Im not really surprised that the suction only vacuum pulled out that much dirt - for a start the Bissell Sweep and Shark (Gtech in the UK) machines are cordless sweepers, so much of the time they'll only remove the top dirt you can see and the rest of the time move the rest of whatever dirt that comes out of the top pile, around.
I do agree that straight suction/suction only can pull out a lot more fine dirt but you also have to bear in mind that depending on whatever type of carpet you have, constant brush roll can damage the carpet you're cleaning.
Last week I ended up washing a carpet with my Bissell upright, after a day when the carpet dried I realised that what my Hoover Slalom bagless upright was picking up were the loose tufts of carpet rather than actual dust.
