Hello all, new member here.

My fiancé has an Electrolux Model G that has been in her family forever. Yesterday it "died." I wasn't around to hear or see it, but according to her she plugged it in, turned it on, the motor started spinning up and then died. Now nothing happens at all when you turn the switch on.

Does this indicate to anyone what the problem may be, or do I need to collect more information to get a proper diagnosis?

So far I have tried the following:
1) disassembled the plug assembly and cleaned up the wiring in there (looks like someone had done some DIY stuff in there before, and some of the wiring was pretty crimped up. Getting this all cleaned up and wired well didn't yield any results.

2) Opened up the back to access the motor compartment. It's very dusty in there, so I cleaned it out as much as I could. I didn't see any issues with the wiring in there or with the wiring attachments to the switch.

3) The motor's rotor spins fine when turned by hand, and the brushes seem to be in contact still, but I don't have a whole lot of expertise with motors so at this point I'm not sure what I'm looking for now.

This vacuum is is very sentimental so I'd love to fix it if possible, even it if means finding a new motor for it. However, I'm not even sure if replacing the motor will fix this, so I'm hoping someone with some more experience could lend some advice on next steps.

Thanks!

It's good that you are repairing it and not tossing it for some plastic fantastic Wal-Mart vacuum. It's a great vacuum that will last you for many years. I have some G parts I will sell you if you need them, such as the switch and motor. Have you inspected the cord? Sometimes the cord will become brittle and the wires wear out from stress. Try a different cord by plugging it into the switch. If that still does not fix the problem, it might be your motor. I can send you a healthy replacement motor for $70 if you need one. Motors for these are rather expensive and I'm practically giving this one away. If you need parts, email me at [email protected]

Look at how the contacts are oriented between the recoil winder and the machine. Sometimes those prongs break or are out of alignment. Usually if a motor quits like that it can have quit a spark show. Hopefully in your case it's just a connection issue.

Lots of info in here from members trying to refurbish these old motors....recent threads too. It maybe be easier to buy another motor from Adin....he offered. I don't know that he's actually "giving it away" @$70. The motor had a long run G/1205/50th Anniversary model etc.

We should have a sticky on motor rebuilds....these questions are asked ALL the time.

That may be, but buying stuff @Aerus is like retail plus 50%. I've seen the motors on eBay for about $59 ea on average, guaranteed to work.

Aerus has a floor brush I want for $50....doesn't mean I'm going to pay that.
