Eureka Brush-roll Problem

After letting it sit for more than a year I decided it was time to clean up my Vanguard upright. It runs smooth as silk but the brush-roll rattles around. Am I missing parts? The spring clip won't press against the nub that comes out. All the other Eurekas that I have worked on are the newer plastic base with the hex end brush-roll, so I can compare this to another machine. Can anyone show me what I'm doing wrong?

I made a typo. It should read i can NOT compare this to another machine. I hope I didn't confuse everyone.
Hopefully there is a Eureka expert out there who can let me know how to fix this.

You should just be able to push the free "arm" of the spring holder to lock under the metal button (on both ends). Not quite sure why they are not in place. These two springy arms are what stabilizes the brush roll. If it is too difficult to push them behind the metal buttons using just your fingers, try using a screwdriver to help push them into the locked position.

If this springy arms are not tight enough, try reshaping them so that they give the pressure needed to lock under the metal buttons.

Thanks for the response eurekaprince. It is hard to believe the springs are bent that far as they are both about equal. Maybe someone tried to yank out the brush-roll with the springs in place? I was worried I was missing parts. I took a couple more pictures that show how much space is in there.
The first shows that the square end is even with the top of the notch.

Here is a side view that shows why it rattles. I might try and make a shim to take up the slack. I don't want to break the spring!

The spring is not on correctly....The round circle part should fit snug against the square end of the brush roll. I just looked at mine....

I actually wonder if those are not the original spring devices. I remember that my Eureka Rugulator 2083 from 1974 had green coloured brush roll securers - maybe even covered in a green plastic sheath, if I remember correctly. Maybe somewhere along the line some repair shop tried to make some homemade replacement springs? These just don't look right to me. Wonder if any Vacuumlander can pull a pair of better ones from a donor vac for you....it won't cost very much to mail to you. On the other hand, can't fathom how one would remove these from the anchoring buttons on each end of the brush roll cavity...:-(

The fix

Thanks to everyone for the help. I decided not to bend the springs. Instead I cut some pieces of an old belt and used them as shims. Now it works fine with no rattling.

Here's a pic. Running like brand new! I do have the original bag but it's not in the best shape so I wanted to keep it just for display, the red, green, brown, and orange almost match.
