Electrolux Olympia One Information Please!

The Olympia was made from 1978-81; early version has Super J style handle; late version has Silverado style handle. 1980 version also has Lake Placid Olympic Games sticker. PN4 is painted brown to match canister unit; combo tools, PN wand sheath & crevice tool beige color. Hose beige with brown "tracers" along hose. B8 shampooer/polisher, Special model 1452, Automatic Heavy-Duty upright & Turbotool Rug Washer model #10360 in matching brown.

Is in my opinion, one of the best performing vacuums Electrolux made, the Super J which was the model before it had lots of problems with the motor, the Olympia had none of these problems and was a truly fine product, the only thing I can say bad about it was that the hoses did not hold up well, but that is an easy fix with a new vinyl replacement hose..

Well, the Electrolux Olympia One was made from 1978-1982, i believe. It is considered by many collectors as one of the best machines ever produced by Electrolux as these year were considered their heyday, when machines were made to last. As you can tell, 30 plus yrs later, many Oly's are still going strong as ever.
The few draw backs of these era machines was the original woven hose. They are/were prone to develop leaks, and are not very long, and are not very flexible.
This hose should be replaced with a newer vinal hose which is much mre user friendly. They are avalible on E-Bay.
Another drawback is the not very agressive Power Nozzle,(by todays standards) but its all in the eye of the beyholder. The Olympia PNs are excellent on shorter carpet naps, or any carpet that is not thick, heavy shag.
Do you understand about the Automatic Control? If not, this feature keeps the bag from overfilling and the motor from overheating. Once the bag is full, (to the point of where you have set the dial) the machine will stop, and the front end bag door will pop open. This keeps the machine from loosing too much suction and also keeps the motor from over heating.
Many Lux Owners keep the Automatic Control set at 3 (3 lines showing on the dial), this will make the machine open when the bag is approx half full.
Some owners like to fill the bag completly, until its totally full. In this case, have all 6 lines showing on the dial.
Some owners use a new bag each time they use the machine, reguardless of how full the old one is.

I think they were still making the Olympia into 1982,,with the Silverado comming out in late 1982. I think. Could be wrong. Been many yrs ago!
You can tell the reason so many of these 1970s machines are still going strong to this day is that they were made to last. Many will still be going strong another 30 plus yrs from now.

All good information above.Also,the early models had the Super J style handle and small rear wheels.The change to newer handle included larger rear wheels.The Silverado was introduced in April 82 which allowed the Olympia to be closed out at a reduced price for a huge sales month.The very last Olympias will have an all plastic bag door including the side that faces the bag.

After vacuuming the toilet dry as a toddler our Olympia One had its motor replaced , the new one seems louder than our other two Olympias, is it just noisier or is it really more powerful? It needs a PVC adapter to reach the bag holder? Thanks!
PS :two of our Olympias (including the toilet one) were made in 1978 and the third one is from 1980.

When you got your motor replaced was it with original motor or replacement from someone other than Electrolux? The PVC tube is a give away it might not be an original.Some of the non original motors are as powerful and are loud.

Motor plays dead.
The motor pictured above was removed from the Olympia after it failed without warning during vacuuming, flipping the switch had no effect, and neither did replugging it and getting an empty bag. The motor was installed in 1998 and failed in 2013. HOWEVER, after I removed the motor from the vacuum I hooked it up directly to the cord winder and it sprang to life , although the amount of sparks off the brushes was worry some. Upon closer inspection the commutator had fine groves and pits in it. By that point I had already ordered another motor. Long story short, When I installed the replacement of a replacement motor and turned it on, the power strip the cord was plugged into tripped. Right now, it is in an electrolux repair shop. What do you guys think happened? What did I do wrong? I appreciate all responses!
