Have You Ever Tried Everything To Fix A Vac, Nothing Goes Right So Finally Decide It's Had It's Day?

I have felt this a few times about some of the vacuums in my collection but they did turn out ok in the end. Only this vacuum cleaner (picture Bellow) I have been to the moon and back trying to get it restored and it just keeps fighting back and doesn't want to be helped, it just wants to finally rest after 21 years of service.
I have completely reinforced the body because it was and is covered in cracks, pieces of plastic keep snapping off, the motor is very noisy and rough sounding (needs and overhaul) and the plastic is very brittle all over the machine as it is sun bleached so it has weakeded it. It just seams it doesn't want to be fixed, by looking at it it looks perfect but I assure you it has more problems than soft mick.

I think this one is going to have to go to the tip or be kept for spares for when I get another U2602 Which I really hope I will, It is one of my faveourites.

my Rainbow chrome dome started out to be a 2 hour job turned out to take the entire day to rebuild the motor. Half way through it I was thinking why the hell did I start this project??!! I would get so angry, have to walk away for a while, come back, get my finger cut deep, etc... Finally around 5:30 it was done, living room was a mess with parts all around but it was done.
I would also have to rebuild the Hoover's at the hotel I used to work for. The cleaning staff would abuse the hell out of them & I had more parts for them then I think the vacuum shop did. I finally told them it would be cheaper to buy new ones then to try & repair the old ones even though they were built better, the replacement parts were not produced to same (very cheap made but expensive).

I bought a Dial-a-Matic Powerdrive from the Goodwill in 2010, looking and sounding like it was in good shape, but I discovered otherwise once I opened it up at home. The fan blades were extremely dusty and the powerdrive was starting to fail. While attempting to take it apart, I completely broke the powerdrive, and decided just to save any parts I could and recycled the rest.

When you have a machine such as described in the original post, i.e., known bad motor, plastic is cracking all over, etc, it's best to call it a day and let it go. You can go to heroic efforts to save it and it will still be a not very good machine. Best to find a replacement in kind if it's a model that you like. Find one good, serviceable part on the machine to be discarded and transplant it onto the replacement so in your head the spirit of the old one will live on, as it were.

My second vacuum I ever got, my Dyson DC04. It was found in the scrap at my dads work. It worked but smoked, only because the belt got stuck. 1 year later, and I thought it was dead. I was on the brink of tossing it out- but I just couldn't do it! So, a new sole plate, brush roll, belt, brush housing, filters x2, wand, cyclone top, hose, spine assembly, u-bend and valve pipe later, it was running like new!

It makes me feel bad about a vacuum when it is just bodged u

with other parts, it, to me takes away it's value and originality, I would feel like I wouldn't actually have that vacuum, even though I do but mentally I would feel like I don't own it because it is not good enough to satify me, as an all original "fresh "new" machine" Hope that doesn't sound confusing!

No I know what you mean, I feel as If it is no longer the same vac, just a few parts if it left lol
