not sure if this is place to post- seems like this is a collector site. I am looking for excellent vacuum that will make my cleaning experience and results better. I'm comfortable with a $600- 1000 price range, but would spend more if the quality durability and maintaince of the machine would justify the cost. I've been considering the Sebo D4.

Some considerations:

I live in a house 100+ years (dust is an issue)
My house is only about 1800 sf but I have 4 sets of stairs in my house (3 floors including attic)
I have two beautiful labs (double coats- two distinct types of fur )
Mostly hard wood with large very low pile area rugs
Upholstry cleaning to remove dog hair is important

For every one person who reads this post and thinks, I want to save a buck and purchase that knockoff, there will be more that will want the real German made Sebo more than before.

Well if it's a canister you seek

The D4 sounds like a good option i haven't had the chance to try one though.

The riccar/simplicity line should probably be considered as well they are some pretty nice vacuums. I'd stop into a local dealer for either of these brands and take a look at them you will want to purchase a different floor brush though the ones that come onboard are so little.

Miele is also a good option but they have a high cost of maintenance and parts. (example Hepa filter for my miele Silver Moon $50 hepa filter for my Riccar 1700 $32)

Perhaps even a used tristar or patriot would be an appropriate option for you.

System is a Two suction motor system. With all the airflow of a Kirby and the suction power of an Electrolux. Both motors are used for carpet cleaning, just one suction motor is used for attachment tool use. Excellent, unique design - made in the USA.

I have a Simplicity Synchrony and an Aerus Guardian Upright...I tend to like uprights better if you have lots of wall to wall carpeting and canisters if you have more hardwood floors. I've also had a Miele S2 canister which I sold earlier this year. I strongly recommend the Sebo vacuum canister or upright all around. All of these brands are good quality, but the Simplicity/Riccar, while I like it is very loud compared with the rest, and the uprights aren't low profile enough to reach under furniture, plus you have to turn a dial to use hose and wand. Inconvenient in my opinion. Miele's are expensive to maintain, but high quality.

The Sebo is quiet, easy to use, filters very well, simple to maintain, and they reach under low furniture very easily. I recommend the D4 or Felix by Sebo and they are in your price range. They offer a 10 year warranty now.

Owning over

400 high end vacuums you can't go wrong with Riccar/Simplicity vacuums also Aerus Guardian uprights . I owned and sold my Miele upright S7 Salsa way too heavy n bulky and I owned and sold my Sebo X4 and an essential G the X4 drove me nuts constantly adjusting the height it never seemed to deep clean and my essential G had manual height adjustment and I was unimpressed with the cleaning of either Sebo . I have owned my Riccar Radiance for 5 years and it deep cleans and filters very well . Plus made in the USA you can't go wrong . My entire family use Aerus exclusively and the machines hold up and clean very well and have the easiest bag change out of any vacuum period . I must have purchased over 100 for every member of my family and I never get calls to repair their vacuums .

i have all hardwood with some large area rugs so I thought a canister would be better plus with the pet fur I need good attachments. But the Brilliance upright with the two motor system sounds interesting.

Do Not Get The Riccar Brilliance (I Own One)

Your home is clearly best suited for a canister. The Brilliance is designed for the best carpet cleaning performance possible, not to clean hard floors.   Since you want to clean hard floors without the brush roll spinning, you would be relying entirely on the bypass motor, which small and weak. If you really want suction like an Electrolux, buy an Electrolux. Since you have three stories to clean, carrying up and down the Brilliance is going to get tiring quickly, and a canister will be much easier to manage. 


 


Canisters are designed for homes like yours in mind. Excellent floor tools are available on most all high-end machines, and modern power nozzles, the powered brush you would clean your area rugs with, are just as good as a decent upright. Aerus Electrolux machines are great (I use one daily), but I also hear great things about Riccar and Miele. Aerus has an excellent tool for pet hair called the Sidekick which is electrically powered, as opposed to a turbine-powered which consistently fail whenever I use one when cleaning up Siberian Husky hair. 


 


Check out the new Aerus Guardian Platinum, which I hear nothing but great things about. If you prefer an upright, an Oreck XL21 might be the thing for you, since those machines are excellent for pet hair and have a low-speed switch for cleaning hard floors. I'd really stick with a canister though.

I own and love the Aerus Guardian Platinum and own the top of line
Riccar canister and Simplicity canister .

This is your Best choice.

With dust being your issue and the combination flooring you cannot go wrong with a Miele S8 canister. I promise you you will never regret the purchase, they are amazing.

I played with Miele S8 at a vacuum shop and was just amazed, they just scream out quality and the filtration is second to none.

... the Miele's upholstery brush is turbine-driven rather than electric. I tried one out. Totally ineffective.

There are several good choices that would do a great job. The Sebo Airbelt D4 is supposedly well built, but it didn't score very well on suction testing at Vacuum Wizard and they also criticized it's floor tool for scooting dried beans instead of sucking them up and for not cleaning the edges of baseboards, it's mini-nozzle is air-driven, and it lacks a headlight. On the plus side it's filtration was excellent, it has variable settings, it cleaned well, it's power nozzle is L-shaped, and it's very quiet. The Miele is another great machine but it's tools are poor for me, it's hose is short, the power nozzle lacks rug guards and cannot be "parked" on the machine, and I believe you must buy the mini-nozzle separately (which is air-driven rather than electric). On the plus side it's extremely quiet, has variable settings, has high suction, has excellent filtration, and cleans well. Riccar makes a good canister but I believe it's hose is also shortish, it has an air-driven mini-nozzle, it's hard floor tool is smallish, and it's power nozzle is very loud based on what I've heard on Youtube. On the plus side it has metal brushrolls, is well made, and cleans well. If I were you I wouldn't overlook the Aerus Lux Guardian Platinum though to me it's biggest drawback is that Aerus took away the handle switch for the suction motor and some dislike it's wands (though they lock-on all tools, including the mini-nozzle and the power nozzle, for use on the handle and/or wands). On the plus side, it has an electric mini-nozzle, L-shaped power nozzlewith LED headlight, it's filtration is the highest available (2 HEPA filters, charcoal, multilayer bag), it's power is among the very highest, it's tools are very well made and excellent, it's auto shut-off for bag change, and it's very quiet. All of these are quality machines with reputations and are on my short-list for purchase. Good luck and examine them all before you buy!

All the above are good mentions, but since you stated that you have all hardwood, a canister will be the right choice. I would exclude the Aerus canisters, very clunky, noisy, overpriced and do not deep clean. The new Aerus platinum is an excellent quiet canister vacuum with two hepa filters, but will be $1,700+ and you will have to haggle/hassle to get a good deal. The Miele is good and I always liked them but small tools and cords. The Riccar/Simplicity canisters are not bad, but heavy for some to drag around. You can only buy these in an authorized retailer. I feel they are overpriced, but you can negotiate.

Dollar for dollar, performance, durability, ease of use, quietness, assortment of tools, hospital grade filtration- check out the SEBO! Sebo/Windsor is used by most hotels, large facilities, hospitals, etc. for years. The durability has been trust for some time. You will notice them as blue/white Windsor Sensors in hotels/hospitals. Their D4 canister is really good, very quiet and light to maneuver, it has a very long cord unlike the other brands. All for $899 and you can get an even better deal at some retailers. A friend of mine who is in the vacuum business- owns six stores in VA and sells all the brands, says this is the fastest growing high-end quality vacuum segment next to Dyson. I thought Miele was for some time.
