A lot of these cheap modern vacuums have truly sad performance i just saw a very good example of that yesterday and it just makes me think how much dirt are these vacuums leaving behind?


I sold my Rainbow D4 to an older couple yesterday. I believe their last vacuum was a Eureka maxima, as i saw one sitting out on their porch as i was bringing the rainbow in. I suggested that they give the rainbow a try to ensure everything was working. The man cleaned an area of about 20" by 20" and the water was just completely brown with a floating clump of dog hair on top. I told them they will want to change their water very often the first few times they use it.


A few years back i was cleaning out a friend's apt before she moved.Her vacuum was a bagless Bissell Powerforce. I was using a shop vac attached to a homemade separator with a 16" hose and an electrolux PN-6 I had a basketball sized clump of hair and other dirt in the separator's bin (5 gallon bucket) along with about a cup or two, if i remember right, of sand. There was more than likely more in the bag of the shop vac that passed through the separator, but i hate to think what i could have brought out of that carpet with a better powerhead.


On a side note i found a Panasonic upright with the triforce motor for about $4

How did you get a shop vac to run a power nozzle? I agree it's gross what modern machines leave behind...

One of the place I work at uses these for vacuum cleaners.

What vacuum is this vacuumfreeeke? It sure has LOTS of power!

At home I use my red TriStar CXL 2-speed either with straight suction rug tool or 2-1000 PN equipped with VibraGroomer II brush/beater bar roller

When cleaning houses/apartments I use the "Silver Bullet" TriStar CXL with Eureka VibraGroomer III PN or model 2-51 cogged belt PN equipped with bristles only brush roller

It's a sharp canister.... I will try to put a link to my video of it on here but sometimes that doesn't work because I'm using my phone.... if it doesn't I'll do it from the computer later tonight...

On a similar note - the house I'm in now, the previous owners had been using a poorly-maintained Dirt Devil canister. The first few times I vacuumed here (with a Filter Queen) I nearly filled the bin with sand and pet fuzz of some kind. I have cats, but I know they didn't shed *that* much.

Then when I got my Simplicity 6970, I managed to fill the bag on that in three trips through the house. (That was a good clue that the FQ needs a better power nozzle, too - I ordered a Wessel Werk EBK360 to go with it.)

I ran the power nozzle by creating an external pigtail for the hose it was actually an old kirby cord which i attached to short cord that had a standard 2 prong male connection and a female pin connection (like a power nozzle port) on the other side i attached to the hose using a series of rubber bands. I was using the shop vac as a sort of self built central vac at my old apartment.

That's almost horrifying that you picked up that much filth with a straight suction machine and you know some made it past that separator so there's probably a little more material in that bag.

Amazing isn't it? It's said that carpeting can hold up to 8x it's own weight in dirt.

So you plugged the power nozzle into the a regular wall outlet then?

Horrifying indeed. I'm sure there is stuff in the bag (been too scared to look) because when I started, the bag check indicator was green and now it's orange! I have to change the bag now. Note that I've been using the same bag in the machine in my apartment for the several months I've had the machine and the bag check indicator hasn't risen one bit.... one time on that nasty carpet (less than 100 square feet) and and the bag is full, not to mention what I got in the cup that you see pictured here. Can you even imagine what would have happened if I'd brought a Hoover WindTunnel, Simplicity 7 Series, Kirby, Miele S7, or Rainbow E series? I shudder to think! I don't want to get my good machines all nasty though... as it is, I'm going to have to drench this one with Lysol before I bring it back in the apartment... It's still in the car trunk fermenting LOL...

By the way, are you going to show us the Panasonic? Awesome find and great price! The new/current Panasonics are kind of disappointing, but I like their older stuff.

Work

I also took my Olympia One to work and vacuumed about 6 cubicles. The cubicle walls are fabric and there was dust on them an inch thick. The cleaning crew uses straight suction only backpack vacuums and they are always locked up. I filled a brand new C bag. Needless to say, I am keeping the Olympia at work locked up! No wonder all of us sneeze and hack!

EricAustin, do U use the 4-ply C bags or HEPA C bags in your Lux? U can fill up a Lux HEPA bag & still have plenty of airflow/suction left; & not an ounce of dust escapes a HEPA bag

The kirby cord was plugged into the wall the on/off/reset switch on the nozzle itself was pretty nice with this set up.

Here's that panasonic i'm pretty impressed with it it pulls about the same on the baird meter as my simplicity 7 series does.

Bag use

I used the 4 ply paper C bags as that's what I had available at the time. I found a huge unopened package at a thrift store for $0.99.

We've had no janitors at work for several months, and just about everyone here sneezes and coughs and sniffles. A bit ago I brought in a Royal 880 that I got off eBay, and then its motor croaked.

So, after a bit of hackery, replacing the motor with a Royal 671 motor, replacing the brush, modifying the outer bag to take Kirby HEPA bags and getting a set of attachments, I gave the office the Royal treatment. Amazingly, I managed to half-fill a Kirby bag with fine, sticky dark gray grit, and the carpets are visibly lighter in color. No wonder everyone was hacking...

Looks like I'm gonna leave the Royal here and spend a few minutes each day doing what nobody else will!

That's why I stick with my Convertible! I filled up a bag cleaning my dad's GF's house, and it filled very quickly. I'd say that it does better than my Kirbys, but I might offend some people here.... I do love my Kirbys, though. A few weeks ago I drug out my Electrolux LE and I cleaned my dad's truck. The turbo nozzle wasn't cutting it so I switched to a Kenmore Powermate Jr. I filled up a new C bag with all kinds of unspeakable nastiness. My dad's truck has never been cleaner. LOL. I also gave the LE a pretty good workout, too.

Dont knock straight suction..

It gets out a different type of dirt, you can go behind any revolving brush with a good straight suction machine and get a ton of fine dust.

Not quite as horrible...

But over my time off i figured i'd shampoo the carpets so i moved all the furniture and then wanting to see what it could do i took my DC-07 to it using slow strokes and this is what it captured. It probably would have gotten more but i did take my Riccar Radiance to the higher traffic area a few hours before.
