I have my Grandmother's 3rd vacuum cleaner, it is a kirby Classic that was given to her by my Grandfathers mother because she bought two of them within a few weeks. Grandma still has the Electrolux XXX she bought used from a doctors wife along with her speed queen wringer and chrome dinette set when they got their 1st house in 1961. She still has the Hoover Convertible 1020 she bought when she got a larger house in 1969. I will eventually have these one day as well.
The first vacuum I remember of my mother's was a mid 1980's Kenmore upright, I have never seen another like it and would love to find it someday.

I have 3 that were in my family too.......

I have the 1963 Hoover Convertible Special my mom got as a newlywed...I also have the 2001 Slimline she got later (both of these I rescued form our summer home). Then I also have my Grandma Haughers 1962 Electrolux L (the early one with the black flipper switch) and the originalk attatchments.....PAT COFFEY

granny vacs...

i have both of my grandmothers Kirbys. The gran on moms side had a DS-80, that i sent in for a factory rebuild, and the gran on my dads side had a Heritage I. I have them both.

I grew up with mom having a Kenmore Satellite canister circa 1955 and she used it for decades when it was replaced by an 80's Kenmore twin fan. The Satellite sat in her basement all these years, I'd see it on every visit home, until when I finally moved back here 30+ years later it was gone grrrrr. She gave it to someone...
That and my Kmart/Brother portable electric typewriter I got in highschool, gone!!! Oooh I wasn't happy about that. She doesn't remember getting rid of it. T'was there 3 years ago when I last came for a visit too.
How could my mom do that to me. .She knows I collect stuff and was never to throw anything of mine out, I think she's going dotty LOL

Freedom 750w Green and Cream?

You mean this one?

We are not totally sure its original as it should according to the brochure have a chrome grille and green cord wind but the previous owners had it from near new and didnt have it repaired.

Maybe its a special for a leccy shop???

The only genuine Family vacuum I have is this festively conglomerated 1967 Electrolux 89. It began life as a complete all green 89 with electric hose and PN. The telescopic wand and main body is all that remains original.

I received it only this Christmas past as it was thought by Mom to be decades long gone. Brother Jim piped up at brunch to say he had it stored away in his basement. When Dad bought Mom her new vacuum (after I left home) he absconded it to the Garage Workshop. Over the years it clearly encountered mis-adventures and he, frugal man, replaced parts as they failed with whatever he could scrounge. I'm particularly impressed that he leak-proofed the beige hose in matching red plastic bags. The 'Banana Puce' PN200 from 1976-8 is another choice touch. Other than its bangs & bumps and 'Johnny Cash Cadillac One Piece At A Time' appearance it is clean and rust free inside and runs smooth, strong and quiet to this day.

I have accumulated enough green parts, with the help of Pete and Doug Smith to re-build it all in green but as I have a third 89 that needs help most of those parts will be used in its resurrection.

In Loving Memory of this 89's long Family Service I will eventually be 'restoring' it in Red and Green with a red cord and a latexed red saran weave hose from a red 86/88.

Although the whereabouts of other relative's vacuums are unknown I have managed to find examples of Gramma Scheafe's (and Mom's) Filter Queen, Gramma Kerr's Hoover 281, Aunt Carol's Constellation, Aunt Jessie's Lewyt Big Wheel, Aunt Bernadette's Compact and Great Aunt Sophie's green GE Swiveltop.

Vacuum Brand loyalty may not run strong in my Family but everyone of them drove General Motors almost exclusively - Cadillac, Pontiac, Chevy, Buicks or Oldsmobiles through the 1940s to 80s. Oh, those German/Scots roots...

I don't have my mother's original Kirby, because it was killed in a house fire. But I do still have the Omega that Kirby replaced it with under their Lifetime agreement to rebuild. It was not rebuildable, so it was replaced for $12.50.

Green & cream 750 Freedom

Hello,

It looks as if your cleaner has been made up from the basic freedom 750 which was cream & orange whereas the olive green model had a matching green foot switch by one of the rear wheels which were fitted with matching soft pvc tyres. A caster was fitted underneath the the bag end. An opack thick pvc holdall with a wide handle/loop (with a large circular transfer hoover emblem in red on one side) for holding the tools.......I missed picking up a mint machine in its carton days before it was sold about five years ago !!!!!!!

Regards, Walter.

Well bugger me.

After double double checking seems I got confused.

It is indeed a 4002 Honey Beige/ Tangerine Freedom with 4006 Green housing.

When we bought it the owners said it has never had a repair since they got married - they were easily late 50's/early 60s.
It was a second hand wedding present so it must of been a reconditioned one.

I still love it despite its hash of machines and at least mine is unique.

The orange really compliments the green in its own clashy way.

Wow in Shropshire eh and all these machines so close!
Another shropshire member that you know of with all these minters you often refer to?

Not so far from you.

The freedom actually came from Market Drayton.
Nice little place to go for a saturday morning drive on the hunt for vacs.

Hoover 1354A, and Electrolux Z65.

Hi guys and gals.

I still have the 1354A which I grew up with, albeit extremely battered and yellowed with age, the handle does not stay up and the bearings in the motor are well past their sell by date, but I cannot bear to bring myself to part with the old girl.
I wish I had our old Lux 65 cylinder. I remeber being towed around on that as a toddler.

I have inherited one machine of worth, and that is the U2336 turbopower which belonged to my great aunt. Yes this one is missing chucks from the bag door, as it has the same extremely fragile plastics of the whole U2336 production run. Must have been something they used to colour the plastic, as the U2332 tends to be much more durable!

Oh yes, nearly forgot. My U4014. This is the cleaner our next door neightbour used until she died in 1991. It then sat in my grandfathers garden shed for 15 years (He passed away in 2005, and took year for us to pluck up the courage to clear out his shed), and the U4014 came to light. I quickly resuced the old lady, and after 24 hours in a warm dry room, I fired her up firstly on a 12v car battery charger, and ran the motor for an hour to clear the commutator, then I fired her up on full mains power. She then ran for about 30 seconds before the radio surpressor died spectacularly in a shower of sparks and a very loud bang, although the motor still ran.

I changed this capacitor and now after a couple of hours in the spa she looks pretty darned fine. Runs sweetly and is preserved now for posterity.

Thats my story.

Happy hoovering vacuumland!

Clark.

Toy Hoover 612

Hi Walter (Newport),

Your toy 612 sounds very familiar. The cream colour sounds right, no furniture guard, black PVC bag and perhaps a black platic button in the end of the handle's metal tubing. The box was even printed in the same colour ink (red) and graphic as the real 612 accessories box. Could we have a picture of the machine and its carton?

Cheers, Nick

Bringing up an old but fun thread.

My Mum had a Hoover Turbopower U2332 that she bought when she moved into our house in 1986. By '92 it was dead - she was extremely rough on her vacuums - and it was replaced with a Panasonic MC-E44. A year later, this was "replaced" by a Kirby Legend 2 following a door to door sales pitch, but Mum never liked it and would avoid using it, although she did get into a strange habit of shampooing the living room carpet every 2 weeks - that didn't last long. The Panasonic went upstairs as the spare vac, but she used it far more than she ever used the Kirby.

After my parents split up, Mum got rid of the Kirby after a few years as it was relegated to the shed by then and gathering dust. The Panasonic soldiered on until 2007 when Mum wanted to "upgrade" and I was given it and it's remained with me ever since.

My mom's vacuum......

I actually grew up with Kirbys because my family passed down with Kirby machines, my moms first vac was a Bissell, She HATED it! She ended up getting her first Kirby, and it was a Gsix. 6 years later, A salesman knocks on our door with a Ultimate G Diamond Edition. She then bought it and put the poor Gsix in the basement. In late 2012, we had to move, so we moved to a store with a house connected to it. Her Kirby was completely worn out, like the fan was broke, bag, etc. Then, she just took the Gsix, and left it out for over 3 months! DURING WINTER. I took it inside and I have been cleaning it up ever since.

The End.

Would love to have three or four more, but happy to have these three Seniors.
Going to have two more soon.

Doctor, I'm in love with my Hoovers.
Is it serious ? ? ?
Is there a drug for ?

My family is VERY rough on vacuums.
For example my cousns in Rochdale has a Vax 121, and a Hoover triple wortex in white and had a cable rewind. Both were alright. Vax 121 has in TERRIBLEcondition but still sucked alright so it was still being used till they were gonna gt a new one later they had got the house done up. The hoover was in an OK condition, but despite being cleaned out, the suction was HORRIBLE and the brush never span recently (when I last seen it in about 2007) Then they got those horrible va bagless power range cylinders which Argos sell a lot, they said it was not a good machine! So I gave my Auntie the DC14 Blitz it (Dyson) and two years later... it still works! They said it works so well and picks up LOADS
