Electrolux LX

VacuumLand – Vintage & Modern Vacuum Enthusiasts

Help Support VacuumLand:

Hi Hoover Celebrity:

The story of the cut-away is easy to recall. It was my idea.

This was an old model LXI that I had in the basement. The motor had been removed long before, but all componants, trim and so on were intact. Basically it was a shell. So I grabbed the metal cutters and went to work.

If memory serves, it goes back to the fall of 1983. I was living in Lombard, Illinois with a friend named Doug, who worked for Belden wire company. (Yes the Belden that made the cords for Electrolux.) Obviously, I hadn't moved to Naperville yet. At any rate, I thought it would be interesting to show the process of ejection befor, during and after. I used a small screw in the right place to hold the ejector for 'mid' eject.

This little project has served me well, and helped me show the process in pictures. Till now, nobody knew there was no motor.

And finally, yes, I still have it, and used it last Spring for a series of pictures showing repair to the ejection system.

Thanks for asking.
Alex Taber.

Hi Charles Richard.

I'm always sitting down to watch these!

You never fail to touch that special place in my heart, and return me to that happy little boy who saw this wonderful sight in 1952.

Thanks for sharing, again!

Alex:

I think it will be fun to try the repair for the hose. Once I get some of the latex and practice on an old hose first.

Sounds like you live in a nice area away from lots of city traffic, my kind of living.

I'll keep you posted on the hose repair.

Electrolux137--Really nice bag ejection demos!!Bet this was cool during the sales demos!!!Sadly the ejectors in my two LX's are corroded beyond recognition.the climate here is VERY humid-and these two machines must have come from non-airconditioned places. My vacuums work,though-just no neat bag ejecting.the ejector in the vacuum is almost like a minature ejector in front load or RL trash trucks-when the tailgate is raised the trash is pushed out by the ejector. In FL trucks the ejector also does the compacting and packing.IN RL trucks maintains pressure on the trash so the packer blade in the tailgate packs each hopper load.Too bad the trucks can't spring their loads out! and too bad that no vacuum builder today uses that cool system.Guess liabilities come into play-someone gets hits by a flying vacuum bag and feins injuries! Its good intertainment, though!Looks like you had fun trying it out!!!Now you can look FORWARD to when your vacuum gets full. The Lux bag ejector system was one REALLY CLEVER peice of engineering!

"After-Filter"

I've been using a dryer sheet for the after-filter. Not sure how much it really filters, but it doesn't seem to affect the suction any and gives a nice smell to the room, too. It's also a lot cheaper than the ones sold on eBay.

piscesinphoenix--using dryer sheets is a great idea! I'll give it a try and see how it works. In my other vacuums I usually pour in some vanilla scented product that looks something like potpourri to keep them smelling nice, but the LX kind of threw me when I saw it had a filter on the rear exhaust.

Hi Alex

Vanilla on a cotton ball would probably last a little longer too.

About the latex for the hose repair, a friend of mine in the stage business at work had a pint of the liquid latex he said I could have. He said the latex has a limited shelf life and this bottle was nearing that time and so he gave it to me. I think it will be just enough to coat the inside of the hose for my LX. I'm going to try it this weekend and see if I can get the process down. Even if it isn't enough to do the whole hose, it has to improve the suction since the hose currently has zero suction.

Hi Greg.

Great:

Tomorrow looks like a great day to work in the room. Please note, this is not a 'storage unit,' like I had my stuff in from 2006-2013. Last October, I loaded everything into 2 U-Haul pods, and brought them here. Now my stuff is in a holding building a mile away.

Like most members of the V.C.C.C./VacuumLand, my housemate isn't into vacuum cleaners, and simply 'tollerates' my interest. Turning a spare room into a display room? never!! So the 'room' is my special place. The plan was to build a display building for the vacuums. That plan will be realized next spring, but I'll go through the hoses tomorrow.

Keep me posted to how the hose repair goes. If you master the art of hose restoration, I'll hire you to do several for me. But we'll finalize that next year, let's see how this hose your doing turns out.

Hi Greg.

Do not remove that long screw from the 'brain' of the Electrolux LX, it may mess up the ejector. Then again it may not do any damage at all, but don't risk it.

To remove the bag ctlender, simply pull, it slides off the 2 metal tabs. The 2 tabs simply pull out and the swivle caster assembly snapps into place.

Tomorrow I'll see which box the wheels are in.

Hi Greg.

I haven't been posting much as I've been suffering through a very intense migraine headache, the type that won't go away. Finally over it, and thinking of you.

What's the status of the wheels for the model LX? get them yet? I was way too sick to go to the holding room, but the hoses are all in ling boxes and easy to find.

Keep me posted on the hose operation, and if the wheels are what you need. I promise I'll check the parts room as soon as I feel better.
Alex Taber.

Hi Alex

I'm sorry to hear you've been under the weather. Hopefully it will pass soon.

The wheels arrived safe and sound. I've had a little trouble removing the bag holder to put the swivel wheel in, but then I did not want to force something and break it. I'm planning to try the hose repair this weekend. I had a few other projects to get done last weekend. I may just leave the wheels on the back and opt to keep the bag holder. I haven't made up my mind on that yet, plus I'm not sure I want to chance removing that one screw that needs to come out and then reinstalling it in order to anchor the swivel wheel. I don't want to chance damaging the ejector mechanism since it works so well. Decisions, decisions.

Hi Greg.

I'm used to migrains, I get them quite frequently, but they usually last a few hours, not two days.

Removal of the long screw to attach the swivle caster will not effect the ejection system one bit, it simply secures the outer mechinism to the belly of the machine.
As to the rear wheels, those are the only ones I use, as I like to use the bag compartment. (Keeping it as close to what I saw as possible as what I saw as a child.)

Please take pictures when you can, and let me know how the hose repair goes. If it turns out fine, I'll hire you to do a few Electrolux hoses of mine next year.

More later my friend.
Alex Taber.

Alex

Hope you feel better soon.

Thank you for letting me know that the one screw will not affect the ejection mechanism. I think I'd like to keep the bag holder, but I may try it both ways to see which one I like best.

I'll be sure to post some pictures soon and I'll keep you posted on the hose repair. Sounds like the weather is going to be cold and windy with some rain here so it will be good to stay in and work on the hose.

Greg
